Adaptivní simulace rozsáhlého povrchu oceánu / Adaptive Simulation of Large-Scale Ocean Surface

Krijt, Filip January 2014 (has links)
Physically-driven methods of simulating fluid dynamics and frequency-based ocean surface synthesis methods are of long-standing interest for the field of computer graphics. However, they have been historically used separately or without any interaction between them. This thesis focuses on the possibility of combining the approaches into one adaptive solution by proposing methods for unified surface representation, method result blending and one-way interaction between the methods. The thesis also outlines several future developments of the combined method and proposes a level-of-detail approach taking advantage of hardware tessellation that can be used regardless of what method was used for the simulation. Biswas, Kalyan, Urgel, José I., Xu, Kun, Ma, Ji, Sánchez-Grande, Ana, Mutombo, Pingo, Gallardo-Caparrós, Aurelio, Lauwaet, Koen, Mallada, Benjamin, de la Torre, Bruno, Matěj, Adam, Gallego, José M., Miranda, Rodolfo, Jelínek, Pavel, Feng, Xinliang, Écija, David 22 June 2022 (has links)
The atomically precise control over the size, shape and structure of nanographenes (NGs) or the introduction of heteroatom dopants into their sp2-carbon lattice confer them valuable electronic, optical and magnetic properties. Herein, we report on the design and synthesis of a hexabenzocoronene derivative embedded with graphitic nitrogen in its honeycomb lattice, achieved via on-surface assisted cyclodehydrogenation on the Au(111) surface. Combined scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and non-contact atomic force microscopy investigations unveil the chemical and electronic structures of the obtained dicationic NG. Kelvin probe force microscopy measurements reveal a considerable variation of the local contact potential difference toward lower values with respect to the gold surface, indicative of its positive net charge. Altogether, we introduce the concept of cationic nitrogen doping of NGs on surfaces, opening new avenues for the design of novel carbon nanostructures.

Growth of organic nanostructures through on-surface reactions : from phthalocyanines self-assembly to polymeric phthalocyanines / Croissance par réaction de surface de nanostructures organiques : de l'auto-assemblage de phtalocyanines aux réseaux polymérisés

Nardi, Elena 10 November 2015 (has links)
Surface-assisted covalent coupling of suitably designed molecular precursors on metal surfaces has recently emerged as a new route towards the design of novel molecular architectures promising for future applications. Phthalocyanines and their derivatives have been widely studied for their chemical and optoelectronic properties. In this thesis the synthesis of phthalocyanine compounds is presented. The compounds are obtained through an on-surface reaction between tetracarbonitrile-functionalized precursors and metals. The experimental investigation is carried out by means of scanning tunnelling microscopy and X-Ray photoemission spectroscopy. Two molecular precursors, TCN-DBTTF and PPCN, are studied. TCN-DBTTF molecules are deposited with metal atoms (Mn, Fe, or Cu) on Ag(111) and Au(111). Annealing is used to activate the reaction of cyclotetramerization between precursors and metals. In the most favourable case (TCN-DBTTF with Fe on Ag(111)) the reaction can be activated at 200°C and leads to the synthesis of individual phthalocyanines. Increasing the temperature allows the synthesis of polymeric lines, at 250°C, and small 2D domains, at 275°C. Similar results are obtained for PPCN deposition with Mn or Cu on Au(111). In this latter case, the evolution of core level spectra allows a chemical proof of the on-surface reaction. The factors affecting on-surface cyclotetramerization have also been studied. This study demonstrates the versatility of the method: on-surface cyclotetramerization allows creating original 2D polymers connected by phthalocyanine macrocycles, and may work with a wide range of tetracarbonitrile-functionalized precursors and metallic atoms.

Graphene Nanoribbons Derived from Zigzag Edge-Encased Poly(para-2,9-dibenzo[bc,kl]coronenylene) Polymer Chains

Beyer, Doreen, Wang, Shiyong, Pignedoli, Carlo A., Melidonie, Jason, Yuan, Bingkai, Li, Can, Wilhelm, Jan, Ruffieux, Pascal, Berger, Reinhard, Müllen, Klaus, Fasel, Roman, Feng, Xinliang 03 June 2020 (has links)
In this work, we demonstrate the bottom-up on-surface synthesis of poly(para-dibenzo[bc,kl]-coronenylene) (PPDBC), a zigzag edge-encased analog of poly(para-phenylene) (PPP), and its lateral fusion into zigzag edge-extended graphene nanoribbons (zeeGNRs). Toward this end, we designed a dihalogenated di(meta-xylyl)anthracene monomer displaying strategic methyl groups at the substituted phenyl ring and investigated its applicability as precursor in the thermally induced surface-assisted polymerization and cyclodehydrogenation. The structure of the resulting zigzag edge-rich (70%) polymer PPDBC was unambiguously confirmed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and non-contact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM). Remarkably, by further thermal treatment at 450 °C two and three aligned PPDBC chains can be laterally fused into expanded zeeGNRs, with a ribbon width of nine (N = 9) up to 17 (N = 17) carbon atoms. Moreover, the resulting zeeGNRs exhibit a high ratio of zigzag (67%) vs armchair (25%) edge segments and feature electronic band gaps as low as 0.9 eV according to gaps quasiparticle calculations.

On-surface synthesis of super-heptazethrene

Mishra, Shantanu, Melidonie, Jason, Eimre, Kristjan, Obermann, Sebastian, Gröning, Oliver, Pignedoli, Carlo A., Ruffieux, Pascal, Feng, Xinliang 03 January 2022 (has links)
Zethrenes are model diradicaloids with potential applications in spintronics and optoelectronics. Despite a rich chemistry in solution, on-surface synthesis of zethrenes has never been demonstrated. We report the on-surface synthesis of super-heptazethrene on Au(111). Scanning tunneling spectroscopy investigations reveal that super-heptazethrene exhibits an exceedingly low HOMO–LUMO gap of 230 meV and, in contrast to its open-shell singlet ground state in the solution phase and in the solid-state, likely adopts a closed-shell ground state on Au(111).

Wang, Zhiyong, Zhang, Zhen, Qi, Haoyuan, Ortega-Guerrero, Andres, Wang, Lihuan, Xu, Kun, Wang, Mingchao, Park, SangWook, Hennersdorf, Felix, Dianat, Arezoo, Croy, Alexander, Hartmut, Cuniberti, Gianaurelio, Weigand, Jan J., Kaiser, Ute, Dong, Renhao, Feng, Xinliang 23 January 2023 (has links)
Two-dimensional polymers (2DPs) and their layer-stacked 2D covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) are classes of structurally defined crystalline polymeric materials with exotic physical and chemical properties. Yet, synthesizing 2DP and 2D COF single crystals via irreversible reactions remains challenging. Here we report the synthesis of charged 2DP (C2DP) single crystals through an irreversible Katritzky reaction, under pH control, on a water surface. The periodically ordered 2DPs comprise aromatic pyridinium cations and counter BF4− anions. The C2DP crystals, which are composed of linked porphyrin and pyrylium monomers (C2DP-Por), have a tunable thickness of 2–30 nm and a lateral domain size up to 120 μm2. Single crystals with a square lattice (a = b = 30.5 Å) are resolved by imaging and diffraction methods with near-atomic precision. Furthermore, the integration of C2DP-Por crystals in an osmotic power generator device shows an excellent chloride ion selectivity with a coefficient value reaching ~0.9 and an output power density of 4 W m−2, superior to those of graphene and boron nitride.

On-surface fabrication of functional molecular nanomaterials

Skidin, Dmitry 05 December 2019 (has links)
Polycyclic organic molecules and their derivatives present the class of nanostructures that are currently in the focus of scientific research due to their perspectives for the versatile applications in molecular and organic electronics. To exploit their unique properties to full extent, one has to understand the behavior of molecular systems at the nanoscale and to develop a set of fabrication methods. In this work, molecular nanostructures are fabricated using the bottom-up on-surface synthesis approach, which allows precision of the desired products and control over their properties through careful precursors design. To study the reaction flow and the properties of the formed structures, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at low temperature and in ultra-high vacuum is the tool of choice. In this work, three molecular systems are studied in detail, with the focus of fabricating atomically precise nanostructures with tailored properties. A cyclodehydrogenation reaction is successfully applied to synthesize an asymmetric starphene molecule in the first part of the work. It is then shown that this molecule can function as a unimolecular NAND logic gate with its response to the attached single Au atoms measured as the position of the electronic resonance. A combination of the atomic and molecular lateral manipulation with the STM tip and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) is used to demonstrate this behavior. The effect of the controllable shifting of the molecular resonances is due to the asymmetric shape of the starphene molecule and was initially predicted theoretically. More complex structures, molecular wires, are presented in the second part of the work by using the surface-assisted Ullmann coupling reaction. The monomer unit, consisting of the alternant donor and acceptor parts, was specifically designed to achieve highly-conductive flexible molecular wires. The conductance is measured by pulling the single wires with the STM tip off the surface. Theoretical calculations of the complex band structure of the wires confirm the obtained results and support the discussion of the importance of the balance between the strength of acceptor and donor units for the conductance of the resultant wires. Based on this, some model structures are proposed. Finally, the last part deals with a unimolecular reaction to create an anomalous combination of pentagon and heptagon rings in a single organic molecule. Such 5-7 moieties are analogous to the Stone-Wales defects in graphene and may significantly alter the electronic properties. The precise intramolecular structure of the reaction products is unambiguously assigned by high-resolution STM imaging with functionalized tips and further confirmed by DFT calculations.

On-surface synthesis of porous graphene nanoribbons containing nonplanar [14]annulene pores

Ajayakumar, M. R., Di Giovannantonio, Marco, Pignedoli, Carlo A., Yang, Lin, Ruffieux, Pascal, Ma, Ji, Fasel, Roman, Feng, Xinliang 22 January 2024 (has links)
The precise introduction of nonplanar pores in the backbone of graphene nanoribbon represents a great challenge. Here, we explore a synthetic strategy toward the preparation of nonplanar porous graphene nanoribbon from a predesigned dibromohexabenzotetracene monomer bearing four cove-edges. Successive thermal annealing steps of the monomers indicate that the dehalogenative aryl-aryl homocoupling yields a twisted polymer precursor on a gold surface and the subsequent cyclodehydrogenation leads to a defective porous graphene nanoribbon containing nonplanar [14]annulene pores and five-membered rings as characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy and noncontact atomic force microscopy. Although the C–C bonds producing [14] annulene pores are not achieved with high yield, our results provide new synthetic perspectives for the on-surface growth of nonplanar porous graphene nanoribbons.
