The establishment of online discussion forums and their application to higher education have encouraged the use of online discussion within tertiary teaching. Recent studies related to online discussions have provided different ways of understanding the effect of online discussions on teaching and learning. This study investigates how personal learning is facilitated through various ways of engagement in an online discussion environment. The rationale behind this effort has been the concern that online discussions may be being used only because of the availability and technological opportunities the method provides. Personal learning is generally viewed in the literature as an individual's cognitive and knowledge construction and endeavour to make meaning through involvement and interaction in a community and context. There are, however, great variations in the way individuals engaged in their own learning within a community of learners. Motivation and strategies are also seen as factors that influence to individual level of engagement in online discussions. The findings reveal different types of interactions and highlight different levels of individual participation and engagement in the online discussions. From the findings, the Types of Online Interaction Model is developed to show the different roles that individual might adopt in the online discussion environment. The adopted roles are the individual approaches and actions that contribute to personal learning during the online discussion. The roles are flexible and individuals are likely to move from one role to another when there are reasons to do so. This study also shows the importance of the interactions that enable learning within the community. Two case studies discussed in this thesis illustrate the individual strategies of a provocateur and an eventual participant, which show how different ways of engaging in an online discussion community of learners contribute to individual learning.

To complete my final creative project in seeking a Master of Arts degree in Telecommunication: Digital Storytelling through Ball State University, I have created a "pilot" online journal in Macrojnedia Flash 8 for the display of various methods of creative storytelling through the digital medium (currently located at http://rlhartleysmi.iweb.bsu.edu/cella.swf). Here, 1 review the concepts employed as well as my intentions in creating such a journal. I detail the interior workings of the journal and the categories of digital work represented. I outline requirements for future submissions and financial needs for initial creations and upkeep should the journal develop into a public enterprise. In this overview, I explain the rationale in exploring the creative arts through digital mediums and the importance of such concepts as collaboration and visual aesthetics when communicating through digital mediums.In preparation of this project, I performed an intense study of similar online journals in existence, their designs and usability as well as their subject matter. I also made use of social networking sites through which I created groups for the purpose of gathering and sharing additional research in the realms of digital poetry and publishing creative writing online. Also, I read scholarly research regarding computers as creative outlets, online publishing, and the aspects of interactivity as it comes to exist within the creative story in digital mediums. Brief analyses of several articles regarding interactivity within the experience of the story and within education and culture have been included here. I have concluded that we have naturally moved towards using technology as an artistic medium. My direction and passions have also been reaffirmed in that, through my created digital journal CEIIA, I am assured that the digital medium is the ideal union for the artistic narrative, both literal and visual. / Department of Telecommunications

Denna studies syfte är att undersöka hur personer på ett forum upplever att de lära sig spelen de spelar, ett fokus ligger på hur mycket de lär sig genom spelet och av de som de spelar med. Motivering har även varit i fokus där vi har kunnat se flera olika sätt som datorspel hjälper till vid att motivera lärandet och där en förlust inte alltid behöver vara negativ. Det försöks även göra en skillnad på så kallade vanliga datorspel och datorspel som är framtagna utbildningssyfte. Frågorna på forumet används sedan för att försöka förstå vilka delar av datorspel som lärandet sker i och hur de som svarade på forumet själva uppfattade att lärandet har gått till.
