An Evaluation of the Pollutants Entering Ontarios Wetlands: How Landuse Impacts Wetland Health

To assess the impacts of non-point source pollution on Ontarios wetlands I examined the landuse in the watershed, the water and sediment quality, and the aquatic vegetation in 22 wetlands. I characterized the primary contaminants that enter marshes in Ontario and relate their concentrations to the relative amounts and types of land use in their watershed. I measured levels of nutrients, suspended particulates and trace organics in water and sediment. Species richness and structural diversity of the vegetative community was used as an indicator of wetland health. I included a comparison of two techniques, immunoassays and gas-chromatography (GC) to measure trace organics (PAHs and metolachlor; Chapter 1). Comparison of results from both techniques indicated that immunoassays overestimated analyte concentration by approximately a third. I utilized the immunoassay results, along with selected water quality variables, to characterize contaminants entering these wetlands (Chapter 2). Watersheds containing greater than 95% agriculture contributed the highest suspended particulate, compared with those dominated by urban or forested land. Using multivariate statistics I identified important water and sediment variables that structured these wetlands to be: total phosphorus (TP), ammonia nitrogen (TAN), suspended solids (TSS), specific conductance (COND), sediment phosphorus CTPsed) and inorganic material (lnorgsed) in the sediment. Of these TP, COND and Inorgsed were negatively related to the submergent plant community, while TPsed was positively related. There was no relationship between water quality and the floating or emergent plants but the structural diversity of the plant community was negatively affected by poor water quality. The negative impact of developed land in the watershed on the health of the aquatic plant communities underscores the need to maintain natural areas to trap nutrients and sediments in runoff. / Thesis / Master of Science (MS)

Survey protocol and the influence of land use on bird communities in southern Ontario coastal marshes / Wetland Birds of Southern Ontario

Concern over recent declines in many wetland-dependent bird species has led to a need to monitor marsh bird populations in response to anthropogenic activities. I conducted point counts and vegetation surveys at 26 coastal wetlands in the Laurentian Great Lakes Region of Canada from 2006-2008 to determine 1) effective methods to monitor marsh birds, and 2) the impacts of land use surrounding coastal wetlands on marsh bird communities. The first part of this dissertation showed that call-broadcasts are effective tools for monitoring marsh birds and that point counts for marsh birds should be conducted from both the shoreline and from the interior of large marshes. Because of the species-area relationship for wetland birds in southern Ontario, sampling effort should increase proportionally with wetland area to attempt the detection of all species present. In the second part of this thesis, I showed that marsh obligate-nesters preferred wetlands in rural areas as opposed to urban areas, while generalist marsh-nesting species showed no apparent difference in use. The Index of Marsh Bird Community Integrity (IMBCI), a biological index used to indicate wetland health, was significantly higher in rural than in urban marshes. Marsh isolation was also an important factor in predicting the marsh bird community, with more isolated wetlands containing fewer obligate species and associated with a lower IMBCI value. Wetlands of Georgian Bay were found to have quite different bird and plant communities than wetlands of Lake Ontario. Even though wetlands of Lake Ontario were considerably more degraded than those in Georgian Bay (according to land use alteration and degree of water quality impairment), these two regions produced similar IMBCI scores, and this draws into question the applicability of some indicators on a basin-wide scale. The results of this thesis indicate how survey protocols in existing wetland bird monitoring programs should be modified and support current literature that urbanization negatively affects the marsh bird community. </p> / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Testing and Refining a Unique Approach for Setting Environmental Flow and Water Level Targets for a Southern Ontario Subwatershed

In this study Bradford’s (2008) approach for setting ecological flow and water level targets is tested and refined through application within the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority’s (LSRCA) subwatershed of Lover’s Creek. A method for defining subwatershed objectives and identifying habitat specialists through expert input is proposed and tested. The natural regime of each streamflow and wetland site is characterized along with the hydrological alteration at each site. Potential ecological responses to the hydrologic alterations are then hypothesized for the different types of changes calculated at each site. Methods for setting overall ecosystem health and specific ecological objective flow targets are proposed and tested. These targets are integrated into a flow regime for each site and a process for using this information for decision making is suggested. Flow magnitude quantification is attempted using hydraulic modelling and sediment transport equations, however the data used were found to be inadequate for this application. The accuracy of the targets developed using the method presented in this paper is mainly limited by the accuracy of the hydrological model and quantified flow magnitudes. Recommendations for improving these components of the assessment are made. The unique approach and recommendations presented in this paper provide explicit steps for developing flow targets for subwatersheds within the LSRCA. This research contributes toward the advancement of EFA within the LSRCA, which provides opportunity for enhanced protection and restoration of ecosystem health across the watershed. / Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority
