A gender analysis of the career progression of IT managers

Shapiro, Gillian January 1997 (has links)
This thesis presents a gender analysis of the IT managerial career progression process. The research includes case studies conducted within the IT division of four companies and survey results of IT managers carried out in the U K. The case studies include the collection of documentary evidence, observation and a total of fifty interviews conducted with IT managers and Personnel representatives. The case companies comprise the financial services, utility, retail and IT manufacturing sectors. This study builds on and extends existing knowledge within three areas of literature - women in management, gender and IT and career progression. Despite arguments within and between these fields of literature this study demonstrates how, due to gaps and weaknesses within each of the areas, it is necessary for them to be brought together under a single theoretical framework. Additionally, on an organisational level, by seeking out and analysing both formal and informal factors that influence the career progression of IT managers, aspects of this process that may inhibit women's IT managerial career progression are identified. This study concludes that there are aspects of both the IT management role and the associated career progression process that may be identified as gendered. Such aspects influence the career choices made by IT managers, leading to some identifiable differences in the approaches men and women adopt in progressing their careers. In addition, it is suggested that the gendered aspects have greater negative influence on the career progression opportunities and potential of women than men IT managers.

Etude de la formation des opportunités entrepreneuriales en Tunisie / How do entrepreneurial opportunities emerge and develop in the Tunisian context ?

Chaabouni, Haithem 25 October 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to bring new theoretical and empirical insights about the formation of entrepreneurial opportunities. For getting a better understanding of this phenomenon, we have followed two main approaches: the discovery approach and the creation-of- opportunities approach. A quantitative research based on a questionnaire was conducted among a number of Tunisian entrepreneurs in order to identify the factors that have influenced on the formation of entrepreneurial opportunities. The results of the research show that the discovery of opportunities is prevalent given that the Tunisian entrepreneurial ecosystem does not promote innovation, and creation of opportunities. This research work contributes to the knowledge of entrepreneurial practices and the modes of coaching entrepreneurs.

Enhanced access for re-entry into education, training is is seen to enable women to achieve self-fulfilment and to enhance employment opportunities

McNickle, Cathy, n/a January 1994 (has links)
The study topic undertaken was "Enhanced access for re-entry into education, training is seen to enable women to achieve self-fulfilment and enhance employment opportunities". Thesis Proposition and Study Problem : The topic was undertaken to study groups of women during different stages of education, training to see whether they did achieve self-fulfilment and had better employment opportunities if they did have enhanced access for re-entry into education, training. The study briefly looks at the progress by women chronologically, from the late nineteenth century until today, noting the major changes that have given greater gender eguity within the workplace. Methodology : The study focused on four different case studies; each case study focusing on different women who were at different stages of education, training. The study ensured it also focused on women who had gone into nontraditional roles to gain a greater insight as a result of women being given greater access, whether it has played a role in women having the opportunity to gain greater career opportunities and self-fulfilment as a result. Results : Some of the key results were that if women were given the opportunities of education, training that they were able to achieve self-fulfilment and their employment opportunities were enhanced. It was also evident that women were increasing in numbers to study at university. There were a number of inequalities noted still, although there have been a number of changes in recent times. These changes were also noted, as well as the barriers that are still evident. The study identifies different areas within education/employment whereby there are barriers and inequalities. The changes in training/legislation are also noted. Conclusions : The study is concluded by compiling the results of the four case studies and presenting these as well as other evidence from a variety of sources clarifying the investigation that "Enhanced access for re-entry into education, training is seen to enable women to achieve self-fulfilment and enhance employment opportunities".

Tsai, Ting-Huai 27 January 2003 (has links)
It would possibly face a great challenge under the framework of WTO (World Trade Organization), our domestic agri-market should be impacted by the opening up international market. Our farmers are habituated for the payment and protection policies by the government for a long time, so that the market competence is rather poor. Therefore, after joining WTO, as the international market opens up, the direct payment and set-aside premium would only palliative the short term problem. With the shortage of the exchequer, the deficiency could reveal. And the basic and essential trend of the future agricultural changeover pattern is to consider how to establish a competitive and distinctive operating prototype for our agriculture for the long-term solution. This research takes the important agricultural area of Koahsiung County in southern Taiwan as an example. The main topic of this research focuses on the production of the tropical fruit for the specialized agricultural products. Step by step aiming at internal advantage, disadvantage and external possibility, and threats. And examine the organizational environment for the research by collecting of documents and references, interviewing with related personnel and further having questionnaire from academics, experiment units, agricultural administration personnel, farmers¡¦ union (farmers¡¦ association), production-line & sales farmers. According to the result of the questionnaire, we have the following conclusion: 1: Overall evaluation (Tropical Fruit) found the following conclusion: (1) Top four tropical fruits that are considered to be most competitive in southern Taiwan, the first is Wax-apple, the second is Jin-Huang Mango, the third is Guava and the forth is Lychee with over 50% identification. (2) The less competitive is Longan at ninth position (14.2%) with the less identification percentage. 2: We have the following conclusion after analyzing each characters of SWOT on its identification level: (1) For the Strength we found (S) that the weather condition in southern Taiwan is beneficial local tropical fruit planting and has more confident in technological and quality aspects. (2) For the Weakness (W) we found that that having high labor cost, lacking marketing personnel, petty farmland, and aging population are becoming growing burden. (3) In the Opportunity (O) we found that by establishing quality brand, diversifying operation and strategic alliance, referring the experience from member nations, create business possibility for weekend holiday as to change the operating style and method for strategic direction. (4) In The Threats (T) we found that under the pressure of being threatened with foreign low cost, abundance and diverse agriculture products by developed member countries in WTO, and production circle and nature condition etc. are also to be concerned in order to break through for the strategic direction decision. To sum up, this research hope to bring out and present a correct strategic direction with eight concrete policy and ten advisement for the agricultural policy department to follow the right direction to suit the agriculture operation style for both government related agricultural governing body and farmer to face and challenge the coming impact for our agricultural development after joining WTO.
