This study aimed to know and to understand the community structure, population dynamics and the taxonomy of Acridoidea grasshoppers in a forest area of eastern Amazonia. For ecological study, sampling was performed monthly from 2008 to 2011, in Flona Caxiuanã (01º57'36.82 "S and 51º36,47'61" W), Portel, Pará, 400 km from Belem. The grasshoppers were collected with entomological nets on two tracks, each of 5 km in length and 1 m in width , the sampling site of PPBio Eastern Amazon. Samples were collected from 8 a.m to 16 p.m., due to the diurnal habit of grasshoppers, so a wide variety of individuals and species could be captured. For the taxonomic study, the captured adults in the sampling were examined, in addition to the Invertebrates Collection of specimens of the Goeldi Museum (MPEG). In total, 10,541 specimens were collected, belonging to three families, eight subfamilies, 19 tribes, 40 genera and 51 species. The Acrididae family was the most abundant (71.7%). Among the captured specimens 60.9% were nymphs and 39.1% adults. Among the adults 56.1% were males and 43.9% females. It was detected the existence of two dominant, four abundant, three common and 42 rare or minimal species. Most species are dendrophilia (58.8%) with gregarious habit (62.7%). A dichotomous key was elaborated for the collected adult specimens in the primary forest and the already existing in the MPEG collection, originating from Caxiuanã. 30 new cases were recorded for Flona Caxiuanã, 14 for the state of Pará, six for Brazil and two for the Amazonian region, a new species (Taeniphora. spp.) and the discovery of 47 endemic species for the Amazon. The population peak for adults occurs in the rainy and for the nymphs in the less rainy season. Temperature and humidity are the climatic factors that most influence the population dynamics of grasshoppers. This study contributed to the expansion of the geographical distribution of Acridoidea species and the occurrence of grasshoppers at Flona Caxiuanã as well as to increase the ecological and taxonomic knowledge of Acridofauna in the Amazon region.

The species traditionally known were Bucrates capitatus (De Geer, 1773), Bucrates clausus (Scudder, 1878), Bucrates malivolans (Scudder, 1878), Bucrates lanista Rehn, 1918 and Bucrates weissmani Walker, 2014. Most of the descriptions are old and poor in characters, which does not effectively separate the species within the genus, once almost all species were described based only on one or two exemplars. The species within Bucrates are polymorphic, and two or more variations can be found in the same population, which increases the need for a more exhaustive taxonomic study. The species of the monotypic genus Parabucrates Scudder, 1897, Parabucrates brevicauda (Scudder, 1869) was included in this study due to extreme similarity of male genitalia with some species within Bucrates. Other species within Bucrates have male genitalia similar to other closely related genera, which indicates the need of a redescription of the genus, in order to define satisfactorily the characteristics that define Bucrates and its members. This taxonomic study was based on 164 specimens prevenient from depository collections and excursions. The specimens are from Colombia and at least one state of which Brazilian region. Parabucrates brevicauda (Scudder, 1869) was reallocated as Bucrates brevicauda (Scudder, 1869) comb. nov. and Parabucrates was synonymized to Bucrates. The male of B. lanista was described for the first time, as well as a new species for the genus. In addition, a new genus was proposed to allocate the species Gen. nov. clausus (Scudder, 1878) comb. nov.. The distribution of all South-American species was expanded. As espécies tradicionalmente conhecidas eram Bucrates capitatus (De Geer, 1773), Bucrates clausus (Scudder, 1878), Bucrates malivolans (Scudder, 1878), Bucrates lanista Rehn, 1918 e Bucrates weissmani Walker, 2014.

Revision of certain pyrgomorphid genera previously included in the Orthacridini (Orthoptera), together with descriptions of closely related new genera.

Singh, Asket. January 1964 (has links)
The first independant treatment of the acridoid family Orthoptera, Pyrgomorphidae, was that of Bolivar (1884). A revision was published later by Bolivar (1904-5) and this was summarised with s1ight modification shortly afterwards (Bolivar, 1909). No comprehensive review has been pub1ished subsequently, although a revision of the tribal arrangement was recently the subject of study by Akbar (1963) who gives a full review of the various changes that have occurred at the suprageneric level up to the present. The Taxonomy of Utah orthoptera with notes on distribution

Barnum, Andrew H. 01 June 1952 (has links)
To an entomologist, the Orthoptera1 is in a state of confusion with respect to the available literature. Work has been done, and is now being done on the orthopteran fauna, but manuals tor identification of most species are not available for all sections or the country. Exclusive of a few lim-ited groups, Utah is among the areas that has no complete keys for taxonomic workers. In biological ivenstigations identification is essential: The species being studied must be definitely known. The primary purpose of this study, therefore, is to list the Utah Orthoptera and provide the keys necessary to their critical study.
