A model of long-haul hybrid-electric trucks was developed and analyzed to identify the economic benefits of hybrids during the 2009 to 2030 timeframe. Variables that were studied included the trucks operating miles, vehicle life years, fuel efficiency, hybrid fuel efficiency, cost of hybrid truck technology and diesel fuel costs. The model was studied using a case study of long-haul tractors to determine the life cycle savings of hybrid trucks during the twenty-year time period. It was predicted that hybrid long-haul trucks will be an option for trucks that have a majority of their operating cost spent on fuel and the truck is capable of achieving an improved efficiency of five-percent or greater. It was concluded that hybrid trucks will become more economical than a conventional diesel truck and generate a savings for fleet owners by as early as the year 2014. Recommendation for further study is enclosed.

This was a qualitative research study involving Aboriginal offenders at a Federal institution in the Ontario Region. The purpose of this study was to illuminate the Aboriginal offenders‘ perspectives on their experiences that led to their incarceration. The major research questions guiding this study include: 1. What experiences do Aboriginal offenders feel contributed to their incarceration? 2. What do Aboriginal offenders feel could have prevented their incarceration? 3. How do Aboriginal offenders describe their experiences with the Residential School and child welfare systems? 4. What are the Aboriginal offenders' perspectives on their experiences with CSC‘s healing and intervention programs? One of the goals of this study was to provide information to CSC to improve the reintegration programs and help Aboriginal offenders become law abiding citizens. The data was collected from individual interviews, which was analyzed in detail to develop themes. The analyses sought for stories that captured the depth of the experiences that led to the Aboriginal offenders‘ incarcerations. This study provided the personal perspective of the offenders as to how the Residential School and child welfare system have impacted their lives, and offers some insight into the over-representation of Aboriginal offenders in the prison system. This study also demonstrated how the socio-economic situation of these Aboriginal offenders played a role in their path towards prison. It is important to capture the voices of the iii Aboriginal offenders‘ experiences towards incarceration. Their stories offer ways to help other Aboriginal people. We must have Aboriginal community members involved in the lives of Aboriginal youth to prevent them from getting into trouble, and find alternative positives outlets and activities. We must instill and provide hope and inspiration so that our youth have something to look forward to in their lives. I know this is happening to varying degrees in our Aboriginal communities; however, we need to keep working towards this goal. Wavelength reuse techniques for bidirectional ultra-wide band (UWB) over fiber (UWBoF) networks are presented. The downstream optical signal from the central station (CS) is reused for upstream data transmission with the original data erased at the base station (BS). Two wavelength reuse schemes for the generation of a clear optical carrier at the BS are theoretically analyzed and experimentally demonstrated. In the first scheme, the wavelength reuse is based on phase-modulation to intensity-modulation (PM-IM) conversion and destructive interferencing using a polarization modulator (PolM) and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). A theoretical analysis is performed which is verified by an experiment. In the second scheme, the wavelength reuse is based on injection locking of a Fabry–Pérot laser diode (FP-LD) and polarization multiplexing. The UWB injection signal contributes to better BERs of both downstream and upstream services and a lower power penalty cause by the wavelength reuse of the whole system than the baseband signal. A bidirectional point-to-point transmission of over a 25-km single-mode fiber (SMF) using a single wavelength from the CS in each scheme is demonstrated.

Class of 2016 Abstract & Report / Specific Aims: This study aims to evaluate the use and rationale of dietary supplement use by pharmacists and to assess whom pharmacists are recommending them to. Methods: Arizona licensed pharmacists were surveyed using Qualtrics software. The survey consisted of questions starting with listing common vitamin, mineral and herbal products used personally. Respondents were then asked to indicate a purpose for use and if they would recommend personally used products to patients, family or friends. Demographics such as area of practice, gender and age were also collected. Data were analyzed by calculating summary frequency and percentages with a priori alpha level of 0.05. Main Results: Of the 10,899 surveys sent, 528 respondents completed the survey. The average respondent age was 46.6 ± 14.4, 40% were male and 42% practiced in community pharmacy Overall use was: multivitamin (95.54%), vitamin C (78.24%), vitamin D (73.31%), calcium (73.13%), and B vitamin(s) (70.03%). The most common reasons for use were “general health and wellness” and “to treat or cure a specific disease or health problem.” Overall use of supplements was lower; 58% for fish oil while only 25% used chondroitin. More community pharmacists used all types of dietary supplements (p < 0.05). Most pharmacists would recommend the products to patients. Conclusions: (39) Pharmacists use dietary supplements at rates similar to the general public and would recommend the noted products to patients. This is particularly relevant because existing well designed studies evaluating efficacy and safety of the products in question are limited.

The effect of different treatments on crossing over between and within genes at the tip of the X chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster was studied to determine whether exchange in the two regions occurs by different mechanisms. In response to autosomal inversions, ɣ -radiation, and heat shock, crossing over of both types was altered in the same direction and to a comparable extent. This would be expected if there were only one crossover mechanism involved. There was some difference in response of interlocus and intralocus crossing over after mitomycin C injection but, since the effect on interlocus crossing over in two separate regions was not consistent, the significance of this result is questionable. Although double crossing over involving the two interlocus regions was very rare doubles involving an inter and an intralocus region were recovered. The association of exchanges within a gene with a crossover between genes might indicate that there are two noninterfering mechanisms, or that multiple exchanges occur in short effectively paired regions.
