Guided automatic binary parallelisation

Zhou, Ruoyu January 2018 (has links)
For decades, the software industry has amassed a vast repository of pre-compiled libraries and executables which are still valuable and actively in use. However, for a significant fraction of these binaries, most of the source code is absent or is written in old languages, making it practically impossible to recompile them for new generations of hardware. As the number of cores in chip multi-processors (CMPs) continue to scale, the performance of this legacy software becomes increasingly sub-optimal. Rewriting new optimised and parallel software would be a time-consuming and expensive task. Without source code, existing automatic performance enhancing and parallelisation techniques are not applicable for legacy software or parts of new applications linked with legacy libraries. In this dissertation, three tools are presented to address the challenge of optimising legacy binaries. The first, GBR (Guided Binary Recompilation), is a tool that recompiles stripped application binaries without the need for the source code or relocation information. GBR performs static binary analysis to determine how recompilation should be undertaken, and produces a domain-specific hint program. This hint program is loaded and interpreted by the GBR dynamic runtime, which is built on top of the open-source dynamic binary translator, DynamoRIO. In this manner, complicated recompilation of the target binary is carried out to achieve optimised execution on a real system. The problem of limited dataflow and type information is addressed through cooperation between the hint program and JIT optimisation. The utility of GBR is demonstrated by software prefetch and vectorisation optimisations to achieve performance improvements compared to their original native execution. The second tool is called BEEP (Binary Emulator for Estimating Parallelism), an extension to GBR for binary instrumentation. BEEP is used to identify potential thread-level parallelism through static binary analysis and binary instrumentation. BEEP performs preliminary static analysis on binaries and encodes all statically-undecided questions into a hint program. The hint program is interpreted by GBR so that on-demand binary instrumentation codes are inserted to answer the questions from runtime information. BEEP incorporates a few parallel cost models to evaluate identified parallelism under different parallelisation paradigms. The third tool is named GABP (Guided Automatic Binary Parallelisation), an extension to GBR for parallelisation. GABP focuses on loops from sequential application binaries and automatically extracts thread-level parallelism from them on-the-fly, under the direction of the hint program, for efficient parallel execution. It employs a range of runtime schemes, such as thread-level speculation and synchronisation, to handle runtime data dependences. GABP achieves a geometric mean of speedup of 1.91x on binaries from SPEC CPU2006 on a real x86-64 eight-core system compared to native sequential execution. Performance is obtained for SPEC CPU2006 executables compiled from a variety of source languages and by different compilers.

Parallelization of Aggregated FMUs using Static Scheduling

Hammar, Mattias January 2018 (has links)
This thesis implements and evaluates static scheduling for aggregated FMUs. An aggregate FMU is several coupled FMUs placed in a single FMU. The implementation creates task graphs from the internal dependencies and connections between the coupled FMUs. These task graphs are then scheduled using two different list scheduling heuristics, MCP and HLFET. The resulting schedules are then executed in parallel by using OpenMP in the runtime. The implementation is evaluated by looking at the utilization of the schedule, the execution time of the scheduling and the speedup of the simulation. These measurements are taken on three different test models. With model exchange FMUs only a really small speedup is observed. With co-simulation models the speedup varies a lot depending on the model, the highest achieved speedup was 2.8 running on four cores.

Simulação geoestatística utilizando múltiplos passeios aleatórios

Caixeta, Rafael Moniz January 2015 (has links)
Geostatistical simulation comprises a variety of techniques, which allow the generation of multiple scenarios reproducing the spatial continuity and the histogram of the desired phenomenon (grades for instance). These methods can be used in the decision making process, allowing the assess to the uncertainty of functions responses (which depend on the simulated inputs) commonly through a non-linear relationship (net present value, interest tax return, ore geometallurgical recovery…). However, one of their limitations is that running simulation can take a considerable processing time to be executed in large deposits or large grids. Therefore, the motivation of this dissertation focuses on this fact, leading to the main goal, i.e. investigating an alternative to accelerate the simulation process. The option chosen is based on the development and adaptation of the Multiple Random Walk Simulation, which is algorithm to build geostatistical simulations. It combines kriging with the simulation of independent random walks in order to generate simulated scenarios faster than via traditional simulation algorithms. This dissertation presents details of the method and new important contributions developed to improve its performance and statistics reproduction. An algorithm and software was also presented in order to allow a simple, practical and fast use of the method in any condition (2D or 3D). Case studies were developed to check the validity of the simulations, which showed good reproduction of histogram and variograms, in addition to a considerable speed gain, achieving an acceleration up to 5.65 x (in comparison with Turning Bands Simulation) in the simulation of a 3D iron deposit, performance that can be enhanced as more conditioning samples are available.

Parallel SAT solvers and their application in automatic parallelization / SAT solvers paralelos e suas aplicações em paralelização automática

Silveira, Jaime Kirch da January 2014 (has links)
Since the slowdown in improvement in the frequency of processors, a new tendency has arisen to allow software to take advantage of faster hardware: parallelization. A Case Study of  Semi-Automatic Parallelization of  Divide and Conquer Algorithms Using Invasive Interactive Parallelization

Hansson, Erik January 2009 (has links)
Since computers supporting parallel execution have become more and more common the last years, especially on the consumer market,  the need for methods and tools for parallelizing existing sequential programs has highly increased. Today there exist different methods of achieving this, in a more or less user friendly way. We have looked at one method, Invasive Interactive Parallelization (IIP), on a special problem area, divide and conquer algorithms, and performed a case study. This case study shows that by using IIP, sequential programs can be parallelized both for shared and distributed memory machines. We have focused on parallelizing Quick Sort for OpenMP and MPI environment using a tool, Reuseware, which is based on the concepts of Invasive Software Composition.
