A GT study of parent adjustment after the birth of a child with a facial birthmark

Gait, Lucy January 2017 (has links)
Little is known about the experiences of parental adjustment following the birth of a child with a facial birthmark due to a scarcity of literature. The literature within the fields of cleft lip and palate (CL/P) and cranio-facial abnormality (CFA) suggest that there are many factors involved in the process of parental adjustment. The aim of this project was to explore how parents adjust following the birth of their child with a facial birthmark. In-depth interviews were conducted with 13 parents of children aged between birth and two years old. The data was analysed using a Constructivist Grounded Theory approach and a model of adjustment was co-constructed from the data. It appears that parents move through a process of adjustment, that begins with coping with the initial shock and uncertainty before moving on to understanding the birthmark and treatment options, making sense of the birthmark, developing coping strategies and adjusting to birthmark. This process is affected by the availability of resources and the extent of social challenges experienced by the parents. The findings of this study indicate that psychology should be routinely involved with the assessment of parental psycho-social well-being and psycho-social support should be promoted for these families. Furthermore, greater training about birthmarks for medical professionals is recommended.

The experiences of parents of adolescents with disabilities during the transition to adulthood

Haver, Carol Elizabeth 13 March 2017 (has links)
Research indicates that parental involvement in transition planning for adolescents with disabilities is associated with more successful adult outcomes as well as higher family well-being and parental satisfaction Given that parents invest more time and energy into transition planning for their child with a disability than one without, and that parental involvement is associated with transitional success, it is important to understand parental experiences during transition so that the best and most comprehensive support can be provided to them. This qualitative study examined how parents of youth with disabilities describe their own, personal experiences of their son or daughter’s transition to adulthood. A conceptual model was developed to describe the tension between parents’ preparedness for and their emotions regarding the transition process. This tension ultimately contributes to a sense of uncertainty about their son or daughter’s future.

Parent involvement in secondary special education and transition: A psychometric study

Hirano, Kara 27 October 2016 (has links)
This study evaluated a model of parent involvement in secondary special education and transition planning and identified motivators affecting a parent’s decision to become involved. Survey data were collected from a national sample of 300 parents of transition-age youth with disabilities. Results of a confirmatory factor analysis indicated the model fit the data for this sample. Four motivators were associated with parental decisions to become involved: Child invitations for involvement were associated with home, school/agency and future planning involvement. Teacher invitations and time and energy were associated with school/agency involvement, and role construction was associated with home involvement. Age, disability type, and SES impacted motivators of involvement. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

An assessment of the perceptions of parental practices which place children at-risk for abuse and neglect

Cottee, Gail Janine January 2012 (has links)
Magister Artium (Child and Family Studies) - MA(CFS) / Parental practices play a vital role in children lives. The manner in which parents interact with their children, can promotes and support the physical, emotional, social and intellectual development of a child from infancy to adulthood. It could be describe as the process, whereby children learn to be responsible, and the consequences of their actions with the assistance of their parents. The aim of the study was to assess the perceptions of parental practices, which could place children at risk for abuse and neglect. This study used the quantitative method with a cross-sectional comparative design to examine and compare parental practices of parents, whose children were victims of abuse or neglect across gender, marital status and socio economic status. A sample of 163 participants (87 mothers and 76 fathers), who were either single or married and their socio economic status varied from the lower to the higher income group participated in the study. The participants completed the questionnaire, which was based on the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI) and the data was analyzed by means of the Statistical Package in the Science (SPSS version 20). The results suggest that there are no significant differences between parents based on socio-economic status and marital status. However, there were significant differences between mothers‟ and fathers‟ care and overprotection.Furthermore, mothers were identified as being affectionless controlling in their parenting practices (low care and high overprotection) and fathers as affectionately constraining in their parenting practices (high care and high protection). Recommendations are provided for this study.
