This study investigates success in parental mental health and child welfare work. Research has established the potential direct and indirect impacts of mental illness on parenting, the parent–child relationship, and the child, and the extent to which this poses a public health challenge. Problems with how adult and children’s services understand and deliver support to parents with mental health problems and their children have also been identified. In contrast, there has been little research about how parents with mental health difficulties and their children can be supported successfully. ‘What works’, or what constitutes success in parental mental health and child welfare work is missing from the literature. This study aims to begin to address this gap by providing an original contribution to conceptualising and evaluating success in parental mental health and child welfare work. This is an exploratory study, and as such covers a diverse population, i.e. different family members, different cultural and ethnic backgrounds, parents with different diagnoses, and statutory and voluntary sector agencies. The main issue here is to cover diversity; in terms of exploring different opinions of success – both in outcomes and processes – rather than to ensure applicability of the findings to all families in which there are parents experiencing mental illness. An interpretative approach was chosen for the study (within that data) to explore these issues. This was obtained by undertaking a multiple embedded case study methodology (Yin, 2003) with 12 families and their key workers from community mental health, children’s social care and the voluntary sector. Data collection was undertaken in three stages: individual interviews with parents, children and the professionals who support them; a review of the agency case files kept about the same families; and three focus groups. Participants were asked to identify successful situations that had occurred in each case study family during the 18 months prior to interview and give details about why these situations worked out well. The focus groups were convened to discuss the emerging findings from the first two phases of data collection. An examination of emerging themes, and the interplay between themes, gives insight into the shared ideas about what works and the shared methods and practices that are associated with successful outcomes. On the basis of these similarities, the findings offer a contribution to knowledge and practice about a mode of working which seems to make it possible to succeed in helping families previously considered beyond help. What is more, the practitioners also benefit from the helping relationship in this context.

Digest in English The master thesis called Hearing parents - Deaf child addresses issues concerning the specific situation of hearing parents with a hearing-impaired child. It deals with the main influences affecting what parents experience in this state of affairs. Based on Czech and foreign resources, the thesis specifies both theoretically and practically these influences on parental experiences. Firstly, general aspects which affect experiences in relation to any type of child's disability are introduced, with particular focus on specifics in case of hearing impairment. Secondly, those occurrences are described which parents are confronted with only if they raise a hearing-impaired child. The theoretical part deals with the etiology of hearing impairment and with abnormal features in child development, with emphasis on the field of communication. Further, it pursues the subjects of education and cochlear implants. Feelings and experiences of families with deaf children are also explored. Moreover, the system of care for children with hearing impairment and their families is examined. Finally, a short overview of the life of the Deaf is presented. Title: Football as an extracurricural activity in the first grade of elementary school The goal of this thesis is to explore the role of football in the first grade of elementary school as an extracurricular activity from the child, parent, and coach perspectives. I assessed the frequency of this sport through carefully directed interviews with elementary school children. I conducted yet more interviews at football practices at different competitive levels to determine the popularity amongst players and its influence on them. I further examined the financial and time demands of this extracurricular activity through sending out surveys to parents. Parental responsibility Resumé - Zusammenfassung In der Arbeit habe ich mich mit Felsenklippen beschafft, die aus der spezifischen Verhältnisse zwischen Eltern und Kinder stammen, die Spezifität dieses Verhältnis ist durch die tatsächliche Ungleichheit den Subjekten gegeben, mit der Notwendigkeit die Schutz der schwächeren Seite - des Kindes zu sichern, ihren persönlichen Rechten sowie materialen Versicherung. Weiter die begrenzte Fähigkeit zu rechtlichem Tun des Kindes löst aus nicht nur den Brauch für es handeln, aber auch die Notwendigkeit es lenken, erziehen und die Aufsicht von ihm ausüben, denn das Kind hat begrenzte delinquente Fähigkeit, und die eventuelle Verantwortlichkeit für die Schaden, die einerseits dem Kind anderseits den dritte Personen verschuldet sind, tragen in der Regel die Eltern. Zu dem Vollzug diesen spezifischen Rechten und Pflichten den Eltern ist nötig ihnen die Kompetenz zu überlassen, die wir in anderen rechtlichen Verhältnisse auch nicht finden. Einer der Zielen meiner Arbeit war zu forschen, wie diese tatsächliche Ungleichheit zwischen den Subjekten die rechtliche Aufbereitung kompensiert, denn der Schutz der schwächeren Seite ist eine der Grundsatz, an denen das Privatrecht und vor allem Bürgerrecht basiert.
