British churches, participation and community development

Scofield, Joseph January 2011 (has links)
In the British welfare sector, the role of religious groups in offering faith based welfare provision is substantial and addresses a wide variety of needs. Such action is not confined to the Christian faith, since other religious faiths generate welfare initiatives of their own. Nor is faith motivated welfare provision restricted to meeting basic human needs, as it can include efforts to build community relations and also encompasses community development approaches that support citizens to come together to create self-help projects. In fact the latter themes sometimes appear linked in social policy where community development is seen as a way of generating cohesive and cooperative communities, particularly in areas where there are ethnic divides to be bridged (Pearmain and Hatamian 2011: 1-2). This thesis focusses on one aspect of faith involvement in the welfare sector. It investigates whether British churches can adopt a community development approach, and in so doing, produce the positive outcomes that are associated with community participation neighbourhood regeneration. In this chapter I show how that topic has become pertinent to today’s welfare climate and the community development profession. I introduce a number of research questions that must be answered in order to argue that churches can embrace a community development approach, and outline how these questions are addressed in my literature reviews and case studies of churches in the chapters that follow.

Communitarian participation in projects of local development: a study in the Marins, Piquete/SP. / Participação comunitária em projetos de desenvolvimento local: um estudo no bairro dos Marins, Piquete/SP.

Cíntia Manfredini 24 March 2005 (has links)
It was attended, in the last decades, to a bigger care of the man with the environment questions, the planet preservation and the continuity of biodiversity. Local development and participation establish, today, central concepts in the public discussion concerning the picture of social exclusion that persists, the same, after decades of public politics to the combat of the poorness. These two concepts synthesize the presupposed of that the development concept is more extensive than the mere economic growth, and involves aspects of quality of life of the individual, such as social inclusion, protection to the cultural diversity, rational use of natural resources, etc. The particular concern with the subject, sustainable development, originates from the experience in the district of the Marins, city of Piquete, and the observation and the break out of its recent history. In this offer the researcher has active paper in the solution of the found problems, in the accompaniment and estimate of the actions; choose, therefore for the researchaction, carried through in workshops with the community. It is considered to search the essential factors that obstruct the communitarian process of articipation in the local development, having as base the process in the community. In this way for the adopted methodology, it was possible to classify the problem - participation of the community in the process of local development - in groups and sub-groups of affinities, to order them consigning the degree of priority given to each one of them. Resulting itself in: public politics, knowledge (education), qualification, organization and integration. In the research it was evident that actions drawn for the promotion of the development must not only be given of decentralized form, but must be concentrated, essentially, in the "place" where the concrete daily life happens. It still verified that the participation if becomes more sustainable, when does not restrict the processes of consultations, or an accidental participation, but if is a constituent element of the daily one. One becomes basic the strategically vision and the respective will of the government to become the experiences pilots in public politics.

<strong>Exploring the role of environmental planning and community development in informing local government policies: Opportunities, challenges, and recommendations for sustainable development</strong>

Kara Salazar (16642041) 07 August 2023 (has links)
<p>  </p> <p>Environmental planning decisions are complex and influenced by many factors, such as federal, state, and local regulations, community values, and economic and environmental considerations. Across the United States, local elected and appointed boards and commissions are responsible for planning and implementing land use regulations. Using Indiana communities as a case study, this study focused on understanding the roles of environmental planning and community development in adopting local government policies related to sustainable development. Opportunities, challenges, and trends facing diverse Indiana communities were explored through focus groups and surveys, specifically focusing on local ordinances, comprehensive plans, and parks and recreation master plans as policy instruments. Factors of interest included environmental and sustainable development considerations in plans and ordinances, the engagement of residents, stakeholders, and other interested parties in local environmental planning processes and decision-making, the potential influence of collaboration and social capital in planning and decision-making, and technical assistance and resource needs for planners and parks and recreation staff. </p> <p><br></p> <p>Indiana communities are integrating environmental considerations into local ordinances and policies on a limited scale based on multiple factors such as local expertise, staff time, awareness, community and political acceptance, and immediate needs. Communities have little time allocated to incorporate voluntary efforts and rely most on peer groups and existing staff for models and information sharing with private consultants filling in gaps for plan and ordinance updates. There are multiple opportunities to expand environmental conservation and sustainable development efforts through increasing the diversity of local boards and commissions, enhancing community engagement, identifying and supporting succinct and targeted training for planning and parks and recreation professionals, and tapping into state and federal funding opportunities to build on local successes that build credibility and interest for broader adoption. Additional emphasis on communication and collaboration are also needed to move towards more engaged planning and policy development methods.</p>

Structure and agency in community media: a comparative case study of Alex news and Greater Alex today

Moyo, Charity Ntokozo 11 1900 (has links)
The objective of this study was to investigate whether community print media is fulfilling its developmental mandate in society using a comparative study of Alex News and Greater Alex Today community newspapers. This study is as the result of an outcry from various stakeholders claiming that community print media is no longer playing its developmental role in society due to the impact of structure and agency. They also claim that community media is no longer representing the interests and needs of the communities that it serves and lacks community participation. There are also concerns that community print media is no longer serving historically disadvantaged communities and is failing in its role to disseminate information in the community. They claimed that the control and ownership of community media is not in the hands of the community that it is supposed to serve, but in the hands of outsiders who are after business opportunities and profit-making. The qualitative research method was used for this study and the findings correlated with the literature reviewed. It concluded that the constraints of structure and agency is shaping the role of community media in society. Based on these findings the research recommends that government should assist the community newspapers by providing a subsidised printing machine that can be placed in a central place for easy access by the community newspapers. It also recommends that the community newspaper should transform from the traditional newspaper print to digital media to cut the printing costs and that the government should allocate more funds to MDDA. / Communication Science / M.A. (Communication Science)
