The use of media technology in foreign language teaching and learning at university level : a study of teachers' attitudes in Korea

Despite the potential and increased availability of media technology, including advanced technologies such as computers and CD-ROM multimedia, teachers' actual use of technology, and particularly of the advanced technologies, in FLT/L in higher education in Korea still tends to be limited. The purposes of this study were, therefore: 1) to investigate the current patterns and contexts of teachers' (and for reference, students') use of media technology and their attitudes towards its use in FLT/L at university level in Korea; 2) to examine the cause of problems and the possibilities of improvement in its use in FLT/L; and 3) based on these findings, to suggest some solutions and strategies for applying them to the Korean context. Quantitative and qualitative research methods were adopted, i.e., questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations were used to collect the data required for this study. The subjects consisted of forty-eight teachers who teach English (and 535 students) at twelve universities in the central districts in Korea. In addition, workshopbased experiments were carried out to gather additional data on teachers' opinions and to evaluate the implications of the study. This study shows that the majority of Korean teachers (and students) have positive attitudes towards the use of media technology in FLT/L, with generally no significant gender and years of teaching experience (and academic years) differences, although they make little use of it. The study suggests that the availability of media technology equipment and appropriate materials in particular, teachers' knowledge of it, and proper teacher training have a positive impact on teachers' attitudes towards its use, and are, in addition to their positive attitudes, the other main factors influencing its successful implementation in FLT/L. It is concluded that to provide the teachers with sufficient knowledge of the capabilities of media technology and to encourage wider use, more access to hardware and software is necessary, and training to familiarise teachers with the hardware and software and its potential for language teaching is essential. Therefore, suggestions are made for the effective use of existing facilities, and for a model that could be adopted for teacher training courses.

The role of training and skills development in promoting performance improvement by municipalities in the Free State Province / Ezecheus Fanele Khambule

The introduction of training and skills development legislation, such as the Skills Development Act No. 97 of 1998, and the Skills Development Levies Act No. 9 of 1999, has forced organisations to invest in the development of skills of its employees in South Africa. The National Skills Development Strategy, the Human Resource Development Strategy for South Africa and the Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (ASGISA) are other legislative measures introduced by the South African government to contribute to the importance of training and skills development in organisations. It is necessary for the public sector organisations to train and develop the skills of its personnel in order to improve organisational, team and individual performance. Training and skills development should also assist in forming the basis for lifelong learning and to increase productivity and quality of work. A comprehensive human resource training and development strategy should be linked to the business strategy and the human resource management strategy in organisations. The primary objective of this study was to analyse the views of employees and to determine their level of awareness regarding training and skills development and how these can improve performance in the Free State Province municipalities. To reach this primary objective, a number of secondary objectives were considered as relevant. These included exploring the concepts of training, skills development and performance management. An analysis of statutory and regulatory guidelines pertaining to training and skills development and the assessment of structures, procedures and processes that exist in municipalities for the promotion of training and skills development were also highlighted. The effects of adequate training and skills development on performance in the Free State Province municipalities were analysed. Lastly, guidelines and recommendations regarding training, skills development and performance management were developed for municipalities in the Free State Province. The research was conducted in the Free State Province municipalities. It comprised of a literature study and an empirical survey using questionnaires and interviews to obtain information from managers, supervisors and frontline staff in the Free State Province municipalities. The respondents were tested on their views regarding the impact of training and skills development programmes in improving performance in their workplace. The findings of this research demonstrated that training and skills development enhances performance of personnel in specific functional areas in the Free State Province municipalities, and for this to be more effective on performance in municipalities, it should be provided adequately in specific areas of the Local Government Five Year Strategic Agenda, particularly to the Free State Province municipalities. Some of the most important findings of this research are the following: •that most of the managers and frontline staff in Free State Province municipalities received adequate training and skills development programmes; •that most of the trainings and skills development programmes received by managers in the Free State Province municipalities were related to their job tasks; •that managers and frontline staff in Free State Province municipalities felt motivated to do their job tasks after they were provided with training and skills development programmes; •that managers in Free State Province municipalities still find it difficult to ensure public participation by their communities even after training and skills development programmes were provided to them; and •that adequate training and skills development of personnel improves performance in many functional areas in municipalities in Free State Province. Determinants of employee readiness for organisational change

Organisations are continually confronting challenges to remain competitive and successful, which compels organisations to regularly re-evaluate their strategies, structures, policies, operations, processes and culture. Managing change effectively is however a main challenge in the change management domain because of massive human involvement. Thus, managers and change agents are eager to know how to encourage and effectively prepare employees for change situation. The aim of this doctoral study was to examine the determinant of employee readiness for organisational change. The objectives were to investigate employee commitment to the organisation and career and social relationships factors in public sector higher educational institutions of Pakistan where various change reforms has been introduced recently. This empirical study proceeded by a systematic review of literature that led to development of a conceptual model. The data was collected from a sample of teaching employees by using a survey questionnaire. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis run on statistical package for social sciences and confirmatory factor analysis on the structural equation modelling as well as on applied analysis of moment structure to assess the model fit of the study and hypotheses testing. Results showed that independent variables (emotional attachment, feeling of pride, pay/wages/rewards, promotion, job satisfaction, job involvement and social relationships in the workplace) were positively and significantly correlated to the dependent variable (readiness for organisational change). However, two variables i.e. supervisor and peer relations, and training and skills development were not found positive and significant to the readiness for organisational change. This study has methodological limitations, as it is a cross sectional study that used a survey questionnaire only in public sector higher education sector. This study provides empirical evidence for employee readiness predictor variables for organisational change. This study may contribute to the literature on change management, particularly for Pakistan, and may assist the management, change agents and practitioners of human resources management and development, and organisational behaviour in assessing, designing and evaluating new or existing programmes for organisational change.

Motorické testování dětí v základní etapě plaveckého tréninku / Motor testing of children in basic stage of swimming training

Title: Motor testing of children in elementary stage of swimming training Target: The main goal of the thesis is to determine level of motor skills of swimmers in elementary stage of training by means of UNIFITTEST (6-60) test battery. Findings will be compared with selected results of other groups of sporting and unsporting children age 10 - 12. Methods: Two basic methods were selected to obtain required data. A controlled interview with swimming coach was used in order to select the research group. Consequently selected swimmers were tested for motor condition according to UNIFITTEST (6 - 60) test battery (Měkota, Kovář et al. 2002). Data acquired from the selected tests were processed and graphically expressed using mathematic - statistical method. Comparative method was used to compare results of group unsporting children with selected group of children from modern pentathlon. Results: By evaluating all results from four basic tests UNIFITTEST (6 - 60) 61 % of the swimmers have acquired above average evaluation of motor performance. Comparison of swimming group and unsporting children proved better results of swimmers in 12 minute run and shudder. Caminhos da formação de gestores de sistemas e serviços de saúde: uma análise da adequação entre teoria e a prática?. O cotidiano da gestão dos sistemas serviços de saúde é constituído de questões que perpassam o contexto das políticas econômicas, interagem com as faces das incorporações tecnológicas, estando intimamente relacionado ao componente regional e social. Nesse ambiente de alta labilidade torna-se importante a utilização de mecanismos que reforcem a interação entre educação e trabalho. A responsabilidade da formação profissional deve relacionar-se aos resultados das necessidades da assistência à saúde, guiadas pelos resultados de avaliações sistemáticas. O objetivo principal desta tese consistiu em analisar a adequação do conteúdo teórico representado nas dimensões de competências do Curso de Especialização em Gestão em Saúde do IMS/UERJ face às reais necessidades de aplicação das competências gerenciais dos egressos no desempenho de suas funções no dia a dia de trabalho. O estudo a adequação dos conteúdos educacionais ás necessidades contextuais dos processos de trabalho, importa na leitura das condições de enfrentamento dos problemas cotidianos, as dificuldades ou facilidades de soluções podem variar em função do nível de apropriação dos saberes trabalhados no processo aprendizagem. Ainda que as dificuldades da gestão no ambiente da saúde não resultem apenas de fatores ligados á formação profissional, essa vertente precisar ser monitorada visando contribuir com as reais necessidades de desempenho dos gerentes. Tais necessidades podem ser facilitadas pelo aumento da capacidade de análise contextuais e pelo domínio de manuseio de ferramentas técnicas que se configurem como instrumentos de resolução de problemas na realidade cotidianas. A partir do problema pesquisado, e dos resultados encontrados foi possível concluir, respondendo às questões de partida: (i) O curso de Especialização em gestão de saúde do IMS/UERJ atende as necessidades de desempenho profissional de seus egressos em suas funções cotidianas gerenciais considerando as respostas destes, classificando em mais 80% das dimensões de competência componentes do conteúdo programático como muito importante e indispensável no desempenho pratico de suas funções cotidianas. (ii) Os ajustes á serem inseridos ao conteúdo programático do Curso de Especialização em Gestão de Saúde, segundo seus egressos, e demais entrevistados para o atendimento das reais necessidades de capacitação dos gerentes de sistemas e serviços de saúde, está configurado nas considerações finais desta tese. Os resultados dessa tese oferecem subsídios para formulação de conteúdo programático que fomentem as necessidades de profissionalização da gestão na saúde. O estudo dessas situações, no campo prático, aponta perspectivas positivas com a busca de aperfeiçoamento de programa de capacitação de gestão de saúde e, por conseguinte representa um investimento importante para a melhoria da assistência à saúde da população.
