Sensitivity Analysis for Shortest Path Problems and Maximum Capacity Path Problems in Undirected Graphs

This paper addresses sensitivity analysis questions concerning the shortest path problem and the maximum capacity path problem in an undirected network. For both problems, we determine the maximum and minimum weights that each edge can have so that a given path remains optimal. For both problems, we show how to determine these maximum and minimum values for all edges in O(m + K log K) time, where m is the number of edges in the network, and K is the number of edges on the given optimal path.

Σε πολλές εφαρμογές ωστόσο, μας ενδιαφέρουν περισσότερα από ένα κριτήρια προς βελτιστοποίηση. Robustness and Preferences in Combinatorial Optimization

In this thesis, we study robust combinatorial problems with interval data. We introduce several new measures of robustness in response to the drawbacks of existing measures of robustness. The idea of these new measures is to ensure that the solutions are satisfactory for the decision maker in all scenarios, including the worst case scenario. Therefore, we have introduced a threshold over the worst case costs, in which above this threshold, solutions are no longer satisfactory for the decision maker. It is, however, important to consider other criteria than just the worst case. Therefore, in each of these new measures, a second criteria is used to evaluate the performance of the solution in other scenarios such as the best case one. We also study the robust deviation p-elements problem. In fact, we study when this solution is equal to the optimal solution in the scenario where the cost of each element is the midpoint of its corresponding interval. Then, we finally formulate the robust combinatorial problem with interval data as a bicriteria problem. We also integrate the decision maker's preferences over certain types of solutions into the model. We propose a method that uses these preferences to find the set of solutions that are never preferred by any other solution. We call this set the final set. We study the properties of the final sets from a coherence point of view and from a robust point of view. From a coherence point of view, we study necessary and sufficient conditions for the final set to be monotonic, for the corresponding preferences to be without cycles, and for the set to be stable. Those that do not satisfy these properties are eliminated since we believe these properties to be essential. We also study other properties such as the transitivity of the preference and indifference relations and more. We note that many of our final sets are included in one another and some are even intersections of other final sets. From a robust point of view, we compare our final sets with different measures of robustness and with the first- and second-degree stochastic dominance. We show which sets contain all of these solutions and which only contain these types of solutions. Therefore, when the decision maker chooses his preferences to find the final set, he knows what types of solutions may or may not be in the set. Lastly, we implement this method and apply it to the Robust Shortest Path Problem. We look at how this method performs using different types of randomly generated instances.

New Algorithm and Data Structures for the All Pairs Shortest Path Problem

In 1985, Moffat-Takaoka (MT) algorithm was developed to solve the all pairs shortest path (APSP) problem. This algorithm manages to get time complexity of O(n² log n) expected time when the end-point independent model of probabilistic assumption is used. However, the use of a critical point introduced in this algorithm has made the implementation of this algorithm quite complicated and the running time of this algorithm is difficult to analyze. Therefore, this study introduces a new deterministic algorithm for the APSP that provides an alternative to the existing MT algorithm. The major advantages of this approach compared to the MT algorithm are its simplicity, intuitive appeal and ease of analysis. Moreover, the algorithm was shown to be efficient as the expected running time is the same O(n² log n). Performance of a good algorithm depends on the data structure used to speed up the operations needed by the algorithm such as insert, delete-min and decrease-key operations. In this study, two new data structures have been implemented, namely quaternary and dimensional heaps. In the experiment carried out, the quaternary heap that employed similar concept with the trinomial heap with a special insertion cache function performed better than the trinomial heap when the number of n vertices was small. Likewise, the dimensional heap data structure executed the decrease-key operation efficiently by maintaining the thinnest structure possible through the use of thin and thick edges, far surpassing the existing binary, Fibonacci and 2-3 heaps data structures when a special acyclic graph was used. Taken together all these promising findings, a new improved algorithm running on a good data structure can be implemented to enhance the computing accuracy and speed of todays computing machines.

Approximation Algorithms and Heuristics for a 2-depot, Heterogeneous Hamiltonian Path Problem

Various civil and military applications of UAVs, or ground robots, require a set of vehicles to monitor a group of targets. Routing problems naturally arise in this setting where the operators of the vehicles have to plan the paths suitably in order to optimize the use of resources available such as sensors, fuel etc. These vehicles may differ either in their structural (design and dynamics) or functional (sensing) capabilities. This thesis addresses an important routing problem involving two heterogeneous vehicles. As the addressed routing problem is NP-Hard, we develop an approximation algorithm and heuristics to solve the problem. Our approach involves dividing the routing problem into two sub-problems: Partitioning and Sequencing. Partitioning the targets involves finding two distinct sets of targets, each corresponding to one of the vehicles. We then find a sequence in which these targets need to be visited in order to optimize the use of resources to the maximum possible extent. The sequencing problem can be solved either by Christofides algorithm or the Lin-Kernighan Heuristic (LKH). The problem of partitioning is tackled by solving a Linear Program (LP) obtained by relaxing some of the constraints of an Integer Programming (IP) model for the problem. We observe the performance of two LP models for the partitioning. The first LP model is obtained by relaxing only the integrality constraints whereas in the second model relaxes both integrality and degree constraints. The algorithms were implemented in a C++ environment with the help of Concert Technology for CPLEX, and Boost Graph Libraries. The performance of these algorithms was studied for 50 random instances of varying problem sizes. It was found that on an average, the algorithms based on the first LP model provided better (closer to the optimum) solutions as compared to those based on the second LP model. We also observed that for both the LP models, the average quality of solutions given by the heuristics were found to be better ( within 5% of the optimum) than the average quality of solutions obtained from the approximation algorithm (between 30 - 60% of the optimum depending on the problem size).

The dynamic, resource-constrained shortest path problem on an acyclic graph with application in column generation and literature review on sequence-dependent scheduling

This dissertation discusses two independent topics: a resource-constrained shortest-path problem (RCSP) and a literature review on scheduling problems involving sequence-dependent setup (SDS) times (costs). RCSP is often used as a subproblem in column generation because it can be used to solve many practical problems. This dissertation studies RCSP with multiple resource constraints on an acyclic graph, because many applications involve this configuration, especially in column genetation formulations. In particular, this research focuses on a dynamic RCSP since, as a subproblem in column generation, objective function coefficients are updated using new values of dual variables at each iteration. This dissertation proposes a pseudo-polynomial solution method for solving the dynamic RCSP by exploiting the special structure of an acyclic graph with the goal of effectively reoptimizing RCSP in the context of column generation. This method uses a one-time “preliminary” phase to transform RCSP into an unconstrained shortest path problem (SPP) and then solves the resulting SPP after new values of dual variables are used to update objective function coefficients (i.e., reduced costs) at each iteration. Network reduction techniques are considered to remove some nodes and/or arcs permanently in the preliminary phase. Specified techniques are explored to reoptimize when only several coefficients change and for dealing with forbidden and prescribed arcs in the context of a column generation/branch-and-bound approach. As a benchmark method, a label-setting algorithm is also proposed. Computational tests are designed to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms and procedures. This dissertation also gives a literature review related to the class of scheduling problems that involve SDS times (costs), an important consideration in many practical applications. It focuses on papers published within the last decade, addressing a variety of machine configurations - single machine, parallel machine, flow shop, and job shop - reviewing both optimizing and heuristic solution methods in each category. Since lot-sizing is so intimately related to scheduling, this dissertation reviews work that integrates these issues in relationship to each configuration. This dissertation provides a perspective of this line of research, gives conclusions, and discusses fertile research opportunities posed by this class of scheduling problems. since, as a subproblem in column generation, objective function coefficients are updated using new values of dual variables at each iteration. Bounds for the Maximum-Time Stochastic Shortest Path Problem

A stochastic shortest path problem is an undiscounted infinite-horizon Markov decision process with an absorbing and costree target state, where the objective is to reach the target state while optimizing total expected cost. In almost all cases, the objective in solving a stochastic shortest path problem is to minimize the total expected cost to reach the target state. But in probabilistic model checking, it is also useful to solve a problem where the objective is to maximize the expected cost to reach the target state. This thesis considers the maximum-time stochastic shortest path problem, which is a special case of the maximum-cost stochastic shortest path problem where actions have unit cost. The contribution is an efficient approach to computing high-quality bounds on the optimal solution for this problem. The bounds are useful in themselves, but can also be used by other algorithms to accelerate search for an optimal solution.

Optimisation of large scale network problems

The Constrained Shortest Path Problem (CSPP) consists of finding the shortest path in a graph or network that satisfies one or more resource constraints. Without these constraints, the shortest path problem can be solved in polynomial time; with them, the CSPP is NP-hard and thus far no polynomial-time algorithms exist for solving it optimally. The problem arises in a number of practical situations. In the case of vehicle path planning, the vehicle may be an aircraft flying through a region with obstacles such as mountains or radar detectors, with an upper bound on the fuel consumption, the travel time or the risk of attack. The vehicle may be a submarine travelling through a region with sonar detectors, with a time or risk budget. These problems all involve a network which is a discrete model of the physical domain. Another example would be the routing of voice and data information in a communications network such as a mobile phone network, where the constraints may include maximum call delays or relay node capacities. This is a problem of current economic importance, and one for which time-sensitive solutions are not always available, especially if the networks are large. We consider the simplest form of the problem, large grid networks with a single side constraint, which have been studied in the literature. This thesis explores the application of Constraint Programming combined with Lagrange Relaxation to achieve optimal or near-optimal solutions of the CSPP. The following is a brief outline of the contribution of this thesis. Lagrange Relaxation may or may not achieve optimal or near-optimal results on its own. Often, large duality gaps are present. We make a simple modification to Dijkstra’s algorithm that does not involve any additional computational work in order to generate an estimate of path time at every node. / We then use this information to constrain the network along a bisecting meridian. The combination of Lagrange Relaxation (LR) and a heuristic for filtering along the meridian provide an aggressive method for finding near-optimal solutions in a short time. Two network problems are studied in this work. The first is a Submarine Transit Path problem in which the transit field contains four sonar detectors at known locations, each with the same detection profile. The side constraint is the total transit time, with the submarine capable of 2 speeds. For the single-speed case, the initial LR duality gap may be as high as 30%. The first hybrid method uses a single centre meridian to constrain the network based on the unused time resource, and is able to produce solutions that are generally within 1% of optimal and always below 3%. Using the computation time for the initial Lagrange Relaxation as a baseline, the average computation time for the first hybrid method is about 30% to 50% higher, and the worst case CPU times are 2 to 4 times higher. The second problem is a random valued network from the literature. Edge costs, times, and lengths are uniform, randomly generated integers in a given range. Since the values given in the literature problems do not yield problems with a high duality gap, the values are varied and from a population of approximately 100,000 problems only the worst 200 from each set are chosen for study. These problems have an initial LR duality gap as high as 40%. A second hybrid method is developed, using values for the unused time resource and the lower bound values computed by Dijkstra’s algorithm as part of the LR method. The computed values are then used to position multiple constraining meridians in order to allow LR to find better solutions. / This second hybrid method is able to produce solutions that are generally within 0.1% of optimal, with computation times that are on average 2 times the initial Lagrange Relaxation time, and in the worst case only about 5 times higher. The best method for solving the Constrained Shortest Path Problem reported in the literature thus far is the LRE-A method of Carlyle et al. (2007), which uses Lagrange Relaxation for preprocessing followed by a bounded search using aggregate constraints. We replace Lagrange Relaxation with the second hybrid method and show that optimal solutions are produced for both network problems with computation times that are between one and two orders of magnitude faster than LRE-A. In addition, these hybrid methods combined with the bounded search are up to 2 orders of magnitude faster than the commercial CPlex package using a straightforward MILP formulation of the problem. Finally, the second hybrid method is used as a preprocessing step on both network problems, prior to running CPlex. This preprocessing reduces the network size sufficiently to allow CPlex to solve all cases to optimality up to 3 orders of magnitude faster than without this preprocessing, and up to an order of magnitude faster than using Lagrange Relaxation for preprocessing. Chapter 1 provides a review of the thesis and some terminology used. Chapter 2 reviews previous approaches to the CSPP, in particular the two current best methods. Chapter 3 applies Lagrange Relaxation to the Submarine Transit Path problem with 2 speeds, to provide a baseline for comparison. The problem is reduced to a single speed, which demonstrates the large duality gap problem possible with Lagrange Relaxation, and the first hybrid method is introduced. / Chapter 4 examines a grid network problem using randomly generated edge costs and weights, and introduces the second hybrid method. Chapter 5 then applies the second hybrid method to both network problems as a preprocessing step, using both CPlex and a bounded search method from the literature to solve to optimality. The conclusion of this thesis and directions for future work are discussed in Chapter 6.

Το πρόβλημα εύρεσης συντομότερων διαδρομών είναι ένα από τα πιο θεμελιώδη προβλήματα μονοκριτηριακής βελτιστοποίησης σε δίκτυα. Σε αυτό το πρόβλημα αναζητείται η συντομότερη διαδρομή μεταξύ δύο δεδομένων σημείων ελαχιστοποιώντας ένα κριτήριο κόστους. Σε πολλές εφαρμογές ωστόσο, μας ενδιαφέρουν περισσότερα από ένα κριτήρια προς βελτιστοποίηση. Για παράδειγμα, στην εύρεση διαδρομών σε ένα οδικό δίκτυο με διόδια, μας ενδιαφέρει εκτός από την διανυμένη απόσταση και η ελαχιστοποίηση του χρόνου και του κόστους. Παρόμοια παραδείγματα βρίσκουμε και στον χώρο των δικτύων τηλεπικοινωνιών, όπου εξετάζονται κριτήρια όπως η καθυστέρηση, η πιθανότητα λάθους, ο αριθμός συνδέσμων και άλλα. Σε αυτές τις περιπτώσεις η καλύτερη λύση δεν μπορεί να οριστεί με μονοσήμαντο τρόπο, και συνεπώς καταφεύγουμε σε αντισταθμίσεις μεταξύ των παραγόντων, που είναι γνωστές ως σύνολο λύσεων κατά Pareto. Παρόλο που για το πρόβλημα μονοκριτηριακής εύρεσης συντομότερων διαδρομών υπάρχουν πολλοί αποδοτικοί αλγόριθμοι για την επίλυση του προβλήματος, το αντίστοιχο πολυκριτηριακό πρόβλημα είναι πολύ πιο σύνθετο. Μέχρι τώρα, αυτό το πρόβλημα έχει αποδειχθεί ότι είναι NP-πλήρες. Επιπλέον, έχει αποδειχθεί ότι το πλήθος των λύσεων σε αυτό το πρόβλημα αυξάνεται εκθετικά σε σχέση με το μέγεθος της εισόδου. Υπάρχουν δύο βασικές προσεγγίσεις επίλυσης τέτοιων προβλημάτων, όπου εξετάζονται πολλαπλά κριτήρια. α) Η πρώτη μέθοδος βρίσκει προσεγγιστικές λύσης κατά έναν ορισμένο παράγοντα. Οι προσεγγιστικές μέθοδοι δεν βρίσκουν απαραίτητα ακριβείς λύσεις, αλλά είναι σχετικά γρήγορες και προσφέρουν εγγύηση για το ποσοστό απόκλισης από την βέλτιστη λύση. β) Η δεύτερη μέθοδος χρησιμοποιεί ευρετικές βελτιώσεις για να επιταχύνει τους ήδη υπάρχοντες αλγορίθμους. Τέτοιες τεχνικές βρίσκουν ακριβείς λύσεις, και το ζητούμενο είναι να επιτευχθεί μια πολύ καλή χρονική απόδοση. Στην παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία επικεντρωνόμαστε στην δεύτερη μέθοδο, υποκινούμενοι από την μεγάλη ζήτηση πρακτικών εφαρμογών για εύρεση αποτελεσματικής και ακριβούς λύσης του προβλήματος συντομότερων διαδρομών υπό πολλαπλά κριτήρια. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, στην εργασία αυτή παρουσιάζουμε ένα ενοποιημένο πλαίσιο για την αποδοτική επίλυση αυτών των προβλημάτων. Προτείνουμε νέες μεθόδους ή βελτιώσεις των υπαρχόντων. Υλοποιήσαμε τις μεθόδους που παρουσιάζουμε συνοδεύοντάς τις με μια εκτενή πειραματική μελέτη πάνω σε δίκτυα ευρείας κλίμακας. / We present new implementations of heuristic algorithms for the solution of the multiobjective shortest path problem, using a new graph structure specifically suited for large scale road networks. We enhance the heuristics with further optimizations and experimentally evaluate the performance of our enhanced implementation on real world road networks achieving 10 times better performance with respect to the best previous study.

Heterogeneity- and Risk-Aware Algorithms for Task Allocation To Mobile Agents

<p> In this thesis, we investigate and characterize policies for task allocation to teams of agents in settings with heterogeneity and risk. We first consider a scenario consisting of a set of heterogeneous mobile agents located at a base (or depot), and a set of tasks dispersed over a geographic area. The agents are partitioned into different types. The tasks are partitioned into specialized tasks that can only be done by agents of a certain type, and generic tasks that can be done by any agent. The distances between every pair of tasks are specified and satisfy the triangle inequality. Given this scenario, we address the problem of allocating these tasks among the available agents (subject to type compatibility constraints) while minimizing the maximum travel cost for any agent. We first look at the Heterogeneous Agent Cycle Problem (HACP) where agents start at a common base (or depot) and need to tour the set of tasks allocated to them before returning to the base. This problem is NP-hard, and we provide a 5-approximation algorithm. We then consider the Heterogeneous Agent Path Problem (HAPP) where agents can start from arbitrary locations and are not constrained to return to their start location. We consider two approaches to solve HAPP and provide a 15-approximation algorithm for HAPP.</p> <p> We then look at the effect of risk on path planning by considering a scenario where a mobile agent is required to collect measurements from a geographically dispersed set of sensors and return them to a base. The agent faces a risk of destruction while traversing the environment to reach the sensors and gets the reward for gathering a sensor measurement only if it successfully returns to base. We call this the Single Agent Risk Aware Task Execution (SARATE) problem. We characterize several properties of the optimal policy for the agent. We provide the optimal policy when the risk of destruction is sufficiently high and evaluate several heuristic policies via simulation. We then extend the analysis to multiple heterogeneous agents. We show that the scoring scheme is submodular when the risk is sufficiently high, and the greedy algorithm gives solutions that provide a utility that is guaranteed to be within 50% of the optimal utility. </p>
