A, B, C – U eller G? Vi får väl se! : Om bedömning och examination inom högre utbildning / A, B, C – Fail or Pass? We will see! : On assessment and examination in higher education

Lindström, Åsa January 2016 (has links)
This essay answers the research question; how do university teachers view assessment and examination in higher education. The aim is to identify teachers' attitudes to assessment and examination. The results aim to create conditions for the educational development of teachers at Linnaeus University and inspire new ways of looking at assessment and examination. The research review deals with overall perspectives on assessment and examination and its impact on higher education. Furthermore, the functions and culture of assessment and assessment of learning are outlined. University teachers’ attitudes on assessment and teaching in general are also considered. The method is a combination of questionnaires and interviews, thus both qualitative and quantitative method was used to collect data of both qualitative and quantitative in nature, which was analyzed with both qualitative and quantitative methods. Results and analysis show the relationship between the conditions, criteria for what is regarded as assessment and examination of good quality, and the development of the same. The empirical results also identify diverse attitudes to a variety of aspects related to assessment and examination, but also educational development in general. The importance of knowledge transfer is repeated where discussions and explanations between colleagues and students, in order to create meaning and development is required. Student involvement at various levels; from strategic development to practical implementation, is also significant.

Using Mezirow's Transformative Learning Theory to understand online instructors' construction of the virtual teaching experience

Dhilla, Sarah Jean 22 June 2016 (has links)
This qualitative study examines expert instructors’ lived experienced with online pedagogy in order to (1) understand how teaching in a virtual environment influences pedagogical style, academic identity and student-instructor interactions and (2) to explore how the virtual teaching experience evolves as faculty continue to teach online. None of the existing empirical research has focused on accomplished instructors’ online teaching experiences and, as a result, there is very little information concerning how to sustain faculty approval, retain skilled instructors, provide adequate online teaching support and maintain a successful online learning enterprise over time (Coppola, et al., 2002; Bolliger & Wasilik, 2009; Betts, 2014). Using a constructivist design, this study employed interviews and content analysis techniques to explore the following research questions: 1) What challenges do experienced online faculty face when they teach in the virtual learning environment? 2) What new challenges have emerged as a result of their continued online teaching experience? 3) How do experienced instructors approach and address these challenges? Thirty-one self-identified experienced online instructors from across the nation and a variety of institutions participated. Findings show that continued online teaching experience has a profound impact on the way instructors perceive their pedagogical practice, their place in the academy and their role in students’ online learning experiences. The online environment presents instructors with a multitude of challenges. These challenges are complex and involve pedagogical issues as well as philosophical dilemmas that force instructors to reconsider their assumptions about teaching, learning and authority in the classroom. Wrestling with these issues puts instructors in a vulnerable position as they search for pragmatic solutions and simultaneously renegotiate their long-held academic assumptions and beliefs. The practical and philosophical challenges instructors experience in regards to their developing digital pedagogical practice, their changing relationship with students, and their evolving online academic identity are discussed as well as findings related to vulnerability in the online environment. Implications for online faculty development, limitations and areas for improvement are also considered.

Faculty experiences facilitating study abroad

Dechert, Francis Edmond 08 August 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Faculty who teach at the college level are often responsible for their own pedagogical training and development, and leading a short-term study abroad program may be one strategy for helping faculty with this development. This study explores the experiences of faculty who have led short-term study abroad programs and provides insight into how the experiences align with experiential learning models and ways that they can lead to pedagogical development. Nine faculty members were interviewed and asked questions about their teaching backgrounds, their introduction to study abroad, and their experiences related to teaching and learning while abroad. The findings show that faculty have opportunities for learning while leading programs abroad and that the learning opportunities could spur pedagogical change and improvement. To ensure that faculty learn from their experiences, they should progress through a formal experiential learning process that requires them to reflect on and conceptualize their experiences and then plan to implement changes. A model for guiding faculty through this process is proposed. Recognizing and reflecting on experiences leading programs abroad has the potential to impact faculty teaching, and a formalized experiential learning process will ensure that faculty fully realize the benefits of these experiences through improvements in their teaching.

Pedagogy – The Missing Link in Religious Education: Implications of brain-based learning theory for the development of a pedagogical framework for religious education

White, Dan, res.cand@acu.edu.au January 2004 (has links)
Over the past three decades, the development of religious education in Australia has been largely shaped by catechetical and curriculum approaches to teaching and learning. To date, little emphasis has been placed on the pedagogical dimension of religious education. The purpose of this research project is to explore the manner in which ‘brain-based’ learning theory contributes to pedagogical development in primary religious education. The project utilises an action research methodology combining concept mapping, the application of ‘brain-based’ teaching strategies and focus group dialogue with diocesan Religious Education Coordinators (RECs). The insights derived contribute to the formulation and validation of an appropriate pedagogical model for primary religious education, entitled the ‘DEEP Framework’. The model reflects an integration of insights from brain-based theory with nuances from the contemporary Australian religious education literature. The project identifies four key, interactive principles that are crucial to pedagogical development in religious education, namely: Discernment, Enrichment, Engagement and Participation. It also recognises a fifth principle, ‘an orientation towards wholeness’, as significant in combining the various pedagogical principles into a coherent whole. The DEEP framework enables teachers to more successfully select and evaluate appropriate, interconnecting teaching strategies within the religious education classroom. The framework underpins the pedagogical rationale of the recently developed Archdiocese of Hobart religious education program and forms the basis for the implementation of a coherent professional development program across the Archdiocese.

Podpora začínajících učitelů a jejich rozvoj ve školské praxi a na příkladu vybrané školy / Support of natural science teachers who are starting their teaching career, and their development during the educational practice as shown also with the example of the selected school

Beran, Vít January 2015 (has links)
The ABSTRACT The Final Work named 'The support of natural science teachers who are starting their teaching career, and their development during the educational practice" as shown also with the example of the selected school, examines the way in which such school supports the fresh teachers, and whether for the fresh teachers at the selected school such support of their pedagogical development is beneficial, profitable and contributing to the teacher's development when compared with those schools which were addressed via a questionnaire designed for the headmasters and fresh teachers. The essay has been divided into its theoretical part and practical part. The theoretical part deals with the profession of a fresh teacher, the ways that support pedagogical development of these fresh teachers through the so called mentoring, pair teaching, professional portfolio, personal pedagogical development plans and alike. The methods of supporting fresh teachers have been described in general, and only then the Work aims also at the support implemented at the school selected. The practical part examines how the professional support has been provided for within the sample of primary schools and high schools, and this from the viewpoints of headmasters and fresh natural science teachers. It outlines the way of...
