The purpose of the Book of Numbers in relation to the rest of the Pentateuch and post-exilic Judaism

Sandys-Wunsch, John January 1961 (has links)
A mosquito once landed in a nudist colony. "How very excellent," he was heard to remark, "But just where do I begin?" This is the dilemma faced by any critic dealing with tne Pentateuch. If he examines the whole, then he is open to the charge that he has carried his conclusions about one book over into his consideration of the others. On the other hand, when he treats one book by itself, he is always in danger of a certain off-balance. This thesis falls into the letter class of investigation; it is therefore admitted that there are a certain number of loose ends, although every attempt will be made to see <u>Numbers</u> in the context of the Pentateuch as a whole. Nonetheless it is apparent that it is legitimate to consider a book of the Pentateuch by itself. For example, <u>Genesis</u>, although written as part of a series in its present form, can be dealt with as a book having meaning in itself. The theory that the present division of the Pentateuch into five books is a result of a mechanical process after the work was completed is not axiomatic. To the contrary it will be argued that the <u>Book of Numbers</u> is a book in the same sense that Genesis is a book, namely a part of a series, but with a specific theme and purpose of its own.

‘n Wetenskaplike verstaan van Eckart Otto se Pentateugteorie (Afrikaans)

Immelman, Erik Christo 26 July 2013 (has links)
Where precisely should the study of the Pentateuch start? This study in unison with the insight of the Pentateuch scholar Eckart Otto starts at Deuternonomy. Africa has a long and rich history of Biblical scholarship.A critical discourse of the Pentateuch has been kindled in South-Africa for more than the past decade through ProPent, the project for the study of the Pentateuch. This study is done in the space that was created with the Pentateuch theory that emerged out of this global encounter. Deuternonomy is the cradle of the Pentateuch and has its origin in the loyalty oath of Esarhaddon in the seventh century B.C. This oath was subversively recepted through a political theology during the reign of the Assirian Empire. The Middle Assirian Law codes, the Covenart Code and the Decalog were all used in creating Deuteronomany 12-26. It is in exile, that a sequence of redactions started which continued post-exilic when the Priestly Code of the Levites was merged with the Zadokite theology of Deuternonomy in Jerusalem. This study takes a closer look at the spy stories in Numbers, Joshua and especially Deuternonomy 1:19-46. The point is made that it is authentically these stories that wove the Pentateuch into the crown jewel of the First Testament and the Bible. With the various redactions that took place these stories create a close knit plot for the Pentateuch. This resulted in a space being created where different theologies can co-exist and fruitfully entice the people of Jahwe to trust and obey Him and to enjoy the blessing of the promised land. / Dissertation (MA(Theol))--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Old Testament Studies / unrestricted

"Die Vrees van die Here" in die Pentateug : 'n kritiese evaluering / Johannes Cornelius Jacobus Coetzee

Coetzee, Johannes Cornelius Jacobus January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to determine if research on the concept “the fear of the Lord” can lead to a better understanding of the message of the Pentateuch in different times and contexts. The study begins with a discussion regarding the shortcomings of studies done on “the fear of the Lord” in both Old Testament theology and the Pentateuch research. These studies are often dated or deal insufficiently with the problem. The place and function of the concept “the fear of the Lord” in the Pentateuch has not yet been determined. In chapter two a discussion follows on “the fear of the Lord” in relation to education and the retelling of “history”. The concept “the fear of the Lord” is compared with historical developments in biblical interpretation. This section of the study comes to the conclusion that “the fear of the Lord” emphasises the meaning the Scripture has for the reader and does not necessarily present an objective/rational reading thereof. Chapter three discusses the developments in semantics. The different words that can be translated with “fear” are discussed according to their semantic domains. This chapter also discusses the possible development of the concept “the fear of the Lord” within the Old Testament. The idea of the fear of the gods in Middle Eastern texts is also considered. Chapter four is a discussion of the composition of the Pentateuch. The history of its research is discussed and conclusions are drawn with regard to the different sources in the Pentateuch. This chapter comes to the conclusion that “ the fear of the Lord” is present in the Elohist, J material, Deuteronomist source as well as the Holiness code, but is absent from the Priestly material. Chapter five is an exegetical study of texts that contain references to fear directed towards God. Words translated with “fear” are discussed according to their semantic domains. The exegetical study also involves a study of other terms or subjects in the Pentateuch which are used in close relation to “the fear of the Lord”. The study concludes that research based on the concept “the fear of the Lord” and its function in the Pentateuch in its final form as well as its different sources, does indeed lead to a better understanding of the message of the Pentateuch in different times and contexts. / PhD (Biblical Studies/Theology), North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2014

Mojžíš podle Freuda: Postava Mojžíše ve spise Sigmunda Freuda "Muž Mojžíš a monoteistické náboženství" / Moses according to Freud: The Figure of Moses in Sigmud Freud's "Moses and Monotheism"

Polcer, Josef January 2016 (has links)
This paper discusses the perspective of Sigmund Freud on the figure of Moses. It seeks to understand the reasons for writing the book, thought paradigms, historical images, which were thought to author axis. A large part is dedicated to criticism of Freud's works, as well as psychoanalysis, which for him was a key area for understanding the history of the Jewish nation, which was constituted after a period of suppressed neuroses. Indispensable area is the multiplicity of areas of the human soul and the mentality of the Jewish community. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Nunes Junior, Edson Magalhães 06 December 2017 (has links)
The relationship between man and earth, is vital in every culture and in the Hebrew Bible.
