The material dimension of religion: a case study of selected Neo-Pentecostal churches in Woodstock, Cape TownPotgieter, Andre January 2013 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / The aim of the study was to establish why the sudden emergence of numerous storefront Neo-Pentecostal churches, in the suburb of Woodstock, Cape Town, were found to be attracting large numbers of members while mainstream churches were closing down or struggling to survive. Over and above the fact that the Neo-
Pentecostal churches are flourishing, the sheer number of them, was a further cause for investigation into this phenomenon. The majority of these congregations proved to have sub-Saharan ties (Nigerian in particular) and attracted membership largely of a similar background. This study looks at this phenomenon from a thorough understanding of the history of liturgy and particularly Pentecostal customs and attempts to place these churches in their social and historical context. The main thrust of this thesis, however, is an analysis of the distinctive and very prominent material features of these churches and their worship services which not only sets them apart from other Pentecostal and mainstream churches, but may offer an explanation of their popularity in this community. This study is undertaken through the close analysis of the worship services of seven Neo-Pentecostal churches in Woodstock and application of Ninian Smart's dimensions of religious practice, with specific reference to what he calls the Material Dimension. At least one worship service in each congregation was recorded on video and great sensitivity was exercised here in the physical recordings and in obtaining the written consent of the leaders of these respective congregations to use the data obtained.

A historico-theological study of Pentecostalism as a phenomenon within a South African communityPillay, Gerald J January 1985 (has links)
Preface: An attempt is made in this thesis to document the history of Pentecostalism among Indians in South Africa and to study and evaluate its religious character and main theological tenets. Obviously the peculiar socio-political situation of the Indians in South Africa has influenced the character of Indian Pentecostalism, which has in turn been able to address itself to the critical, cultural and religious disjunctions within this community. Hence an investigation of the dynamic tensions that obtain between crises in the Indian community and Pentecostalism will not only clarify the course of its history but will also explain its theological emphases. However, several studies on Pentecostalism in other communities have concentrated on the sociological dimension almost exclusively and many have even concluded that Pentecostalism is the spontaneous result of psychosocial; economic or cultural upheavals . This kind of reductionism has been largely the result of the uncritical use of 'functional-type' theories postulated by sociologists of religion. Indian Pentecostalism, while it has to be examined within the complex context of the South African community, cannot as we shall show, be adequately explained by any of the prevailing 'functional-type' theories because these theories reduce religion to a sociological function. Since the functional theory has the effect of limiting the perspective on religion to such an extent that the basis of religion, that is, the relation between the individual and faith, is either belittled or ignored, it has been jettisoned in this thesis for an approach free of any deliberately formulated 'theoretical framework'. However, it is necessary to critically examine some of the more popular 'functional-type' theories and the way they have been applied to the study of the Pentecostal movement here and elsewhere, so that by exposing the shortcomings of their application and the contradictions inherent in their assumptions, the approach adopted in this thesis could be clarified.

"The street of Brothers": a ethnography in prison.Eliakim Lucena de Andrade 12 August 2014 (has links)
The effort undertaken in this work had as main objective to analyze the Pentecostal religious presence within a prison institution. Its intent was to think how is an
encounter between Pentecostal religious practices and daily life in prison from the point of view of the inmates who are religious and inmates who are not religious. We also sought to understand what consequences this meeting causes in terms of behavioral change and building a new prison reality. The field experiments chosen to guide this discussion was the Casa de PrivaÃÃo ProvisÃria de Liberdade Professor Clodoaldo Pinto (CPPL II), more specifically, the Experience A, also known as The A Street or "The Street of brothers." There "the brothers of the work" develop activities of Projeto Renascer. The CPPL II is presented through a careful description of the physical space and everyday ways-to-do of the inmates. In addition, the webs of relationships woven between the prisoners who makes part of "the work" and who are incarcerated in The A Street is analyzed in detail. Finally, I demonstrate how the prisoners of CPPL II demarcate its rules of proceeding from the native category "vacilo" and classify the subject that "vacila" (ie, who violates the rules) as "vacilÃo". Each of the "vacilos" is associated with possible sanctions, which consists basically of "vacilo de morte" and "vacilo de 1000Â". The specificity of the A Street, related to the prisons and the rest of the Streets of CPPL II, is in the action of the inmates of the Projeto Renascer as conflict mediators.

Prosperity and the worship of achievement : a theological analysis of cultural tensions within Brazilian NeopentecostalismLeite Guanaes de Miranda, Daniel January 2015 (has links)
Neopentecostalism is currently one of the most expressive religious phenomena in Brazil. According to the Brazilian Census Institute's database (IBGE), Neopentecostals represent the fastest growing movement among Protestants in the country. Brazilian Neopentecostalism has some unique aspects that distinguish its member churches from the mainline denominations. Since its birth, the most significant difference has been its commitment to Prosperity Theology. Lately, however, a new constituency has developed within Neopentecostalism: the Brazilian Apostolic Movement. Like other Neopentecostal churches, they have the Prosperity Gospel as their theological grounding. On the other hand, however, they differ from other Neopentecostal churches by having an apostle as their leader. The aim of this work is to investigate the Brazilian Apostolic Movement in order to comprehend its culture and identity. The study will demonstrate that, believing that Christians should be healthy and wealthy, Brazilian Apostolic Movement leaders speak and preach in a way that resembles what psychoanalysis calls narcissism. Consciously or not, the movement risks contributing to the establishment of a Christian narcissistic culture – similar to the concept of cultural narcissism, developed by Christopher Lasch. That being the case, the study explores how Christian theology might respond to this reality. Is it possible for a Christian community to have narcissistic patterns as a key element of its identity? To respond to that question, I draw from the work of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. His book, The Cost of Discipleship, focuses particularly on Christian life and ethics, and approaches these issues by through the lens of an intense reflection on what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ – both as an individual and as part of a community. Drawing from Bonhoeffer's work, I suggest three concepts as a significant theological response and challenge to the narcissistic aspects identified in the BAM churches I studied: Cheap grace, theology of the cross, and uncertainty of life.
