LEXICAL KNOWLEDGE OF VERB-PARTICLE BY SAUDI ENGLISH LEARNERS

Verb-particle constructions are one of the most complex components of the English language. Understanding and producing such difficult constructs in a second language (L2) is a challenge for L2 learners of English. This research was based on the study by Blais and Gonnerman (2013). The purpose of the current study was to measure American and Saudi participants' sensitivity to the degree of semantic similarity between verb/verb-particle constructions. The survey of similarity ratings was administered to 107 American native English speakers and 67 Saudi English learners. The participants were asked to rate 78 items based on their knowledge of the semantic similarity between verb/verb-particle pairs. Results revealed two major findings; American native speakers and Saudi English learners did not behave consistently with the similarity rating task, and the results did not support the previous categorizations of 78 items that established by Blais and Gonnerman. Extrapolating from these findings, it appears that similarity judgments of verb/verb-particle pairs may be sample-specific, even among native speakers. Therefore, it is questionable whether Blais and Gonnerman's instrument can be used to reliably compare the judgments of different samples of native and non-native speakers.

Svenska partikelverb med "in", "ut", "upp" och "ner" : En semantisk studie ur kognitivt perspektiv = Swedish phrasal verbs with in, ut, upp and ner : a semantic study from a cognitive perspective

I avhandlingen analyseras betydelsen hos partiklarna "in", "ut", "upp" och "ner" då dessa fungerar som verbpartiklar och tillsammans med verbet bildar partikelverb. Analysen omfattar såväl semantiskt regelbundna som lexikaliserade partikelverb och söker finna förklaringar till partiklarnas polysemi. Undersökningen är korpusbaserad och materialet består av nästan 900 olika partikelverb representerade med över 5 100 belägg. Beskrivnings¬modellen bygger huvudsakligen på den kognitiva semantiken. Verbpartiklarna analyseras i olika kontexter i såväl det fysiska rummets domän som i andra domäner varvid utgångspunkten för analysen alltid är partiklarnas prototypiska (spatiala) betydelse. Undersökningen visar att verbpartiklarnas olika, till synes disparata, betydelser är motiverade av föreställningsscheman (VERTICAL AXIS schema) och deras transformationer (vertikal axel  horisontell axel), samt av metonymier (DELEN FÖR HELHETEN) och metaforer (CENTRUM IS UP). Partiklarnas betydelser är länkade till varandra genom familjelikhet och bildar ett nätverk. Partikelverb bildade med in, ut, upp och ner uppvisar vanligen en avgränsad aktionsart, men verbpartiklarna har i de allra flesta en mer specifik betydelse än enbart den perfektiva. Verbpartiklarna upp och in betecknar i regel riktningen mot centrum och har ofta positiva konnotationer medan verbpartiklarna ut och ner denoterar rörelsen mot periferin och snarare har negativa konnotationer. Den vertikala orienteringen tycks dominera svenskans strukturering av det fysiska rummets domän; en rörelse i förhållande till en vertikalt orienterad behållare (behållare utan tak) beskrivs med de vertikala partiklarna upp/ner och inte med behållarpartiklarna in/ut. I vissa få speciella kontexter kan de undersökta partiklarna signalera talarens perspektiv.

Víceslovná slovesa v mluvě rodilých a nerodilých mluvčích angličtiny. / Multi-word verbs in speech of native and non-native speakers of English.

The present thesis is concerned with the topic of multi-word verbs (MWV) use in the speech of native and non-native (Czech) speakers of English. More precisely, it aims to give a quantitative as well as qualitative analysis of the use of three main MWV categories: phrasal verbs (PhV), prepositional verbs (PrV) and phrasal-prepositional verbs (PPV). In addition, it summarizes the main research areas in the field of MWV, one of them being the avoidance of MWV by non-native speakers of English, which has been an inspiration for conducting this study. The material comes from two spoken corpora: LINDSEI_CZ corpus of Czech speakers and its referential LOCNEC corpus of English native speakers. The analysis tries to disprove or prove three hypotheses, i.e. non-native speakers' usage of MWV is lower than that of native speakers, prepositional verbs are the favoured MWV by non-native speakers, and non-native speakers overuse certain MWV. The results show that the biggest difference is in the use of PhV as the non-native speakers use significantly fewer PhV than the native speakers; their usage of phrasal-prepositional verbs and especially prepositional verbs is rather comparable to native speakers.
