The use of diffraction peak profile analysis in studying the plastic deformation of metals

Simm, Thomas January 2013 (has links)
Analysis of the shapes of diffraction peak profiles (DPPA) is a widely used method for characterising the microstructure of crystalline materials. The DPPA method can be used to determine details about a sample that include, the micro-strain, crystal size or dislocation cell size, dislocation density and arrangement, quantity of planar faults and dislocation slip system population. The main aim of this thesis is to evaluate the use of DPPA in studying the deformation of metals. The alloys studied are uni-axially deformed samples of nickel alloy, nickel-200, 304 and 316 stainless steel alloys and titanium alloys, Ti-6Al-4V and grade 2 CP-titanium.A number of DPPA methods were applied to these metals: a full-width method; a method that attributes size and strain broadening to the Lorentzian and Gaussian integral breadth of a Voigt; different forms of the variance method; the Williamson-Hall method; the alternative method; and variations of the Warren-Averbach method. It is found that in general the parameters calculated using the different methods qualitatively agree with the expectations and differences in the deformation of the different metals. For example, the dislocation density values found for all metals, are approximately the same as would be expected from TEM results on similar alloys. However, the meaning of the results are ambiguous, which makes it difficult to use them to characterise a metal. The most useful value that can be used to describe the state of a metal is the full-width. For a more detailed analysis the Warren-Averbach method in a particular form, the log format fitted to individual Fourier coefficients, is the most useful method. It was found that the shape of different diffraction peaks change in different texture components. These changes were found to be different for the different metals. A method to calculate the shape of diffraction peaks, in different texture components, using a polycrystal plasticity models was investigated. It was found that for FCC metals, the use of a Taylor model was able to qualitatively predict the changes in the shape of diffraction peaks, measured in different texture components. Whereas, for titanium alloys, a model which used the Schmid factor was able to qualitatively explain the changes. The differences in the FCC alloys was attributed to being due to differences in the stacking fault energy of the alloys. For nickel, which develops a heterogeneous cell structure, an additional term describing changes in the crystal size in different orientations is required. The differences between the titanium alloys were shown to be due the presence of twinning in CP-titanium and not in Ti-6Al-4V. This difference was thought to cause an additional broadening due to variations in intergranular strains in twinned and non-twinned regions. The use of polycrystal plasticity models, to explain the shape of diffraction peaks, raises questions as to the validity of some of the fundamental assumptions made in the use of most DPPA methods.

Effect of finite temperatures on the elementary mechanisms of plastic deformation in amorphous materials / Effet d'une faible température sur les mécanismes élémentaires de la déformation plastique dans les matériaux amorphes

Chattoraj, Joyjit 23 September 2011 (has links)
Using numerical simulations of a model two-dimensional Lennard-Jones glass, we study the effect of small temperatures on the elementary mechanisms of deformation in amorphous materials. A very extensive data set covering several decades of shear rate at various temperatures below and up to the glass transition was compiled. Measurements, which include transverse diffusion, macroscopic stress, and coarse-grained fields (strain, stress) and their spatial correlations, lead us to propose that the avalanche dynamics previously identified in athermal simulations continues to be at work -- and nearly unchanged -- up to the glass transition. It is then argued that in this range, thermal fluctuation essentially shift the strains at which dissipative events take place, which results in a sharp drop of the macroscopic stress level at the lowest temperatures

The increase in cargo transported by axis has been a critical factor in reducing transportation costs, requiring more and more of the wheel-rail interaction. In this aspect to ensure the safety of transported goods and the a reduction in the wear of the railwheel is necessary to develop new steels with higher hardness without loosing ductility. One strategy is to add small amounts of alloy elements (<0.5 wt%) of niobium or vanadium which in solid solution in austenite retards the diffusional decomposition and raise the mechanical strength of the steels. The object of this study was to evaluate two steels with 0.7 % C microalloyed or not with niobium-molybdenum, which were produced by MWL Brasil for the production of railway wheels, according to Class D of AAR (Association of American Railroads) standards. Dilatometric tests were carried out to evaluate the isothermal transformation of microalloyed or not steels, and the flow curves were evaluated through microalloyed steels or not in a single hot compression tests. The addition of microalloying elements have delayed the kinetics of austenite transformation to pearlite in the order of 4 times and slightly increase the hardness of the reaction products in niobium and molybdenum microalloyed steel for isothermal transformations evaluated by dilatometry and increased in a ratio of 1.3 to 1.4 the peak stresses and 1.5 to 3 the peak strain for all ranges of temperature and strain analyzed for the microalloyed steel / Mestrado / Materiais e Processos de Fabricação / Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica

Statistics of dislocations at low temperature in pure metals with body centered cubic symmetry / Statistiques du glissement des dislocations à basse température dans les métaux de symétrie cubique centrée

Choudhury, Anshuman 11 December 2018 (has links)
In situ straining tests in high purity α-Fe thin-foils at low temperatures have demonstrated that crystalline defects, called dislocations, have a jerky type of motion made of intermittent long jumps of several nanometers. Such an observation is in conflict with the standard Peierls mechanism for plastic deformation in bcc crystals, where the screw dislocation jumps are limited by inter-reticular distances, i.e. of a few Angstroms. Employing atomic-scale simulations, we show that although the short jumps are initially more favorable, their realization requires the propagation of a kinked profile along the dislocation line which yields coherent atomic vibrations acting as traveling thermal spikes. Such local heat bursts favor the thermally assisted nucleation of new kinks in the wake of primary ones. The accumulation of new kinks leads to long dislocation jumps like those observed experimentally. Our study constitutes an important step toward predictive atomic-scale theory for materials deformation.

Mikrostruktura a mechanické vlastnosti hliníkových slitin po intenzivní plastické deformaci / Microstructure and mechanical properties of aluminium alloys prepared by severe plastic deformation

Bajer, Jan January 2015 (has links)
New technologies of components assembling in car and aircraft industries and requests on improved mechanical and corrosion properties of metallic materials in the packing industry activate the utilization of highly innovative and unconventional manufacturing processes. There are only a limited number of processing, that retain the original material thickness and in an appropriate manner modify material properties. These are different types of annealing, severe plastic deformation methods or combination of both. In recent years constrained groove pressing (CGP) was devoloped with this method the grain size can be reduced from tens of micrometers to sub-micrometers. The present work is focused on a study of evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties of two alloys based on EN AW 3003 after CGP deformation and subsequent annealing.

Title: Study of ultrafine-grained materials prepared with different methods of severe plastic deformation Author: RNDr. Tomáš Krajňák Department: Department of Physics of Materials, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University in Prague Supervisor: Doc. RNDr. Kristián Máthis, PhD., Department of Physics of Materials, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University in Prague Abstract: Interstitial free steel with ultrafine-grained (UFG) structure was prepared by high-pressure torsion (HPT). The development of the microstructure as a function of the number of HPT turns was studied at the centre, half-radius and periphery of the HPT-processed disks by X-ray line profile analysis (XLPA), positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) and electron microscopy. The dislocation densities and the dislocation cell sizes determined by XLPA were found to be in good agreement with those obtained by PAS. The evolution of the dislocation density, the dislocation cell and grain sizes, the vacancy cluster size, as well as the high-angle grain boundary (HAGB) fraction was determined as a function of the equivalent strain. It was found that first the dislocation density saturated, then the dislocation cell size reached its minimum value and finally the grain size got saturated. For very high strains after the...

Mikrostruktura a vlastnosti lehké slitiny AZ31 připravené plynulým odléváním mezi válce / Microstructure and mechanical properties of lightweight structural AZ31 alloy prepared by twin-roll casting method.

Zimina, Mariia January 2016 (has links)
Title: Microstructure and mechanical properties of lightweight structural AZ31 alloy prepared by twin-roll casting method Author: Mariia Zimina Abstract: Microstructure of AZ31 twin-roll cast magnesium alloy was studied using light optical, electron and atomic force microscopy. The effect of annealing temperature on the microstructure was tested. Mechanical properties of a thin magnesium strip were investigated by means of microhardness tests and tensile tests at a relatively low strain rate 10-3 s-1 . Results show that the ductility of the twin roll cast strip increases with increasing deformation temperature, however, a remarkable decrease was observed at about 200 řC. This effect appears also in a conventionally cast ingot of a master alloy and is caused by a change of a deformation mode occurring at this temperature. Moreover, the effect of severe plastic deformation on the microstructure and mechanical properties was studied. Equal channel angular pressing was applied on magnesium strip samples and lead to a significant grain refinement accompanied by an unfavorable strengthening of the initial basal texture, which is effectively suppressed by a subsequent annealing. A constrained groove pressing was for the first time successfully applied on AZ31 twin-roll cast strip leading to an increase of...
