The making of a poet : a scholarly edition of Ivor Gurney's poetry, 1907 to Armistice 1918

Ivor Gurney (1890-1937) was equally gifted as a poet and a composer. While a very small number of pieces of juvenilia survive, arising from his passion for and immersion in literature, he began to write poetry following his enlistment as a soldier in the First World War. In this thesis I have prepared an edition of all of Gurney’s poetry from its beginnings until the Armistice on 11 November 1918. The edition of over two hundred poems incorporates 59 poems and fragments that have not previously been published. I have sought to present this body of poetry in chronological order, and with extensive textual notes and commentary, to chart the development of poems through all stages of draft to fnal poem. This has been made possible by an unprecedented detailed analysis of all Gurney’s manuscripts and a wholesale reorganisation of that extensive collection.

Antonio Pistoia : the poetic world of a customs collector

The object of the present study is Antonio Pistoia (1436? - 1502), a jocular poet and customs collector who worked mainly in Northern Italy. Although his reputation as a notable literary figure has suffered from neglect in recent times, his work was appreciated by and known to his contemporaries including Pietro Aretino, Ludovico Ariosto, Matteo Bandello, Francesco Berni and Baldesar Castiglione. Research on his life and work came to a halt at the beginning of this century and since then he has failed to attract significant attention. The present study attempts to review and re-examine both the man and his work with a view to putting Antonio Pistoia back on the literary map. My thesis is based on the idea that a poet can be explored from various points of view and with different methodologies tailored to the objects under investigation. In the case of Pistoia a biographical history alone or an interpretation of his work alone would provide only partial results. By combining the two I have attempted to see how he and his work fitted within the cultural scene, the social and historical setting of Renaissance Italy in a period of political and military crisis. Based on archive work and on new textual material retrieved from a number of European libraries, this study challenges and tests widely held theories concerning both his biography and his literary production. By collecting fresh references and winnowing old ones, it throws new light on a series of specific issues from matters of identification relating to the poet's life, the critical fortune of his collection of sonnets, his play Panfila and other minor works, and to problems of uncertain authorship, including poems of undisputed, doubtful and arbitrary attribution; the final section is devoted to his Canzoniere, its composition and the tradition to which it belongs and a thematic and stylistic overview of his poems. A codicological analysis of the allegedly autograph manuscript and a listing of Pistoia's archival documents, manuscripts and early printed sources, completely assembled for the first time and comprehensive of additional new findings, conclude the study.

Investigations of the Temkin-Poet Model for Electron-Hydrogen Iso-Electronic Series Scattering

An important model in the study of electron-atom collisions was development by Temkin and Poet. Although the model has been used to test many theories and approximation methods, the novel method of solution used by Poet has not been developed further to any great extent. The Temkin-Poet model of electron scattering simplifies the three-body scattering problem by suppressing all angular dependence of the wavefunction. In this thesis we return to Poet's method and apply it to a range of calculations for the hydrogen-isoelectronic series. Firstly it is demonstrated that the method provides high-precision solutions for elastic and inelastic scattering. these solutions will then be used to investigate various aspects of electron scattering including the ionisation of hydrogen in the near-threshold region, resonant states in helium, and the scaling of elastic cross sections for a number of hydrogen-like ions.

The life and poetry of Dai Tian

The thesis studies the life and poetry of Dai Tian (1937-) as a Hong Kong poet. Hong Kong literature and poetry have seldom been studied by scholars in the West in past years. With the ending of British colonial rule and the handing over of the sovereignty of Hong Kong back to the Chinese on 1st July 1997, there is an urgency in the study of Hong Kong poetry to render overdue recognition to Hong Kong poets. Dai Tian was bom in China, raised in Mauritius, studied in Taiwan and the USA, and now lives in Hong Kong. In this thesis, I demonstrate that Hong Kong poetry exists and that Dai Tian is one of its foremost representatives. The thesis is in 5 chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the literary activities and development of Hong Kong from 1842-1997. A definition of Hong Kong poetry on the basis of themes will be given. The question of Hong Kong being a place of importance in poetry is raised. Chapter 2 is an account of the life of Dai Tian. Chapter 3 is the discussion of Dai Tian's poetry. Dai Tian's poetry is divided into 3 stages, the 1st stage is from 1957-1966, the 2nd stage from 1967-1980 and the stage from 1981-1990. Recurring themes like Chineseness, Chinese arts and artists, time and life, international politics, fables and cultural China are discussed. Chapter 4 is the study of Dai Tian as a Hong Kong poet. Dai Tian's poetry will be studied as representative of Hong Kong poets. The themes of anti-colonialism and Hong Kong as a periphery to Mainland China, Taiwan and the United Kingdom will be examined. Chapter 5 concludes the thesis and examines the friendship between Dai Tian and contemporary poets, Dai Tian's influence on Hong Kong poets and his plans for future writings.
