Theatricality and power : politics and "play-acting" in the European RenaissanceDiamond, Jeff Barja January 1992 (has links)
In and around the princely courts of Europe, Renaissance humanists drew upon the teachings of classical antiquity, often reinterpreting them to suit their own intellectual and ethical needs. One such need concerned balancing notions of achievement predicated upon gaining others' favor, with ideals of constancy and integrity. Evidence of this dilemma can be found in the works of Niccolo Machiavelli, Desiderius Erasmus, Thomas More, and Michel de Montaigne. In each of these cases, the attachment to differing conceptions of accomplishment and human dignity resulted in contradictions in their writings, and in their lives.

Political rationalityGoodin, Robert E. January 1974 (has links)
This thesis investigates the political scientific implications of the postulate that political actors behave as if they were Rational (i.e., Economic) Men. The basic aim of the theoretical discussion is to explain both the existence and substance of norms of social cooperation. Rational Men would cooperate under special circumstances constituting a "coordination problem." Depending on the details of the situation, they would organize their cooperative efforts through either social processes of mutual adjustment or political-legal processes. The substance of the code of political morality Rational Men would embrace combines an Aggregative Principle that total goods available to society as a whole be maximized and a distributive Works Principle that each individual should prosper according to his own works. The results of this theoretical analysis are subjected to two extended empirical tests. The first is whether the Rational Man code of political morality corresponds in essential respects to the norms of political morality as revealed by linguistic analysis. The second test utilizes both of the theoretical arguments to explain the politics of environmental protection. The Rational Man model can explain the fact of pollution, the demand for governmental intervention, the opposition of some men to such inter- vention, the details of environmental protection laws and the shape of the international dispute.

The effect of cognitive moral development on ethical attitudes, in the presence of reward consequences, under conditions of moral ambiguityQuan-Chai, Ryan 30 June 2014 (has links)
The objective of the study was to examine the effect of cognitive moral development on
ethical attitudes, in the presence of reward consequences, under conditions of moral
ambiguity. The study is based on business stakeholders under conditions of strategic
business competition. The intention of the study is to explore and understand the
predictors of ethical behaviour.
The participants of the experimental study were 2012/13 GIBS MBA business students
with real managerial experience. They were randomly assigned to different stakeholder
roles in a controlled business simulation game called the Execugame, with varying
treatments of reward consequences and a strategic competitor bluff.
The study sought to determine whether Reward Consequences (RC) will be a stronger
predictor of Attitude towards the Ethicality of Competitor Bluffing (ATECB) amongst
Stakeholder Role Players (SRPs) than their Level Cognitive Moral Development as a
predictor of Attitude towards the Ethicality of Competitor Bluffing (ATECB). Overall the
results didn’t find evidence to support the research hypotheses. Hence the research
failed to prove a relationship and did not find evidence to support a relationship. / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / lmgibs2014 / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / MBA / Unrestricted

The politics of amnesty /Le Fort, Olivia January 2005 (has links)
Since Antiquity, the granting of amnesty to past atrocities has played a prominent role in political transitions. However, the moralized discourse of human rights that has emerged after the end of the Second World War has called for prosecutions in such cases. This study shows that granting individual amnesties to those responsible for past atrocities, as opposed to their prosecution, is a critical element in paving the way towards homonoia---harmony or concord---in a community that has been affected by civil strife. After having explored the origins of amnesty in Ancient Athens and its similarities with the amnesties granted by early modern European peace treaties and the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the author argues that individual amnesty constitutes the only way of uncovering the truth about past atrocities. This is turn facilitates the forgiving of perpetrators and thus the achievement of homonoia. Moreover, individual amnesty, as mainly a political act, can nevertheless encompass considerations of justice, when the notion is not restricted merely to its punitive aspect.
