Betydelsen av god munvård på äldre personer / The importance off good mouth care in elderly people

Gustafsson, Anna January 2014 (has links)
Background: A good oral health play an important roll in older people´s quality of life andwellbeing. Oral health affects how the individual speaks and eats, it is also important for theindividual´s self-esteem. It is therefore important that the caregivers involve a good oralhealth in nursing practice for elderly. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe theconsequences of a poor oral health in elderly people to increase knowledge among nursesand other health professionals Method: This study was a literature based study, in witchnine quantitative articles was analyzed. Results: The analysis of the articles resulted in across-cutting theme and three categories. The overarching theme is: The risks of poor oralhealth. The three categories are: The risk of malnutrition, the risk of suffering fromcardiovascular disease and the risk of respiratory illness. The results show that poor oralhealth that leads to periodontal disease increases the risks of developing complications suchas cardiovascular disease or pneumonia. Conclusion: An improved and expandedinformation and education to personnel treating the elderly is necessary so that theknowledge about good dental care is improved. It also requires more research in this area, since oral health is an important part of human well-being.

Factors that Lead to Poor Oral Health in Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Bains, Jaskiran Kaur 01 January 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Maintaining dental health is vital as it contributes to the psychological well-being of an individual and the overall systemic health through preventing chronic diseases. Unfortunately, poor oral health has been identified as a common trend in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). There is limited research regarding the barriers that result in rates of increased dental manifestations in patients with ASD compared to neurotypical individuals. This study strived to identify the barriers that contribute to poor oral health in individuals with ASD in order to establish interventions to break those barriers and improve overall dental health in the Autism community. A descriptive, mixed methods study design was utilized that included 10 participants: adults with ASD (n=4), parents of children with ASD (n=4) and dental professionals (n=2). The ASD population were asked to complete a questionnaire that asked about home/office dental care, dental issues and anxiety, sensitivity to external stimuli in a dental office, physical challenges and parafunctional habits. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with dental professionals regarding their experience and training in treating patients on the Autism Spectrum. Three of the four parents reported that their child had high levels of anxiety regarding dental visits. Only one adult with ASD reported flossing on a regular basis, and bruxism was reported by all adults with ASD and all but one parent as an area of concern. Interviews with the two dentists revealed that families of individuals with ASD face financial barriers and reported infrequent visits from adults with ASD. Additionally, both dentists received minimal training in working with special populations. Further research is needed to improve the frequency of dental visits in adults with ASD, which can lead to an overall increased quality of life. Additionally, more training and guidance should be provided to dental offices on working with patients with ASD.

Oral Health Literacy and Oral Hygiene Habits in a Kentucky Appalachian Community

Schill, Katie D. 01 January 2019 (has links)
This study sought to identify the level of oral health literacy held by people who live in transitional and distressed Kentucky Appalachian areas and if this effects how often they are using oral hygiene techniques. Data were also collected to describe the attitudes Kentucky Appalachian adults hold toward oral hygiene and oral health status. Current documentation shows that poor oral health remains a public health threat in this population despite efforts such as school-based sealant programs and increased dental insurance coverage. This study followed a quantitative design and 99 participants were polled using a survey specifically developed for this study's use. Composite median scores and Spearman's correlation values established the existence of a low oral health literacy level across the participant pool, an also documented that oral hygiene techniques are not used in frequencies recommended for proper oral health. A poor self-efficacy towards the ability to utilize these techniques properly was also identified. Using the Mann-Whitney U test, responses were compared based on county designation and few significant differences were found. These findings show that oral health status and related beliefs are similar across the region and not just isolated to the economically poorest areas as the currently available literature suggests. Applying the health belief model it is predicted that Kentucky Appalachians are unlikely to adopt proper oral hygiene habits until their self-efficacy is improved. A recommendation of this study is that public health officials should promote personal control when designing public health programs geared towards improving the oral health status of this population. To do so would introduce a positive social change in that people with good oral health are less likely to experience the pain, malnutrition, and negative social stigma that is associated with poor oral health.
