Wilson Harris a jeho mýtická vize v The Guyana Quartet / Wilson Harris's Mythic Vision in The Guyana Quartet

Nguyen, Mai Chi January 2021 (has links)
This thesis engages with Wilson Harris's vision for the Caribbean in light of the processes of land settlement, appropriation, genocide and slave trafficking that have historically denied the region's population of human identity. Concerned primarily with Wilson Harris's first four published novels, Palace of the Peacock (1960), The Far Journey of Oudin (1961), The Whole Armour (1962), and The Secret Ladder (1963), which were then grouped together and republished as The Guyana Quartet (1985), the study of this quartet also focuses on Harris's critical essays, most notably "The Amerindian Legacy" (1990). Firstly, this thesis situates Wilson Harris within the context of postcolonial thought and Caribbean literature in the 20th century. Then, it focuses on the remnants of colonial conquest that appear continuously in Harris's four novels under the repeated motif of pursuit. By exploring the presence of Jungian thought in Harris's fictional writing and critical writing, as well as the immanent ontology of the Caribbean that underpins the author's vision, the thesis draws out Harris's response to the cycle of persecution that he believes to stagnate the Caribbean. Harris's mythopoetic revisioning of Caribbean identity in The Guyana Quartet proposes a form of rebirth that transforms the dialectic between...

Media a prostor: vliv koloniální minulosti na současné zpravodajství Francie a Británie / Media and Space: Influence of the Colonial Past on Cotemporary Media Coverage of France and Britain

Brádková, Hana January 2013 (has links)
This thesis examines the influence of the colonial past on contemporary media coverage of France and Britain. It focuses on selected colonies and the frequency of their references on two websites - Skynews.com and France24.fr. Thus the thesis tries to answer the question whether or not the colonial past is still a strong determinant which governs the media's priorities. Imperial history has always been very vivid in these countries, where vast colonial land was possessed. Consequently they must now deal with the impact of their incursions. A strong relationship with former colonies exists and still be seen through the media. In addition, the fact that news media still prefers those states to the information about different former colonies, proves the existence of very strong bonds after the end of decolonial processes. The thesis is divided into two main sections. The first section considers the theoretical frame of analyzed notions (e.g. the geography of communication, colonialism or postcolonialism etc.), colonial history and pursuits the basic facts from media studies. Subsequently, the second section focuses on research results, whereby the principal aim is to confirm the assumption that British and French media prefers to inform more about their own former colonies than colonies of the second great...

Beličáková, Viktória January 2019 (has links)
Viktória Beličáková December 6, 2018 This thesis is aimed to study selected themes and approaches within Con- temporary Roma Art, and at the same time investigate possibilities of writing about this topic from the perspective of Art History. First part of this paper is focused on methodological foundations of presented work with emphasis on poststructuralism and postcolonialism. The objective of this part is to provide relevant analysis of traditional frames of Art History in order to pro- pose possible novel perspectives related to the topic of Contemporary Roma Art. Subsequently, the conclusions will be further developed and extended within the analysis of selected artworks from contemporary artists. The aim is to present three interrealted studies based on themes of time, space and body with the stress placed on artistic strategies using tactics of liminal- ity, ambivalence and other related approaches in order to deconstruct and reconstruct representations of Roma in art and other spheres.

Lusofonie jako minulost, přítomnost a budoucnost / Lusophony Past, Present and Future

Sivčáková, Michaela January 2020 (has links)
This thesis will take a closer look at the relatively new and multifaceted concept of Lusophony. It begins with a brief introduction to Portuguese colonial history and postcolonial development with a focus on the connection between Portuguese national identity, the colonial empire and today's Lusophone world. Subsequently, this thesis will present various conceptions of the colonial empire and the panorama of the transformations of colonial and anti-colonialist narratives through which Portuguese colonization and decolonization were justified. Among other things, this thesis aims to explore the topic of Lusophony in historical contexts, to examine the circumstances of this idea's origin and its development in Portugal, and, finally, to present some conceptualizations in the current academic context. Lastly, the main problems that Lusophony struggles with in the postcolonial context will be considered, specifically its relationship with the colonial past(s). Key-words: Lusophony, Post-Colonialism, Portuguese speaking community, Identity, Lusophone culture, Portuguese language

Utopie, nebo ztracený ráj? Texty dánských imigrantů v Argentině a latinskoamerických imigrantů v Dánsku a jejich obrazy Dánska / Utopia, or Paradise Lost? The Texts of Danish Immigrants in Argentina and Latin American Immigrants in Denmark and Their Imgaes of Denmark

Vrbová, Daniela January 2015 (has links)
Univerzita Karlova v Praze - Filozofická fakulta - Ústav germánských studií - germánské literatury Dissertation: Utopia, or Paradise Lost? The Texts of Danish Immigrants in Argentina and Latin American Immigrants in Denmark and Their Images of Denmark Daniela Vrbová 2015 Abstract The thesis explores the texts of Danish immigrants in Argentina in the period ca 1844-1990 and Latin American immigrants in Denmark in the period ca 1973-1990 and it follows particularly the conditions and the purposes of their creation. The texts are considered as representations of migration and exile literature in the body of Danish literature. Both groups of authors were producing the texts independently of one another. However, one can identify a joint effort to create or retain an active relationship to Denmark in all texts. This effort has an existential dimension, too, as one can view it as an act of (re)formulation of their personal identity in exile. The thesis then analyses the texts with a help of postcolonial reading in order to find images of Denmark that are being established in the text. Terms adopted from postcolonial studies (and partially also from New Historicism) about migration and migration literature are explained in a separate chapter. The hypothesis of this dissertation is a possible identification of...

Literarische Grenzüberschreitungen im "unheimlichen" deutsch-polnischen Raum

Wagner, Winfried 07 February 2018 (has links) (PDF)
