<p>There is seemingly a never-ending consumer demand for mobileterminals such as cellular phones and personal digitalassistants (PDAs). Each new generation of terminals comes withmore elaborate functions than in the previous generation. Thistrend results in a higher performance demand on the computerarchitecture that performs the required computations within theterminal. To satisfy the projected requirements on cominggenerations of mobile terminals, we propose an architecturethat when intelligently managed can provide the necessaryperformance at low power and energy consumption. Thisarchitecture, a chip-multiprocessor (CMP), thus amulti-processor implemented on a single chip, has incombination with adaptive scheduling strategies the potentialto efficiently fullfill future requirements.</p><p>This licentiate thesis spans over several studies done onthe effectiveness of the adaptive CMP. In our studies, we haveshown that an adaptive CMP can satisfy the same performancerequirements as a comparable uni-processor, still consumingless power and energy. Furthermore, we have made an effort toaccurately model the workload behaviour of mobile terminals,which is of paramount importance when comparing candidatearchitectures. In the future, apart from proposing moreadaptive scheduling techniques, we expect to do more thoroughstudies on workload modeling as well as on the operating systeminfluence on the overall performance and power consumption.</p>

Green networking : analyses of power consumption of real and complex IFFT/FFT used in Next-Generation Networks and optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing

The Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing is a promising technology for the Next Generation Networks. This technique was selected because of the flexibility for the various parameters, high spectral efficiency, and immunity to ISI. The OFDM technique suffers from significant digital signal processing, especially inside the Inverse/ Fast Fourier Transform IFFT/FFT. This part is used to perform the orthogonality/De-orthogonality between the subcarriers which the important part of the OFDM system. Therefore, it is important to understand the parameter effects on the increase or to decrease the FPGA power consumption for the IFFT/FFT. This thesis is focusing on the FPGA power consumption of the IFFT/FFT uses in the OFDM system. This research finds a various parameters effect on FPGA power of the IFFT/FFT. In addition, investigate the computer software used to measure and analyse the FPGA power consumption of OFDM transceivers, and selects the target hardware used in the computer software. The researched parameters include the number of bits used in calculating the phase factor precision; Cyclic Prefix length effected on IP core IFFT, Subcarrier modulation type, word length width, Real and Complex Value IFFT, IFFT length, and subcarriers sampling frequency. The real value IFFT is proposed in 1987 and implemented in this thesis. These parameters above are discussed by comparing the result between the Real and Complex value IFFT used inside the OFDM system.

Investigating Interference and Power Consumption for Ad Hoc Networks

IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol uses two techniques to avoid interference ¡V physical carrier sensing and RTS/CTS handshake (virtual carrier sensing). Ideally, these two techniques can solve most of interference problem. But in normal situation a host cannot receive packet successfully unless the power of receiving signal is much higher than that of interference signal. This fact leads that other host can interfere the reception in farther distance than the distance between the transmitter and the receiver. When the distance between the transmitter and the receiver is larger than certain value, some hosts that are out of the range covered by RTS/CTS packet may still interfere the receiver. This problem can be solved by using a very large physical carrier sensing range, which is limited by antenna and will reduce the network throughput. So it¡¦s not suitable to avoid large interference problem. So far some schemes were proposed to solve or improve this problem, but most of them cause power waste at the same time. In this thesis, we will propose a scheme to look after both interference and power consumption. Simulation results verify that our scheme can solve most interference caused by large interference range with less power consumption.

Energy Consumption Studies for 3G Traffic Consolidation on Android using WiFi and Bluetooth

Mobile phones have evolved from being devices just to make phone calls to become smartphones with added capabilities like surfing the network. Wireless communication has played a very important role in the evolution of smartphones. The work in this thesis aims to study the potential to reduce the energy consumption of the 3G communications by using a hybrid architecture. An idea first presented in the paper by Vergara and Nadjm-Tehrani [1]. This architecture consists of a group of nodes that communicate using WiFi or Bluetooth to forward their traffic using one node's 3G interface. In this thesis the named energy sharing scheme is implemented on Android mobile devices and experiments have been performed using a number of realistic traces to assess achievable gains and the energy footprint of the scheme itself. Even though communication technologies, screen features, multimedia capabilities, or processing power have been taken to the highest level, phones' batteries have not improved at the same speed. Nowadays battery lifetime has become a major issue with respect to cellular communication. With 3G communications Internet connection anytime and anywhere is provided to the terminals but this technology is optimized for peak performance whereas in underutilization it wastes a lot of energy. This makes it a big black hole from power consumption point of view when transmitting small amounts of data.
