Optimal Location of Distributed Generation to Reduce Loss in Radial Distribution Networks

Power losses are always a cause of worry for any power grid. In India, the situation is even worse. Though recent reports by Ministry of Power shows that Aggregate Technical and Commercial losses (AT &C losses) have come down from 36.64% in 2002-03 to 27% in 2011-12, yet they are much higher than the losses seen in many of the developed nations. The reduction shown in power loss is because of the Electricity Act, 2003 and the amendments made to it in 2007 which controlled the commercial losses rather than the technical losses. According to Ministry of Power, technical losses (Transmission & Distribution losses or T&D losses) in India are reported to be 23.65% in 2011-12. However, according to the study done by EPRI, for systems deployed in developed countries, these losses are estimated to be in the range of 7-15.5%. T & D losses occur in four system components namely step-up transformers and high voltage transmission (0.5-1%), step down to in intermediate voltage, transmission and step down to sub transmission voltage level (1.5-3%), sub-transmission system and step down to low voltage for distribution (2-4.5%), and distribution lines (3-7%). 1% of power loss is approximately equivalent to annual loss of Rs 600 million for a single state. Hence, in a year, loss in distribution line alone causes approximate loss of Rs 1.8-4.2 billion per state. Understanding and reducing power losses in distribution lines which contribute nearly 50% of the total T&D losses assume significance and has formed the motivation for the work reported in the thesis. In recent years, the trend has been to encourage users to generate solar power predominantly at residential complexes and captive power plants at industrial complexes. It has been suggested in the literature that Distributed Generation (DG) can not only reduce the load demanded from the power grid but also the power loss. In this thesis, it has been shown that by the choice of proper size and location of DG, the power loss can be reduced substantially as compared to unplanned deployment of DGs. The objective of the thesis is to design strategy for location of distributed user generated power to maximize the reduction in power loss. The thesis begins with a study of distributed generation in primary distribution networks and proceeds to problem formulation, with the aim being to develop an algorithm that can find out the optimal locations for DG allocation in a network. A greedy approximation algorithm, named OPLODER (i.e. Optimal Locations for Distributed Energy Resources), is proposed for the same and its performance on a benchmark data set is observed, which is found to be satisfactory. The thesis then moves on to describe the actual data of 101,881 commercial, residential and industrial consumers of Bangalore metropolitan area. A loss model is discussed and is used to calculate the line losses in LV part of the grid and loss is estimated for the said actual data. The detailed analysis of the losses in the distribution network shows that in most cases the losses are correlated with the sanctioned load. However there are also some outliers indicating otherwise. The analysis concludes that the distributed generated sources need to be optimally located in order to benefit fully. Also presented thereafter is a study about the impact of electrical properties and the structure of the network on power loss. In the second part of the thesis, OPLODER was again used to process the BESCOM data of 101,881 consumers by modeling them to be connected in three topologies namely Bus (i.e. linear structure), Star (i.e. directly connected) and Hybrid (i.e. tree structure). In case of Bus topology, when DG capacity available is 5% of the demand in substation, OPLODER reduced the loss from 14.65% to 10.75%, from 11.63% to 7.71% and from 13.33% to 9.24% for IISc, Brindavan, and Gokula substations respectively. Similarly, for the same amount of DG in case of star topology, OPLODER reduced loss from 1.75% to 1.26%, from 3.39% to 2.59% and from 2.96% to 1.99% for IISc, Brindavan, and Gokula substations respectively. Thereafter, the available real world data is re-modeled as a tree-type structure which is closer to the real world distribution network and OPLODER is run on it. The results obtained are similar to those presented above and are highly encouraging. When applied to the three substations viz. IISc, Brindavan and Gokula, the power loss dips from 9.95% to 7.42%, from 6.01% to 4.44% and from 8.07% to 5.95%, in case of DG used is 5% of the demand in substation. For the optimal strategies worked out in the thesis, additional overheads will be present. These overheads are studied and it has been found that the present infrastructure and technologies will be sufficient to handle the smart distribution network and the optimal strategy for distributed sources.

The aim of this thesis is to design the water-cooling system for a synchronous motor with an output of 10kW. The power loss was analytically determinated. For the initial water-cooling system and for two design proposals, thermal models were calculated in Ansys. The same boundary conditions were set for all three models. Then the analysis results of the temperature distribution on the machine surface and in the slots were compared. The comparison also includes the economical cost of the production and service of the machine. Then the production documentation was created, consisting of the assembly drawings and a simplified technological process.

This thesis deals with the problem of the high-speed induction machines. In the introduction the design of the machines and problem areas are discussed. The feeding from the frequency converter and the mechanical strength of the rotor appear to be the biggest problem. High-speed engines with solid rotors were designed. The first model is equipped with a conductive cooper layer on the surface. This model is exposed to harmonic and non-harmonic input voltage and then the results of the simulations are compared. The following model of the thesis is equipped with axial slots. In the practical part of the thesis no load measurement is taken. One point was measured at nominal frequency. At the end of the thesis the results of the measurements are compared with the results of the figures extracted from Maxwell software.

This thesis analyzes the power losses in induction machines and how the losses depend on the harmonic content of the applied voltages. Two cases are compared, one case where a machine is fed with a sinusoidial voltage and one case with a modular multilevel converter (M2C). The sine is representing an ideal grid while the M2C represents a case with harmonic content. The usage of converters for electrical drive systems is increasing due to advantages when the rotor speed could be variable by changing the frequency of the voltage. This is usually increasing the efficiency of the overall system, but is also adding harmonics fed to the machine and switching losses in the converter. Low switching losses in the inverter usually create higher harmonic content that instead increases the losses of the machine. The M2C is then proposed as a converter topology that can keep the harmonic content low while keeping the switching losses relatively low. This study focuses on the iron losses, the part of the total losses that is most hard to predict or measure. Today’s methods used to calculate the iron losses are often rough approximations that do not take the impact of the harmonic content of voltage into consideration, even though the iron losses are dependent on the harmonics. Experimental results in the study show that the losses of a M2C-fed case do not differ much from a sine-fed case. The difference could be explained by low increase of iron losses caused by the small harmonic content from the M2C. The increase of iron losses was linked to the harmonic content of the voltage. / Detta examensarbete analyserar effektförluster i induktionsmaskiner och hur förlusterna beror på övertonsinnehållet i den matande spänningen. Två fall kommer att jämföras, ett fall där en maskin är matad från en sinus spänning och ett fall med en modulär multinivå omvandlare (M2C). Sinusen representerar ett idealt nät medan M2C representerar ett fall med övertonsinnehåll. Användning av omvandlare för elekriska drivsystem ökar på grund av fördelarna när rotorhastighet kan varieras genom att ändra frekvensen från den matande växelriktaren. Detta ökar vanligtvis verkningsgraden på det sammanlagda systemet, men detta bidrar även med övertonsinnehåll matat till maskinen och switchförluster i omvandlaren. Låga switchförluster i omvandlaren medför oftast ett högt övertonsinnehåll som istället ökar förlusterna i maskinen. M2C är därför föreslaget som en teknik som håller övertonsinnehållet lågt medan switchförlusterna är relativt låga. Denna studie fokuserar på järnförluster, den del av de totala förlusterna som är som svårast att förutse eller mäta. De metoder som finns för att beräkna järnförlusterna är vanligtvis grova skattningar som inte tar hänsyn till inverkan från spänningens övertoninnehåll, även om järnförluster beror på övertonerna i stor utsträckning. Experimentella resultat i studien visar att förlusterna i ett M2C-matat fall inte avviker i stor utsträkning jämte ett sinusmatat fall. Skillnanen kan förklaras utifrån den lilla ökningen av järnförluster från det låga övertonsinnehållet från M2C:n. Järnförlusterna ses vara kopplade till övertonsinnehållet i spänningen.

Dans cette thèse nous présentons une étude des pertes de puissance en haute fréquence dans les rotors des machines synchrones à aimants permanent. Dans le cas des champs harmoniques temporels au rotor, nous avons montré par calcul éléments finis en 3D que la règle de segmentation des aimants présente une anomalie. Par conséquent, nous avons développé une étude sur l’efficacité de la segmentation à deux dimensions des aimants permanents, avec l’optimisation de la de segmentation des aimants afin de minimiser les pertes par courants de Foucault. Un simple critère est proposé mettant en évidence l’influence de l’effet de peau dans le calcul des pertes à haute fréquence. En deuxième lieu nous avons étudié les pertes rotoriques dues à la modification du champ fondamental par la denture statorique, Dans ce but nous avons proposé un modèle analytique représentant cette modification par un champ homogène dans une maquette 2D/3D. Ce modèle met en évidence l’influence des paramètres géométriques de la machine sur les pertes de puissance dans le rotor. Il était validé par calcul en éléments finis dans une couche mince. Le modèle analytique a donné les résultats acceptables en absence de l’effet de peau dans le cas des aimants longs. Par contre il reste à améliorer pour le calcul de pertes par denture dans les tôles du rotor. / In this thesis we present a study of high frequency rotor power losses in permanent magnet synchronous machines. In case of time harmonic fields we have shown by an analysis and confirmed by 3D finite element calculation an anomaly of the segmentation rule of the magnet. Consequently, we have proposed algorithms of optimization of the magnet segmentation aiming the minimization of eddy current losses, with a simple criterion on influence of the skin effect in losses calculation in high frequency. In the second part of the theses we have analyzed the rotor power losses dues to the stator slot harmonics. In case of homogeneous field we have proposed an analytical formulation taking into account machine’s geometrical parameters. We have then tested this model with aid of the finite element calculation. The analytical model gives acceptable results in absence of the skin effect in long magnets, but its application in laminated steels hasn’t proved successful.

On magnetic amplifiers in aircraft applications

<p>In the process of designing an electric power supply system for an aircraft, parameters like low weight and low losses are important. Reliability, robustness and low cost are other important factors. In the Saab Gripen aircraft, the design of the primary power supply of the electric flight control system was updated by exchanging a switching transistor regulator to a magnetic amplifier (magamp). By introducing a magamp design, weight was saved and a more reliable power supply system at a lower cost was achieved.</p><p> In this particular case, with the power supply of the electric flight control system in the Saab Gripen fighter, advantage could be taken of a specific permanent magnet generator (PM-generator). The frequency of the generator offered the perfect conditions for a magamp controller. A key parameter in designing magnetic amplifiers (magamps) is low losses. New amorphous alloys offer new possibilities of the technique in designing magnetic amplifiers, because of their extremely low losses.</p><p> The core losses are evaluated by studying the equations and diagrams specifying the power losses. The core losses are evaluated and compared with the copper losses in the process of optimizing low weight and low losses. For this an engineering tool is developed and demonstrated.</p><p> Evaluations of the hysteresis characteristics for the magnetic alloys, as well as modeling and simulation of the core losses, are presented in this work. The modeling of the core losses includes hysteresis losses, eddy current losses and excess losses as well as copper losses. The losses are studied dynamically during realistic operational conditions. The model can be used for any generic analysis of hysteresis in magnetic circuits. Applications of magnetic amplifiers in aircrafts have been demonstrated to be a feasible alternative</p>

Dans le cas des installations photovoltaïques, l’onduleur est le premier élément défaillant dont il est difficile d’anticiper la panne, et peu d’études ont été faites sur la fiabilité de ce type de convertisseur. L'objectif de cette thèse est de proposer des outils et méthodes en vue d'étudier le vieillissement des modules de puissance dans ce type d'application en se focalisant sur les phénomènes de dégradation liés à des aspects thermomécaniques. En règle générale, le vieillissement accéléré des modules de puissance est effectué dans des conditions aggravées de courant (Cyclage Actif) ou de température (Cyclage Passif) pour accélérer les processus de vieillissement. Malheureusement, en appliquant ce type de vieillissement accéléré, des mécanismes de défaillances qui ne se produisent pas dans la vraie application peuvent être observés et, inversement, d'autres mécanismes qui se produisent habituellement peuvent ne pas apparaître. La première partie de la thèse se focalise donc sur la mise en place d'une méthode de vieillissement accéléré des composants semi-conducteurs des onduleurs photovoltaïques. Cela est fait en s’appuyant sur l’analyse des profils de mission du courant efficace de sortie des onduleurs et de la température ambiante, extraits des centrales photovoltaïques situées au sud de la France sur plusieurs années. Ces profils sont utilisés pour étudier les dynamiques du courant photovoltaïque, et sont introduites dans des modèles numériques pour estimer les pertes et les variations de la température de jonction des semi-conducteurs utilisés dans les onduleurs, en utilisant l’algorithme de comptage de cycles "Rainflow". Cette méthode est ensuite mise en œuvre dans deux bancs expérimentaux. Dans le premier, les composants sous test sont des modules IGBT. Les composants sont mis en œuvre dans un banc de cyclage utilisant la méthode d'opposition et mettant en œuvre le profil de vieillissement défini précédemment. Un dispositif in-situ de suivi d'indicateurs de vieillissement (impédance thermique et résistance dynamique) est également proposé et évalué. Le deuxième banc est consacré à l'étude de modules de puissance à base de MOSFET SiC. Le vieillissement est effectué dans les mêmes conditions que pour les modules IGBT et de nombreux indicateurs électriques sont monitorés mais, cette fois ci, en extrayant les composants de l'onduleur de cyclage. Les résultats obtenus ont permis de déterminer des indicateurs de vieillissement d’IGBT et de MOSFET SiC utilisés dans un onduleur photovoltaïque / In the case of photovoltaic installations, the DC/AC inverter has the highest failure rate, and the anticipation of its breakdowns is still difficult, while few studies have been done on the reliability of this type of inverter. The aim of this PhD is to propose tools and methods to study the ageing of power modules in this type of application, by focusing on ageing phenomena related to thermo-mechanical aspects. As a general rule, the accelerated ageing of power modules is carried out under aggravated conditions of current (Active Cycling) or temperature (Passive Cycling) in order to accelerate the ageing process. Unfortunately, when applying this type of accelerated ageing tests, some failure mechanisms that do not occur in the real application could be observed, while inversely, other mechanisms that usually occur could not be recreated. The first part of the PhD focuses on the implementation of an accelerated ageing method of the semiconductor devices inside photovoltaic inverters. This is accomplished by analyzing the mission profiles of the inverter’s output current and ambient temperature, extracted over several years from photovoltaic power plants located in the south of France. These profiles are used to study photovoltaic current dynamics, and are introduced into numerical models to estimate losses and junction temperature variations of semiconductors used in inverters, using the cycle counting algorithm “Rainflow”. This method is then performed in two experimental test benches. In the first one, the devices under test are IGBT modules, where the accelerated ageing profile designed is implemented using the opposition method. Moreover, an in-situ setup for monitoring ageing indicators (thermal impedance and dynamic resistance) is also proposed and evaluated. The second bench is devoted to study the ageing of SiC MOSFET power modules. The accelerated ageing test is carried out under the same conditions as for the IGBT modules with more monitored electrical indicators, but this time by disconnecting the semiconductor devices from the inverter. The results obtained allowed to determine several potential ageing indicators of IGBTs and SiC MOSFETs used in a photovoltaic inverter

Etude de la performance énergetique d’une transmission de puissance haute vitesse / Study of the efficiency of a high-speed mechanical power transmission

Une des voies d’amélioration des véhicules hybrides et électriques est l’utilisation de moteurs tournant plus vite, jusqu’à plus de 42.000tr/min. Le but est d’augmenter la densité de puissance et le rendement des groupes motopropulseurs. Pour utiliser ces moteurs de nouveaux réducteurs mécaniques doivent être développés. Cela doit se faire sans générer de surcoût important face aux solutions utilisées à basse vitesse et en assurant un niveau de performance énergétique élevé. Cette thèse se situe en amont de la phase de conception d’un réducteur haute vitesse lubrifié par barbotage. Elle a pour but d’identifier les problèmes d’échauffement et de pertes de puissance ainsi que de proposer des pistes d’amélioration énergétique. Ce travaille propose la modélisation thermomécanique de l’étage grande vitesse (GV) du réducteur, réalisée à l’aide de la méthode des réseaux thermiques. Ce modèle couple les pertes de puissance avec les températures. Une attention particulière est portée sur la modélisation des roulements de l’arbre GV. Un nouveau modèle thermomécanique de roulement est développé. Les pertes par barbotage deviennent importantes à grande vitesse. Une méthode permettant de fortement les réduire est caractérisée. / A way to improve both electric and hybrid vehicles is to use high speed motors, operating over than 42.000rpm. The goal is to increase the power density and the efficiency of powertrains. Using these new motors, new gearboxes should be developed. This must be done without generating significant additional cost regarding already mastered low speed solutions. High energy performance level also has to be maintained. This PhD comes before the design phase of a high-speed oil bath lubricated gearbox. It aims to identify the warm-up and power loss problems, and propose ways to improve efficiency. This work proposes a thermomechanical modelling of the gearbox’s first stage, using the thermal network method. This model links power losses with temperatures. Particular attention is paid to high speed bearing modelling. A new thermomechanical model of rolling element bearing is developed. As churning losses being significant at high speeds, a method to greatly reduce this power loss is characterized.
