The Student Experience of Team During an "Interdisciplinary" Clinical Practicum

McDonald, Claudette 04 July 2012 (has links)
Changes to healthcare delivery models such as the promotion of an interdisciplinary team approach to patient care and increased hiring of unlicensed care providers have resulted in the need for knowledge about effective interdisciplinary teams. The purpose of this study was to describe student experiences in the development of team during an “interdisciplinary” clinical practicum. Participants were in first and third year of the Dalhousie baccalaureate nursing program, first year of the Nova Scotia Community College practical nursing diploma and at the end of the Nova Scotia Community College Continuing Care Assistant certificate program. Using a qualitative descriptive methodology, in-depth interviews were conducted with the eight participants to understand their experience of what made the team during an “Interdisciplinary” Collaborative Clinical Education Project (ICCEP) practicum. Thematic analysis revealed three themes; clinical instructor mentoring, peer attitudes of respect and acceptance, and mutual sharing of knowledge and skill.

Silver, Thays Fernanda Costa 09 May 2018 (has links)
The study opportunised knowledge and the degree of clinical students without the teaching teaching students in the practice of disciplina the semiology and semiotécnica. This is a qualitative classification research, in the form of a case study, carried out in a private higher education institution in the city of Maceió - AL. Ten students were interviewed, linked to a semi-translation. The interpretation of the data was performed based on the content analysis. The application of the data was possible as the difficulties and the eliminations during the validity while the first premises experience in the graduation and how these influence the control during the first turn. During this graduation stage, some conflicting feelings, such as fear, anguish, anxiety, euphoria, among others, accompany the student. The teacher needs to understand this moment as decisive for the learning teaching process to occur effectively. The analysis of the data allowed to identify through the students' perception that the semiology and semiotechnology discipline is essential for the course, since it allows the first contact with the practice of nursing and with the patient, besides allowing to improve the activities seen in theory through experience practice scenarios. The teacher is perceived as facilitator of the learning teaching process and the activities carried out in the practices scenarios as essential, for academic life and for the professional market. The research all owed the production of na ebook with the title: Laboratory of nursing practices – the teaching of procedures, techniques and nursing care. The main objective of this study is to present the practice environment of the nursing course of the Universiy Center Tiradentes - UNIT / AL, the academic community and especially to nursing under graduates. The practice laboratory is used for the purpose, among others, of enabling the student to develop skills in relation to the procedures that are necessary to practice in their first contact with the client. In this scenario it is possible to develop through the student experience, reflections and personal observations about the learning teaching process through the teaching of procedures, techniques and Nursing care, making possible the contact of the students who are study in gintroductory subjects with the reality of the simulation. The simulation in the Nursing laboratory diminishes the fear and the insecurity, facilitating the learning and emphasizing the importance of the previous contact of the student with procedures performed in mannequins to later render them to the client.

Caracteristics of the Course “Basics of Nursing Administration” for Practical Nursing Programs [master´s degree thesis] São Paulo (SP) School of Nursing at University of São Paulo; 2002 This exploratory study was based on course descriptions and aimed at identifying the competences and the topics addressed, as reported in the course description of “Basics of Nursing Administration” for Practical Nursing programs. Twenty-six practical nursing programs were studied. Most programs have been offered by private schools/institutions for 1 to 5 years. Twenty-one to thirty students attended these courses, offered in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings. Basics of nursing administration was offered in the beginning, middle or end of the program, depending on the institution, and lasted 25-50 hours. One or two teachers were in charge of both theory and clinical practice, which took place in hospitals, mainly in inpatient units. When both general and specific competences described in the programs were analyzed, the “know to do” competence (59%, 54%) and the “learn to know” competence (34%, 45%) prevailed against the “know to be” competence (7%, 1%). This shows that the “know to do” competence prevails in practical nursing programs. It also shows that the “learn to know” competence is necessary as a tool for developing the “know to do” competence. Findings for topics addressed in the programs, as reported in the course description, show that working processes are aimed at nursing assistance and at organizational structure. Thus, we believe that this study can contribute to those working in the field of professional nursing education as a tool to rethink professional competences required for practical nurses, according to the profile established, The study also encourages us to consider how practical nurses can effectly participate in the administrative processes, under the supervision of a registered nurse. Most Likely to Succeed: The Exploration of Factors Affecting Successful Completion of a Practical Nursing Program

Shoemake, Jennifer J. 01 January 2017 (has links)
In the realm of higher education, retention is a concept vital to the progression and security of all institutions. This remains true for all nursing programs as well because reports have shown an attrition rate as high as 50% in some nursing programs across the globe. Along with the nursing shortage projected in the next 20 years, retention in nursing programs poses a massive problem for not just higher education but healthcare as well. Therefore, it is important for nursing educators to understand the factors affecting student completion of a nursing program. This two-phase, mixed-methods study sought to answer the overarching research question: What factors contribute to completion of the Southcentral Community and Technical College (SKYCTC) Practical Nursing (PN) program within three semesters? Since the majority of nursing programs utilize a selective admission process for accepting students, the first phase of the study gathered admission criteria on six cohorts of students accepted into the SKYCTC PN program from August 2008 through May 2015. This quantitative data was analyzed to determine if any of the admission criteria were related to completion of the program. For the second phase, qualitative data was gathered through a focus group attended by 11 graduates of the SKYCTC PN program between August 2008 and May 2015. The purpose of the focus group was to gather environmental or academic influences that graduates attributed to their success in completing the program.

The analysis of knowledge construction in community based service-learning programmes for basic nursing education at two selected nursing schools in South Africa.

Mthembu, Sindisiwe Zamandosi. January 2011 (has links)
Community based service-learning is one of the fastest growing reforms in higher education, especially in the field of health care. The increased interest in this phenomenon is based on the demands by government and society that higher education institutions should be more responsive to the needs of the community. Literature, however, reflects that service learning lacks a sound theoretical base to guide teaching and learning due to limited research in this area. This study was, therefore, aimed at exploring the phenomenon knowledge construction in basic nursing programmes in selected South African nursing schools with the intention to generate a middle range theory that may be used to guide the process of knowledge construction in community-based service-learning programmes. This study adopted a qualitative approach and a grounded theory research design by Strauss and Corbin. Two university-based schools of nursing were purposively selected to participate in the study. There were a total number of 16 participants. The collection of data was intensified by the use of multiple sources of data (participant observation, documents analysis and in-depth structured interviews). The data analysis process entailed three phases; open, axial and selective coding. The results of the study revealed that the phenomenon “knowledge construction” is conceptualised as having specific core characteristics, which include the use of authentic health-related problems, academic coaching through scaffolding, academic discourse-dialogue and communities of learners. The findings showed that there are a number of antecedent conditions and contextual circumstances contributing to how knowledge is constructed in a community based service learning programme. The process of knowledge construction emerged as cyclical in nature, with students, facilitators and community members having specific roles to play in the process. A number of intervening variables were identified that had an influence on the expected outcomes on knowledge construction in community based service learning programmes. These findings led to the generation of a conceptual model. Knowledge construction according to this model takes place in an environment which is characterised by interactive learning, collaborative learning, actively learning and inquiry-based learning through continuous reflective learning processes. The main concepts in this conceptual model include concrete learning experiences, continuous reflection, problem posing, problem analysis, knowledge deconstruction and knowledge generation, knowledge verification, knowledge generation, testing of generated knowledge and evaluation of generated knowledge. The sub-concepts include learning through senses, an initial situation, health-related triggers, social interaction, reflection-in action, reflection-on action, hypotheses generation, conceptualisation of learning experiences, information validation and community interventions. Recommendations were categorised into education and training of academic staff, application of the model and further research with regard to quality assurance in CBSL programmes as well as the use of other research designs for similar studies. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2011.

Problems in integrating theory with practice in selected clinical nursing situations

Davhana-Maselesele, Mashudu 01 1900 (has links)
Text in English / The current changes in health care systems challenges knowledgeable, mature and independent practitioners to be able to integrate theoretical content with practice. The study aims to investigate the problems of integrating theory with practice in selected clinical nursing situations. The study focused on the rendering of family planning services to clients which is a component of Community Nursing Science. The findings of the study reveal that there is a need for an integrated holistic curriculum which will address the needs of the community. It was concluded that a problem-based and community-based curriculum, safe and patient-friendly clinical environments, intersectoral collaboration between college and hospital management and student involvement in all processes of teaching and learning will improve the integration of theory and practice. There also appears to be a need for tutors to be more involved in clinical teaching, accompaniment and the continuous evaluation of students. / Health Studies / M.A. (Nursing Science)

A description of the theoretical and practical experiences of critical care nursing students

De Swardt, Hester Cathrina 31 December 2004 (has links)
This qualitative study was aimed at exploring and describing the theoretical and practical experiences of second-year critical care nursing students. Purposive sampling was done, and unstructured interviews and narrative descriptions were used as data collection tools. An adaptation of Johns's Framework, the Guideline for the Facilitation of Reflection as Teaching Strategy, was used during interviews to guide participants in reflecting on theory-practice integration. Multiple strategies were used to ensure the trustworthiness of the study. Concerning patient data, communication, and the administration of life-saving medications, theory-practice integration did occur. Regarding treatment and the outcome of nursing interventions, it seemed that knowledge deficiencies and a lack of exposure to practical situations contributed to the inability to apply theory to practice. This apparent inability evoked negative feelings, such as guilt. Discrepancies between practice and theory taught led to confusion. Guided reflection assisted students in gaining a new perspective on nursing and theory-practice integration. / Health Studies / M.A. (Health Studies)
