A New Perspective on Giving-Up Density Experiments and the Landscape of Fear

Non-consumptive effects that predators have on prey are important to ecosystems. The perceived risk of predation can alter feeding behavior. Giving-up density (GUD) experiments have been a foundational method to evaluate perceived predation risk, but rely on the assumption that food preferences are absolute. However, nutritional preferences are context dependent and can change with risk. In my first chapter, I used spiders and grasshoppers to test the hypothesis that covariance in nutritional preferences and risk may confound the interpretation of GUD experiments. My results demonstrate that predation risk and nutritional preferences covary and can confound interpretation of GUD experiments. In my second chapter, I use a behavioral observation experiment to further explore non-consumptive effects, as well as the movement of prey in response to predation risk.

Orientador: Laurence Marianne Vincianne Culot / Resumo: A seleção de dormitórios pelos primatas pode ser influenciada por diversos fatores, como a predação, termorregulação e defesa de território. Nosso objetivo foi investigar quais desses fatores influenciam a seleção de dormitórios pelos micos-leões-pretos e se há divergência nas características dos dormitórios entre uma floresta contínua e um fragmento. Estudamos dois grupos de mico-leões-pretos, um numa floresta contínua e um num fragmento na região do Pontal do Paranapanema, São Paulo, Brasil. Nós coletamos os dados sobre as características físicas dos dormitórios e das árvores disponíveis no habitat. Usamos testes de Mann-Whitney para comparar as características físicas dos dormitórios com as árvores disponíveis e Funções de Seleção de Recursos (RSF) para entender quais dessas características são mais importantes na escolha dos dormitórios. Os micos-leões-pretos usaram árvores mais altas, com menor número de conexões de copas e com um alto grau de cobertura de copa para dormir, quando comparado às árvores disponíveis. Os dormitórios usados pelo grupo da floresta contínua eram maiores, com as primeiras ramificações inferiores mais altas e com menor número de conexão de copas do que os dormitórios usados pelo grupo do fragmento. (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Sleeping site selection by primates can be influenced by several factors, such as predation, thermoregulation and territorial defense. Our objective was to investigate which of these factors influence the sleeping site selection by black lion tamarins and if there is divergence in the characteristics of the sleeping sites between a continuous forest and a fragment. We studied two groups of black lion tamarins, one in a continuous forest and one in a small and isolated fragment in the Pontal do Paranapanema, São Paulo, Brazil. We collected data on the physical characteristics of the sleeping sites and available trees within the both habitats. We used Mann-Whitney tests to compare the physical characteristics of the sleeping sites with available trees and Resource Selection Functions (RSF) to understand which of these characteristics are most important in choosing the sleeping sites. Black lion tamarins used taller trees, with a fewer canopy connections, and a higher degree of canopy cover compared to the available trees. The sleeping sites used by the continuous forest group were larger, with the first lower ramifications higher and with fewer number of canopy connections than the sleeping sites used by the fragment group. Predator effects on behaviour and life-history of prey

<p>In this thesis I investigate predator-induced effects on behavioural and life-history characteristics of prey. At any moment a given predator is capable of attacking a small number of prey. However, the mere presence of a predator may impact a much larger number of individuals, as prey implement various behavioural and developmental mechanisms to reduce the risk of predation. It has become increasingly clear that predator induced responses have the potential to affect patterns of species abundance and distribution as well as individual fitness of prey. I study these responses by incorporating field surveys, semi-field experiments and laboratory experiments. All experiments were done in an aquatic environment using fish or large odonate larvae as predators and damselfly-or diving beetle larvae as prey.</p><p>My work highlights the importance of monitoring prey behaviour when studying life-history characteristics. I show that fish presence is an important factor for determining species abundance and distribution of odonates, and that prey behaviour may be a good predictor for fish vulnerability. Larval damselflies react behaviourally to predator presence by reducing activity and/or restricting habitat use. I confirm that such anti-predator responses have positive effects on prey survival in the presence of a predator but negative effects on growth and development of prey. In addition, my results suggest that the increase in per capita food resources for surviving prey following a predation episode (i.e. thinning) can have a stronger positive effect on prey growth and development than the negative effect of anti-predator responses. I also show that the strength of an anti-predator response is dependent on resource availability of the prey, with prey responding less strongly when resources are scarce. My results also indicate that the strength of the anti-predator response of damselfly larvae depends on predator diet and larval age. Predators feeding on prey conspecifics induce a stronger behavioural response in young larva than predators that feed on prey heterospecifics do. This diet-effect was not found in larvae late in ontogeny, due to an increased activity of larva where predators consumed damselflies. Such increased larval activity can be explained as a reaction to a time-constraint. Finally, I found that activity of damselfly larvae is genetically determined and that this has lead to a behavioural syndrome that might limit larval plasticity to a certain activity-range. This phenomenon may have implications for how well larvae are able to react to both biotic and abiotic changes in the environment.</p>

Effects of Habitat Quality on Behavioural Decisions and Population Dynamics in the Siberian Jay

The dynamics of natural populations may be influenced by a variety of factors, ranging from feeding interference and territoriality to the risk of predation and climatic effects. The relative influence of these factors may be contingent upon the quality of the habitat in which individuals reside. A factor that can largely affect population dynamics and that often covaries with habitat structure is predation risk. However, the combined effect of habitat and predation risk can vary according to the social context and intrinsic characteristics that affect individual behavioural responses. This thesis investigates the effects of habitat quality at the level of the population and the individual, and examines how it relates to the above factors in Siberian jays (Perisoreus infaustus), a territorial, group-living species in which the main cause of mortality is predation. The results demonstrate a strong effect of habitat on survival, reproduction and behaviour. Mortality was generally higher in open areas and managed forests and reproductive success decreased after forest management. Breeding females were more sensitive to environmental factors than males, possibly because of higher reproductive costs. Estimates of spatial demography suggested that there were more sinks than sources, and that they were located in open, managed forests. Behavioural decisions confirmed that open forests were associated with higher predation risks. However, decisions depended on social context; immigrants took highest risks and were the recipients of most aggression, largely an effect of social subordination. Also, parents provide their offspring with benefits that are withheld from immigrants. As a result, first-year survival was higher in retained offspring. Investigating the effects of multi-scale habitat quality on individual behaviour and population dynamics has generated an increased understanding of the effects of forest management on the dynamics of this population. This approach should facilitate development of an effective conservation management policy for this species.

Foraging-predator avoidance trade-offs made by migrant and resident elk (Cervus elaphus) on their sympatric winter range

Migratory behaviour of the Ya Ha Tinda (YHT) elk population is diminishing while the number of residents remaining on the YHT winter range year-round is increasing. Previous research addressing the fitness consequences of each migratory strategy assumed there was no advantage to either segment when they shared the YHT winter range. In testing this assumption, I found no spatial segregation of migrant and resident home-ranges during winter. Both groups were exposed to similar forage resources and residents were exposed to higher night-time, but not day-time predation risk. Residents were better than migrants at reducing the foraging costs of vigilance and increased vigilance in areas of high wolf predation risk, but not near human activity because of habituation. Migrants were not habituated to humans and exhibited more constant vigilance regardless of spatial variations in risk. My results do not support the previous assumption. Instead, I found residents may be at an advantage on the winter range while forage is abundant and no snow is present. / Ecology
