Shyness and sociability re-examined: Psychometrics, interactions, and correlates

<p>Numerous studies have suggested that shyness and sociability may be orthogonal personality traits, each of which are associated with distinct behavioural and psychophysiological correlates. Shyness has been linked to a variety of adverse mental health outcomes, and individuals who are high on both shyness and sociability (conflicted subtype) may be particularly at risk. The current study first aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the Revised Cheek and Buss Shyness Scale (RCBSS; Cheek, 1983) before examining the moderating influence of sociability on shyness in relation to psychological and psychosomatic functioning. The internal consistency, test–retest reliability, and convergent/discriminant validity of the RCBSS was assessed using a sample of 152 university students, a subset of whom were tested 6 months later. Results provided support for the strong internal consistency and short- and long-term stability of the measure, as well as its convergent, divergent, and predictive validity.</p> <p>A significant shy X social interaction was found for the Bodily Preoccupations (BP) subscale of the Illness Attitudes Scale (IAS; Kellner, 1986, 1987). In particular, BP scores were significantly higher for the high shy-high social group than the low shy-high social group. This finding suggests that the conflicted subtype can be distinguished not only on behavioural and psychophysiological dimensions but also on the psychosomatic level. This result extends prior research and lends further evidence towards the notion that the treatment of shyness as a multidimensional construct, rather than a unitary construct, accounts for additional variance in psychosomatic outcomes in different types of shy and socially withdrawn individuals. Accordingly, this knowledge may better inform treatment in some cases of extreme shyness in which people are socially withdrawn and inhibited for different reasons.</p> / Master of Science (MSc)

Use of the Power Card Strategy as an Intervention with an Elementary School Student with Asperger Syndrome: Increasing On-Task Behavior in the General Education Setting

It has been slightly more than a decade since Asperger syndrome was recognized as a distinct sub-category of autism disorder and was first given a diagnostic category in the DSM-IV. An abundance of suggestions, ideas, and recommendations for treatment have been offered, yet there is only a limited amount of research that empirically evaluates these interventions. This study explores an intervention, the Power Card Strategy (PCS), previously demonstrated to be effective with improving social behaviors with a young girl with autism, by employing the student's area of special interest. An advantage to this intervention is it is relatively easy to implement, requires minimal time, and the cost is virtually nil. This study used a reversal design to investigate the utility of the Power Card Strategy to increase on-task behavior during teacher-directed math instruction in a general education class. The results of this study suggest that the PCS was effective for increasing on-task behavior with this student. An upward trend was observed in the student's on-task behavior during the intervention condition. Upon return to the baseline condition, the student's on-task behavior stabilized at levels observed during intervention, suggesting that skills acquired during the intervention phase maintained.

L’importance de la polyphonie organisationnelle dans un processus de changement stratégique

Ce mémoire de maîtrise s’applique à montrer comment la polyphonie narrative peut nous informer sur le vécu des employés en période de changement organisationnel. Pour être en mesure d’entendre ces multiples voix, nous avons fait l’étude des récits des employés et des dirigeants dans le cadre d’un tel processus. Nous voulions, à travers les récits des employés, illustrer empiriquement la manière dont ces récits constituent le changement organisationnel lui-même en mettant à jour les préoccupations qui alimentent le processus de changement et qui sont constitutives à la fois du changement et de l’entité organisationnels. Ces récits ont été analysés selon une perspective polyphonique, autrement dit, une approche mettant de l’avant l’existence de multiples voix en tensions, des voix composant ces récits. Pour procéder à l’analyse de ces récits, notre cadre théorique a mobilisé la notion de ventriloquie, tel que proposée et présentée dans les travaux de Cooren (2012, 2013). Ces préoccupations ont été analysées comme autant de voix animant et « auteurisant » (authoring) ces récits, fondant ainsi une polyphonie narrative que nous avons tenté de repérer et répertorier dans des entrevues. L’analyse de cette polyphonie par le repérage des voix, figures et tensions nous a permis de mettre à jour les préoccupations constitutives du changement lui-même. Dans ce mémoire, nous avons ainsi identifié puis analysé, les voix, les figures et les tensions qui illustrent le vécu de certains employés en période de changement organisationnel, comblant ainsi certaines lacunes repérées dans la littérature portant sur la polyphonie et le changement organisationnel. Comme nous le montrons, la littérature actuelle sur la polyphonie organisationnelle ne permet pas de saisir la manière dont les employés donnent voix à des préoccupations qui émergent du processus de changement et comment ces préoccupations interagissent et s’intègrent dans leurs récits organisationnels sur le changement. L’analyse de cette polyphonie par le repérage des voix, figures et tensions nous permet non seulement de mettre à jour les préoccupations constitutives du changement, mais aussi certains mécanismes communicationnels qui émergent de ce processus. En somme, l’étude de la polyphonie narrative nous permet de rendre compte de ce qui habite et préoccupe les employés en période de changement. Aussi, l’ensemble des préoccupations identifiées nous permet de brosser un portrait global du vécu des employés pendant cette période de changement tout en mettant à jour les tensions qui composent ce processus. / This master thesis illustrates the ways by which polyphonic narratives reveal some information about the employees’ experiences during a process of organizational change. In order to identify these multiple voices, we analyzed the employees’ and managers’ narratives. Through the employees’ narratives, we tried to empirically illustrate the way narratives are constitutive of organizational change. Furthermore, we sought to bring to light employees’ preoccupations that feed and are constitutive of the change process as well as the organizational entity. The employees’ stories were analyzed through a polyphonic perspective, that is, an approach that highlight the existence of multiple voices in tensions, voices that are part of the employees’ narratives. To help us investigate these stories, our theoretical framework was based on the ventriloquist approach, as proposed by Cooren (2012, 2013). These preoccupations were analyzed as several voices animating and authoring these narratives, hence creating a polyphonic narrative that we attempted to identify and categorize in our interviews. This polyphonic analysis, by the tracking of voices, figures and tensions allowed us to shed light on preoccupations that are constitutive of the change process. In this master thesis we identified and analyzed the voices, figures and tensions that illustrate the ways by which each employee experienced the process of organizational change. Consequently, we were able to contribute to the literature on polyphonic narratives and organizational change. As we show, this literature does not allow us to understand the way by which employees voice their concerns emerging from the change process and how these preoccupations interact with one another and integrate into organizational change narratives. Our findings suggest that all the employees’ preoccupations and concerns provide a global picture of their experiences during the process of organizational change and a better understanding of the tensions that are also part of the change process.

Constructing a psychological retention profile for diverse generational groups in the higher education environment

This study focused on constructing a psychological retention profile by investigating the relationship between an individual’s psychological career-related attributes (psychological contract and psychosocial career preoccupations), biographical variables (generational cohorts, gender, race, marital status, job level and employment status) and retention factors (compensation, job characteristics, training and development, supervisor support, career opportunities, work/life balance and commitment) in order to inform retention management practices for diverse groups of employees in the context of higher educational environment in South Africa. A quantitative survey was conducted on a purposively selected sample of academic and support staff (N = 579) at the University of South Africa. The canonical correlation analysis indicated employer obligations and state of the psychological contract as the strongest psychological career-related variables in predicting the retention factor variables of compensation, training and development opportunities, supervisor support, career opportunities and organisational commitment. The canonical correlation data were used to inform the structural equation modelling, which indicated a good fit between employer obligations and compensation and training and development opportunities and between the state of the psychological contract and supervisor support and career opportunities. Hierarchical moderated regression showed that psychosocial career preoccupations significantly moderated the relationship between the psychological contract and training and development opportunities as retention factor. Moderated mediation modelling found that the effect of positive perceptions of employer obligations on high levels of retention factors satisfaction through the state of the psychological contract increased when the scores on psychosocial career preoccupations were high. The results also indicated that the effect of positive perceptions of employer obligations on high levels of retention factors satisfaction through positive state of psychological contract increased when the age group of participants was lower (i.e. younger generations). Tests for significant mean differences revealed significant differences in terms of the biographical variables. On a theoretical level, the study expanded the understanding of the individual and behavioural elements of the hypothesised psychological retention profile. On an empirical level, this study delivered an empirically tested psychological retention profile in terms of the behavioural elements. Constructing a psychosocial profile for enhancing the career success of South African professional women

The research focused on constructing a psychosocial profile for the career development practices of professional women. The relationship dynamics between the individuals’ psychosocial attributes (emotional intelligence, career adaptability, psychosocial career preoccupations, self-efficacy, perceived organisational and social support) were investigated and whether the constructs significantly related to individuals’ experiences of career satisfaction when controlling for age, race, marital status, number of children, job level, total monthly income and education level. A cross-sectional quantitative survey was conducted on a purposive sample of professional women (N = 606) from various South African organisations. Inferential statistics (multiple regressions, canonical correlation analysis, structural equation modelling, hierarchical moderated regression and tests for significant differences) revealed core elements of the empirically manifested psychosocial profile. Participants’ career preoccupations and perceptions of organisational support were significant predictors of career satisfaction, along with age, race and job level. Managing own emotions, career control and self-efficacy were highlighted as important psychological resources in strengthening career satisfaction. Perceived organisational support and social support functioned as significant mechanisms in buffering the negative effect of high career preoccupations on levels of career satisfaction, and strengthening the link between emotional intelligence, career adaptability, and self-efficacy and career satisfaction. Significant mean differences were observed for age, race and job level groups regarding career preoccupations, perceived organisational support and career satisfaction. In addition, significant mean differences were observed for marital status, total monthly income and education level groups regarding career preoccupations, perceived organisational support and career satisfaction. On a theoretical level, the study advanced career theory for the career development of professional women by identifying the relationships found between the hypothesised psychosocial profile elements and career satisfaction. On the empirical level the study contributed towards constructing a psychosocial profile that informs the career development and satisfaction of professional women. Toward constructing a psychosocial model of career wellbeing for the South African working adult

In this research, a cross-sectional quantitative survey was conducted on a convenience sample of working adults (N = 550) from different race, gender, age, qualification, job level and tenure groups in various South African organisations, with the intention of developing a psychosocial model of career wellbeing for the working adult in the South African context. To identify the elements and nature of the model, the relationship dynamics between the constructs of occupational passion, psychological career resources, psychosocial career preoccupations and the outcome of career satisfaction were examined. The mediating effect of psychological career resources and psychosocial career preoccupations on the relationship dynamics between occupational passion and career satisfaction was determined. The moderating effect of certain sociodemographic variables (race, gender, age, qualification, job level, and tenure) on the relationship dynamics between the research constructs was measured. In addition, an evaluation of the differences manifested by individuals from various sociodemographic backgrounds (race, gender, age, qualification, job level, and tenure) regarding the research constructs added to an understanding of the manifested model. Correlation and inferential statistical analyses (multi-level mediation modelling, regression analysis and tests for significant mean differences) indicated that career management practices should consider harmonious passion to be an important intrinsic motivational antecedent in explaining the variance in individuals’ career satisfaction as it can facilitate the development of important psychosocial resources. These resources include flexible career preferences, well-crafted career plans and actions to achieve career goals, career harmonisers (i.e. self-esteem, behavioural adaptability and emotional literacy) and a strong need to be upskilled and employable (career adaptation needs). These elements manifested as the core elements of the psychosocial career wellbeing profile. Job level and race were further indicated as important sociodemographic variables in explaining levels of career satisfaction. Differences between race, gender, age, qualification, job level and tenure groups, for the constructs of occupational passion, psychological career resources, psychosocial career preoccupations and career satisfaction, also need to be considered in the career wellbeing profile. Theoretically, the results advanced career theory by empirically validating the core elements of the career wellbeing profile. The end goal of the research was to draw conclusions on the relationship dynamics (magnitude and direction) between the constructs for the purpose of proposing organisational career development practices for the knowledge worker. A quantitative cross-sectional research approach was followed and involved a sample of N = 404 knowledge workers registered with South African professional bodies. Descriptive, correlation and multivariate inferential statistics were performed. Supplementary to the canonical correlation analysis, regression and structural equation modelling analysis indicated that the career satisfaction profile has unique influencing factors while the self-perceived employability profile also has its unique influencing factors. Moderated regression analysis showed that individuals’ career cognitions (i.e. levels of career adaptability and psychosocial career preoccupations) were not conditional upon their psychosocial career resources (i.e. employability attributes, career anchors and career values) in explaining their levels of career satisfaction and self-perceived employability. The career cognitions and psychosocial career resources had individually specific main effects to consider in understanding knowledge workers’ career satisfaction and self-perceived employability. Stepwise regression and the hierarchical moderated regression analysis showed that age, race and employment status were important to consider in terms of the career satisfaction profile of knowledge workers. Race seemed especially important to consider in terms of their self-perceived employability. Differences among the biographical groups also suggested unique career development needs to consider in multi-culturally diverse work contexts. The career satisfaction and employability profile was constructed based on the key insights derived from the core significant findings. The research extended career satisfaction and employability theory.
