The role of donors in promoting professionalism in non-profit organisations

Mphule, Tlakale Suzan January 2014 (has links)
The debate of Non-Profit Organisations (NPO) transformation has by far occupied the welfare sector with the urge to evolve and employ business-like attributes in their operations. Professionalism is pointed out as an attribute NPO should move towards to improve their services and be accountable to donors (Reinhardt, 2009). This report investigated the role of National Lotteries Board (NLB) as a donor in promoting professionalism in NPOs. Case-studies were conducted on two selected NPOs who received grants from the NLB through the National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund. Data was collected using interviews, documentation and observation. The analysis of the data showed that donors use funding and reporting requirements to drive professionalism within the NPO sector. The recommendations in the report are for both NPOs and donors indicating the need for collaboration between the two parties in ensuring that professionalism benefits them collectively.

Workshop - Integrating Professional Issues Into the Technical Curriculum: Teaching Students About the Challenge of Professionalism and Ethics in an Increasingly Automated World Living With Sophisticated Machines

Gotterbarn, Donald, Miller, Keith W. 01 January 2014 (has links)
In support of ACM's and the IEEE's commitment to professionalism, the ACM Committee on Professional Ethics, a technical co-sponsor of this conference, is presenting a workshop designed to help faculty provide students with tools to better understand and to better resolve their ethical challenges as professionals. This workshop will have a special focus on issues raised by robots, Google Glass, and other increasingly sophisticated devices. The workshop will use both lecture and small group activities to introduce and enhance participants' teaching skills in computer and engineering ethics. Leaders will present materials to be used in a complete professional ethics course, and that can also be integrated as examples and exercises into specific technical courses. The materials will include case studies, suggested course syllabi, and suggestions for creating and grading assignments. The workshop will feature demonstrations of several advanced devices, and how they can be used to teach about ethics, and to attract attention to ethical issues.

Die doeltreffendheid van benutting van kantooradministrateurs in ondernemings

Crause, Anna Catharina January 1998 (has links)
Masters Diploma in Technology: Office Administration at the School of Business Informatics at the Cape Technikon / During visits to business organisations where students undergo co-operative education, it was revealed that functional managers, irrespective the size and type of organisation, are bound by many administrative tasks that leave them very little time for strategic planning and decision making. It also places a lot of pressure on these managers to keep up with technological developments. It also seems as if administrative staff who possess the required training, skills and proficiency are not utilised fully, and consequently do not experience work satisfaction - which leads to increased staff turnover. The solution to this problem seems to be the appointment of managers in charge of the administrative activities in an organisation - on all managerial levels, but especially on middle and lower management levels. Not only does this free functional managers from the additional burden of administrative obligations, but also enables them to concentrate on their primary function. In the study, these managers of administrative activities are referred to as office administrators. In this study, the factors that contribute most to the effective utilisation of the office administrator in business organisations were investigated. During this process, a model was also developed for the effective utilisation of office administrators.

Meaning and Suffering in Organizations

Driver, Michaela 04 September 2007 (has links)
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of suffering for meaning making and spirituality in organizational contexts. Design/methodology/approach The paper explores how organizational spaces may be created for meaning making and how this is linked to the idea of compassion. Findings The paper suggests that while suffering has been explored in organizations, it has not been studied relative to existential meaning making. This is identified as a significant gap in research on organizational spirituality. The paper attempts to fill this gap and suggests that the study of suffering has to separate suffering as an objective phenomenon, which should be eliminated in organizations, from suffering as a subjective experience in which meaning may be found. It is also proposed that, for existential meaning to be uncovered in the face of suffering, organizational spaces have to be created in which such meaning making can take place. Originality/value The paper suggests that suffering can be a pathway to the discovery of spiritual meaning.
