Molecular characterisation of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, clinical isolates obtained in the Khomas region, Windhoek, NamibiaBreuer, Evelyn Ndinelao January 2017 (has links)
Thesis (MSc (Biomedical Technology))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017. / According to the Namibia National Tuberculosis Control Programme (NTCP) report of 2008, Namibia has one of the highest TB infection rates in the world with a case notification rate of 748/100,000. Rapid, specific and sensitive diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) is needed for correct TB patient management. One of the aims of this study was thus to compare direct microscopy with two rapid molecular diagnostic tools (viz. GeneXpert MTB/RIF and Hain Genotype® MTBDR plus assay) for the identification of MTB from samples collected from the Khomas Region, Windhoek, Namibia. Only patients with positive TB sputum collected at the clinics and health facilities in the Khomas Region, Windhoek were eligible for the study. Three hundred and eighty-four samples were confirmed acid-fast positive by utilising the auramine staining method. The rifampicin (RIF) resistance profile detected by both molecular techniques was then compared for characterisation of the samples as drug resistant. Lastly, participants completed a survey, which included questions related to demographic and epidemiological data. Demographic data included patient age, gender, region of residence and history of treatment. The data was collected using a structured questionnaire and was captured in an Excel spreadsheet. It was then imported into Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 25 for data analysis. A memorandum of understanding was also signed with the Namibia Institute of Pathology (NIP) to obtain permission to use their samples and the equipment at their site.

Pracovní rehabilitace - Individuální plán pracovní rehabilitace / The work rehabilitation - The work rehabilitation individual planBIENERTOVÁ, Jitka January 2009 (has links)
Nowadays, namely at the beginning of the third millennium, every individual is entitled to free choice of occupation and acquisition of the means to satisfy his/her necessaries of life. Even the handicapped people have the same rights as the other citizens and they therefore have not only the right to a special (adapted, modified) conditions of work, but also to assistance in the preparation for employment. Work rehabilitation serves to this purpose. In particular the individual plan of work rehabilitation is designed for the clients {--} handicapped persons. The objective of my work was to describe the specific steps and procedures leading to integration of physically disadvantaged persons within the open labour market, in particular to describe the existing methods enabling the evaluation of the current health potential of the handicapped client as a precondition of integration on the labour market. The determination of qualitative research was the key point of the work. I focused in my work on the research in the region of Chomutov and Žatec, carried out from September 2008 till December 2008 in Chomutov. The persons involved in the project are long-term unemployed job applicants with a certain size of disability.

Networking: enabling professional development and institutionalisation of environmental education courses in Southern AfricaLupele, Justin Kalaba January 2007 (has links)
This study was aimed at understanding how networking can enable or constrain professional development and institutionalisation of environmental education courses in southern Africa in the context of the Course Development Network (CDN), a project of the Southern Africa Development Community Regional Environmental Education Programme (SADC REEP). The study involved 12 institutions (each institution was represented in the CDN by a staff member) in eight SADC member states. It was contextualized through a review of social, political, environmental and educational developments in southern Africa, with specific reference to regionalization processes, as the SADC REEF is constituted under this post-colonial political framework. Relational philosophy informed the research process and methodology. The philosophy underpinned three distinct, yet related theoretical perspectives namely: critical realism, which provided the ontological perspectives of the study; Actor Network Theory; and Community of Practice, which provided the epistemological perspectives. Data was generated during a 33-month period in southern Africa and 12 months in the United Kingdom (and on a one week visit to Italy). During a 12 month Split Site Commonwealth Scholarship award, tenable at Manchester Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom, I studied the Environment and School Initiative (ENSI) and the Sustainability Education for European Primary Schools (SEEPS), to examine whether the same mechanisms that made them successful would apply to the CDN in the context of southern Africa. While these two case studies provided useful insight into the relationship between networking, professional development and institutionalization of environmental education programmes, they were not the main focus of the research. Data analysis was mainly through inductive, abductive and retroductive modes of inference. Inductive data analysis was done by means of Nvivo – a computer software package used for qualitative data analysis. The software aided in revealing features and relationships in the data in more depth as it allowed flexibility in working with data. Abduction is the interpretation of a phenomenon by means of a conceptual framework. In this study, I used Actor Network Theory (ANT) (Latour & Woolgar, 1979; Callon, 1986) and Community of Practice (COP) (Lave, 1988; Lave & Wenger, 1991; Fullan, 2003) as analytical conceptual frameworks to probe networking and professional development respectively. Data on institutionalisation of environmental education courses was analysed by means of retroductive mode of inference, which is a thought operation that enables the understanding of social reality beyond what is empirically observable or experienced. This study reveals that there were a number of necessary (internal) and contingent (external) factors that enabled or constrained networking, professional development and institutionalisation of environmental education courses in the context of the CDN. The key factors included existing cultural capital, donor political economy, power relations, poverty related factors and social transformation trends. The study found that relational approaches and the use of three relational theoretical lenses provided a broader lens which enabled this study to identify different dynamics, greater ontological depth and understanding of the relational dynamics and relations at play in the CDN beyond the participants' experience and observable events. The study also contends that networking can provide a support structure for social transformation and change in environmental education.

The integration of academic skills/support programmes into university department structures: a case study in the sociology of educationDrewett, Michael January 1993 (has links)
This research focuses on the extent to which the Rhodes University Academic Skills Programme (ASP), now known as the Academic Development Programme, is able to act as an agent of progressive change within Rhodes University. In so doing it concentrates on the potential of the strategy of integrated academic development for dealing with the academic needs of university students within the context of South Africa as a society in transition. The candidate considers the inability of structuralist educational theory to account for the potential of human agency at the site of formal education. It is shown that structuralist theories provide deterministic and pessimistic accounts of the role of institutions of formal education. In support of this contention this study explores the history of ASP at Rhodes University, demonstrating that significant change in student academic development has already taken place. ASP has contributed to change within the said University through challenging traditional notions of academic development. This thesis suggests that the non-structuralist critical theory of Jurgen Habermas provides a more holistic account of ASP than do structuralist theories of formal education. Through the incorporation of Habermas's theory of communicative action a process of critical integration is explored, showing that a strategy of integrated academic development has the potential to involve all those who have an interest in university education through a process of rational discourse. This potential is strengthened by the fact that many students and staff have expressed an awareness of the need for an integrated academic development strategy. This thesis subsequently explores the possibility of there being a process of democratic and rational discourse which could lead to a progressive integration programme in the Rhodes University Department of Sociology and Industrial Sociology. This thesis stresses the contested nature of the integration process within departments. It is indicated that Habermas's critical theory is able to account for the changes which have taken place in the past and which are presently under way. It is argued that it not possible to predict future outcomes, but that if ASP pursues a process of rational discourse, it will indeed be able to stimulate a critical integrative approach to academic development in the Rhodes University Department of Sociology and Industrial Sociology.

Evaluace environmentálních výukových programů z hlediska tvorby environmentálních postojů / Evaluation of the effects on environmental attitude of the environmental educational projectsPAPEŽOVÁ, Nikola January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to determine the influence of environmental education programs on elementary schools pupils' attitudes based on the fact that the increasing number of visits of pupils at the center of environmental education increases the attitudes and positive behavior of individuals towards the environment. The first part of the thesis is a comprehensive view of attitudes, their measurement, methodological problems, environmental education in the contemporary curricular education in our country, environmental education, educational programs. Furthermore, the researches were practically tested on the target group of pupils of primary and elementary school second degree. The second part consists of two questionnaires. There are statements to which the respondent attributes their degree of agreement or disagreement with using Likert's scale. Queries in the questionnaires are divided into four areas that are researched more closer. These parts are called: The attitude towards the nature conservation, interest in nature, pro-environmental behavior and attitude towards the environment. Respondents create selected files from the documents provided by the Center for Ecological Education Toulcův dvůr, z. s. in the course of four years. Data obtained from them is statistically evaluated using a general regression model and linear regression. The results show that the number of visits to pupils of primary school have no impact on attitudes towards the environment, attitudes to nature conservation and on pro-environmental behavior. The only area where the relationship was found was of interest to nature. On the other hand, the results of the elementary school second degree show that the attitudes are very pronounced in all the studied areas.
