Jan Kochanowski's 'Psałterz Dawidów' in the context of the European tradition

Sanders, Ben January 2001 (has links)
This thesis examines Jan Kochanowski's vernacular verse translation of the Psalms, Psalterz Dawidow (Krakow, 1579), in terms both of its formal composition and its content, and illustrates the poet's debt to western Europe. It will be seen that his innovations in versification owe much to developments in the vernacular literatures of Italy and France, while the content of Psalterz Dawidow shows evidence of Kochanowski's use of neo-Latin works. Following the methodology employed by scholars in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the author of this thesis has reexamined the question of Kochanowski's use of sources. A comparison between Kochanowski's text and vernacular and Latin translations (prose and verse) and commentaries published in or before 1579 broadly confirms the findings of earlier studies while at the same time identifying a new source of Psalterz Dawidow, John Calvin's commentary on the Psalms (In librum Psalmorum, Iohannis Calvini commentarius (Geneva, 1557)). Furthermore, this thesis attempts to challenge the view expressed in previous studies that Kochanowski's use of Protestant sources, and the use of his translation by Protestants, is evidence that the poet himself had Protestant sympathies. Having established that the character of the Reformation and Counter Reformation in Poland was markedly different from that in the rest of Europe, that Calvinism was not suppressed and, indeed, won the support of the majority of the szlachta, the author of this thesis suggests that Kochanowski's choice of Protestant sources was motivated by the merits of the individual works rather than, necessarily, by any firmly held religious convictions. Indeed, an analysis of his oeuvre as a whole reveals that Kochanowski's works owe much to the humanist tradition and rarely provide any clear evidence of whether he was a Catholic or a Protestant.

The use of the second Psalm in Jewish and Christian tradition of exegesis : a study of Christological origins

Wood, Chester Elvin January 1976 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the use of the second Psalm in Jewish and Christian tradition of exegesis. This study begins with the O.T. itself and traces the employment of Ps. 2 in Jewish and Christian literature up to 300 A.D. As the sub-title indicates the focus of this inquiry is the christological employment of Ps. 2 by N.T. writers. Ch. I gives detailed consideration to Ps. 2:1, 2, 7-9 (i.e. those verse used in the N.T.) in its O.T. context. This is necessary because it is impossible to relate the later uses of Ps. 2 to its original meaning unless this has been ascertained. Such problems as the scope of the rebellion (vss. 1, 2), the significance of חֹק and "you are my Son, today I have begotten you" (vs. 7), the pointing of תרעם (vs. 9), the place of Ps. 2 in its O.T. Traditionsgeschichte, the relation of the M.T. to the LXX, other Greek versions and the Targum and the messianic nature of Ps. 2 are taken up. Ch. II, intertestamental literature (i.e., D.S.S., Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha, Rabbinic literature), examines the quotation of Ps, 2:1,2 in 4QFlor 1 : 18ff, the allusion to Ps. 2:7 in IQSa 2:11, the clearly messianic use of Ps. 2:9 in Psalms of Solomon 17:26 along with allusions to Ps, 2:2,9 in Psalms of Solomon 17,18. Attention is given to allusions to Ps. 2 in Wisdom of Solomon, Sirach, IV Ezra and I Enoch. The occurrences of Ps. 2 in the Rabbinic literature are only surveyed because in most cases the traditions preserved in this literature cannot be shown to be pre-Christian. Finally, the use of Son of God as a messianic title in pre-Christian Judaism is sketched. Ch. III-V deal with the N.T. and concentrate upon the following areas of inquiry: l) introductory formula, 2) text form, 3) contribution of the quotation to the argument or theme of the passage, i.e. what is the significance of the quotation, 4) function of the quotation, i.e. how is it used in its immediate and wider context, 5) hermeneutical stance and techniques and 6) the relation of the quotation or the allusion to earlier and later Traditionsgeschichte. Ch. III examines the use of Ps. 2:1,2 in Acts 3:18,4:5,25ff, Mt. 22:34. Ch. IV deals with Ps. 2:7 in Acts 13:33, Heb. 1:2,5, 5:5, 7:28 and the alleged allusions in the baptism and transfiguration voices and Rom. 1:4. Ch. V is concerned with Ps. 2:9 in 2,26,27, 12:5, 19:15 and allusions to Ps. 2:2 in 11:15, 12:10, 19:19. The use of Ps. 2 in the Church Fathers is incorporated in chs. III-V.

O verbo no livro dos Salmos: a semântica dos aspectos / The verb inside the Psalms: semantics' aspects

Antonio Valbert Alves Silva 05 December 2012 (has links)
This paper is a study of verbal aspects in the book of Psalms, considering their semantic-syntactic value. To this end, the evolution in language studies is considered, based on Hermann Paul (1970); the development of the science of meaning through the work of Breal (1925), enriched by Marquess perspective (2001); the evolution of linguistics through structuralism based on the works of Ferdinand de Saussure and Leonor de Bloomfield and on Noam Chomskys generative grammar. We focus on the discoursive textual dimension to generate formulations about the verb and articulate a relation between the theory of text and discourse according to Travaglias perspective (1991). The study portrays the relations of meaning that verbs take on inside the text, based on the study of aspect according to the assumptions of Castilho (1968), Travaglia (1986, 1991) and Azeredo (2010). To establish relations between verbal aspect and the biblical message of the Psalms, the study draws on Ilaris semantic foundations (2001), and on the semantic and theological commentary in Champlin (2000)

An Analytical Study of Selected Jazz Settings of Psalms Composed between 1958 and 2012.

Hardymon, Rocky D. 30 May 2013 (has links)
AN ANALYTICAL STUDY OF SELECTED JAZZ SETTINGS OF PSALMS COMPOSED BETWEEN 1958-2012 Rocky DeWayne Hardymon, D.M.A. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2013 Chair: Esther R. Crookshank A trend in U. S. Protestant and Catholic churches that has gained popularity over recent decades is the use of jazz music as a means of expression in worship. The purpose of this study was to compile an analytical guide to select available jazz settings of the Psalms, published and unpublished. The methodology began with a systematic search for psalm settings fitting the chronological parameters in online databases and Christian jazz websites. Chapter 2 presents a reception history from primary sources of jazz in the church and U.S. society within the larger context of relationships between arts and the church since the Enlightenment. Primary sources include interviews with composers, correspondence, published interviews, contemporaneous newspaper reviews, and composers' liner or program notes. Search results yielded a list of 168 pieces by sixty-one composers composed between 1958 and 2012. Of these, twenty-eight psalm settings by 24 composers were selected for analysis, 19 with text and nine instrumental settings. Chapter 3 contains biographical sketches of the composers and examines their philosophies. All but two composers were from the United States, with two European. Analysis of the psalms in Chapters 4 and 5 focused on textual and musical forms, text-music relationships in the context of the psalmic genre, and distinctive musical traits associated with particular jazz styles, which ranged from art song, rock, bossa nova, blues, and free jazz to hybrid subtypes such as jazz/rock and gospel/pop. Instrumental psalms represented eight styles including lyrical ballad, gospel fusion shuffle, Afro-Cuban swing, and post-modern bop. The conclusions summarize the significance of jazz psalms within the broader history of sacred jazz, demographic data on the jazz composers, and performance considerations for jazz psalms. Included are four appendices: 1) a list of the select jazz psalms and their composers; 2) a complete list of the 61 jazz composers and 168 psalms found; 3) a list of all 168 Psalm settings found in numerical order; 4) a list of churches in North America that regularly offer jazz music.

A multiplicidade de vozes no salmo 137 / The multiplicity of voices un psalm 137

Miriam Kleingesinds Rachmann 29 November 2011 (has links)
This paper presents the analysis of Psalm 137. Pointed out which are the subject identifying speakers in this psalm, then a multiplicity of voices. Biblical exegetes and commentators analyze these voices from different perspectives. We propose a parallel display of these interpretations, as well as examine how these voices are arranged so that in the psalm, even with multiple speakers, the poem converge to a single point of view, forming the unity of the psalm: the lament for the exile and possible replies to the crisis brought.

The function of the tricolon in the Psalms of Ascents

Stocks, Simon Paul January 2011 (has links)
In Biblical Hebrew poetry the common bipartite line-form is sometimes varied to become tripartite, producing lines commonly designated ‘tricola’. Studies of the form or function of tricola have been limited in their value by inconsistent or ambiguous approaches to the colometry of the text. A review of theories of colometry finds the accentual rhythmical approach of Sievers to provide the most consistent and reliable analysis. This approach can be nuanced by the adoption of numerical limits on words and syllables that are commensurate with several other approaches, in order to provide an explicit and consistent basis for assessing colometry. The Psalms of Ascents are taken as a sample corpus of poetic texts and their colometry is assessed on that basis. Particular attention is paid to a detail of Sievers’ theory that identifies a six-stress tripartite line as rhythmically equivalent to a six-stress bicolon. Such a line is designated a ‘para-tricolon’ and is distinguished from a full tricolon that typically has eight or more stresses. Similarly, three different analyses of the macro-structure of each psalm are used to explore how it is structured through the connections between its component cola and lines. The internal syntactic and semantic structure of each tripartite line is analysed in order to facilitate an assessment of its function within the structure of the psalm and to contribute to a general characterisation of tripartite lines. The significance of enjambment is particularly explored as a distinguishing factor between different line-forms and as a means of uniting non-parallel cola.It is evident that no single defining characteristic of a tripartite line exists. The semantic and syntactic structures of tripartite lines both vary widely. However, clear differences are apparent between the form and function of para-tricola and those of tricola.

Prayer for protection : a comparative perspective on Psalms in relation to Lozi prayer traditions

Kamuwanga, Liswaniso 11 August 2008 (has links)
Thematically, this research interrogates prayer for protection. Its title embodies two distinct religious traditions namely the biblical Psalms in the Old Testament and Lozi prayers grounded in a broad African religious cultural experience. The concept of prayer precipitates questions regarding functionality, structural and theological aspects. Further, this investigation problematizes a theoretical trajectory of closeness between biblical and African cultural experience proposed by some scholars. This study makes a contribution towards a comparative approach in Biblical Studies. An integrated hermeneutical reading is applied to Psalms scholarship. The argumentation is based on a construct of cultic, literary, historical contexts and theological analyses of Psalms 28; 64; 77; 91 and 140. A contemporary reading of similar prayer traditions arising from Lozi people is then conducted. From a perspective of both Psalm studies and African religious experience prayer for protection is seen as a petitioner’s response to the Supreme Being during periods of danger and adversarial encounters. Such danger is imminent at the time of prayer. A victim places his/ her confidence in the salvific intervention of God or the gods. Through this standpoint selected psalms are considered not as songs of praise, but rather as prayers of protection from danger and enemy attacks. A parallel is drawn to the Lozi suppliants’ response to various cultural foes like tribal enemies, malicious neighbours and witchcraft. Other situations of danger are identified as mythological and natural calamities such as drought and crop failure. A comparative analysis of concepts like God, enemies, petitioners, elements of prayer, cultic and other related aspects has yielded similarities and differences. The results of this research contribute to a data bank on indigenous Lozi knowledge systems, hermeneutical and dialogical points of departure between the two traditions within the context of Biblical and Religious Studies. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Biblical and Religious Studies / unrestricted
