Principles of organisation of psychic energy within psychoanalysis : a systems theory perspective

Connolly, John Patrick 05 1900 (has links)
The concept of Psychic Energy holds a very important position in the field of Psychoanalysis, particularly within the theories of Sigmund Freud. These ideas, including the notion of a constancy of excitation, or the ‘pleasure principle’, as well as energy transfer and ‘cathexis’, are important not only historically in terms of the subsequent development of Psychoanalytic theory, but also remain a core conceptual assumption of a number of concepts in contemporary use. However, the central ideas related to psychic energy have undergone little substantial revision or development since the end of Freud’s career, despite a number of compelling critiques that call into question the central definitions and assumptions of these concepts, particularly the principles defining their governance. Grobbelaar (1989) has suggested that a number of problems within Psychoanalytic theory can be powerfully addressed through recourse to central propositions from the field of systems theory, and the case is made in the present thesis that some of the core problems with the energic theory may indeed be the result of a pre-systems epistemology. The present study proposes that psychic energy be defined as recursively constituted through three levels of the human system (inorganic, organic and informational), and that the core principles of regulation at the informational level is not constancy, or pleasure, but rather the necessity of maintaining organisation. In line with this proposition, the study reviews a number of theoretical propositions from systems theory and cybernetics (including the notions of energy defined as ‘information’ or ‘free energy’) and how they may be usefully deployed as principles of organisation of psychic energy within the psychoanalytic framework. Examples of how these principles may be used to explain Freud’s core observations of ego functioning are presented as well. / Psychology / Ph. D. (Psychology)

Bibiana da Gama Poggi 09 April 2007 (has links)
Obesity is considered nowadays a pathology that affects a growing number of people, reason for which its called the millennium disease. It mobilizes the attention of public healthy services, which invest continuously in research to control it. The bariatric surgery presents as an efficient method to control obesity through the intervention of a multi-professional team, composed by a surgeon, a psychologist, a nutritionist and a nurse, that take care of the patient during the pre-chirurgical phase and, afterwards, during the post-chirurgical one. The aim of our research was to investigate the movement of the oral compulsion in women that were submitted to the bariatric surgery. We searched the subjective aspects that always appear in the losing weight process in which its necessary a change in the ways of the oral satisfaction. We observed, therefore, the effects of the physical intervention in a compulsional body. In so doing, we restricted our analysis among the women for the reason that, in the Hospital da Polícia Militar de Pernambuco, place where the study was conducted, it was them that claimed more for the surgery and also because the women presented more difficulties after the surgery than the men. Its a research that focuses on the interaction between the theory and the clinics, which referential is the psychoanalytic one. Henceforth, we described the cases of three patients accompanied by the researcher before and after the surgery. Afterwards, we analyzed all the material collected. In all the cases it was verified that the physical intervention, although necessary to the patients weight control, was not sufficient to promote changes in the compulsional body. We concluded proving the importance of the psychotherapeutic process, which enabled the changes in the compulsional body of each patient.

As dores corporias na fibromialgia: reflexões psicanalíticas / Bodily pain in fibromyalgia: psychoanalytic reflections

Renata Soraya Coutinho da Costa 27 November 2009 (has links)
Although the etiology and etiological factors are controversial, this syndrome affects preferentially women between 30 and 60 years old. The purpose for this study was to analyze the symptoms of the fibromyalgia and their correlation with the psychosomatic body unit, from an interdisciplinary point of view. It was a psychoanalytical study in which we have analyzed field diary and life history of three female patients from the Physical Therapy Clinic of the Military Police of Pernambuco Hospital. The Freudian literature helped us to distinguish our own psychoanalytic study line. In addition, we have used literary works from other contemporary authors, such as Paul-Laurent Assoun, Didier Anzieu, Juan-David Nasio and Maria Helena Fernandes. This study is part of the research called The Social and the Body Psychopathology, in which the goal is to analyze the circuit of the drive in the psycho diseases of the body related to a social-contemporary context; and it is linked to the Fundamental Psychopathological and Psychoanalysis Research Group of the Psychological Post-Graduation Program of the Catholic University of Pernambuco
