Homeless Jesus: Exploring a Relationship between Public Religious Art and Public Dialogues on Homelessness

Wynia Baluk, Kaitlin January 2021 (has links)
Public art with religious themes or inspiration often represents, promotes, or challenges the concerns, values, characteristics, and/or history of the community in which this art is situated. This dissertation explores the contribution of public religious art to generating dialogue about social issues, in particular homelessness. It builds on scholarship indicating that publicly engaged art is a catalyst for promoting mutual understanding among diverse stakeholders with differing worldviews and joins an ongoing scholarly debate about the place of religion in a secular democratic society. As a case study, I use Timothy Schmalz’s bronze sculpture entitled Homeless Jesus, as an example of public art intended to generate public awareness about social marginalization and homelessness. Situated within the critical paradigm, this dissertation uses a case study methodology to explore the ways faith-based organizations and secular media elicit and use meanings through the representation of sculpture in public and mediated spaces. To gain multiple vantage points for examining the meanings and uses of Homeless Jesus, this case study draws on interviews with faith leaders at organizations who have a replica or are located near the replica in Hamilton, Ontario (n=12), online news articles that reference it (n=85), and photos of replicas in six urban locations. Data analysis proceeded through three stages: an iconography, a narrative inquiry, and a thematic analysis. This case study culminates in insights on the relationship between public religious art and public dialogues on social issues, such as homelessness. Findings indicate that public religious art is a mode in which faith-based organizations seek to contribute to public dialogues about social issues in a manner that is accessible and acceptable to those with differing worldviews. / Dissertation / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / Public art with religious themes or inspiration can represent, promote, or challenge the concerns, values, identity, and/or history of the communities in which it is situated. Public Art - Purpose and Benefits: Exploring Strategy in the New England City of Pittsfield, Ma

Landi, Pamela Jo 01 January 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Researchers explore various aspects related to art and urban life using terms such as cultural economy, the 'creative class', cultural clustering; and there are many more. Public art is one strategy, employed for any number of broader agendas spanning from economic aims to community identity. This study examines public art at the intersection of cultural planning strategy and community participation. A midsize New England city Pittsfield, Massachusetts, with a significant industrial mill heritage, provides a location from which to study public art within a specific context over a period of time spanning from 1970 to the present. Qualitative methods such as interviews, document review and survey of specific public art initiatives, both temporary and permanent, will help to uncover motivations and expectations that drive the development of public art projects. More knowledge about these purposes can lead to informative lines of questioning that may help planners and designers better understand the best application of public art in the landscape within a given community

Public Art for the Public? : Attitudes, Community, Evaluation & Communication

Laxen Di-Zazzo, Denise January 2021 (has links)
This thesis explores how Public Art involves the community and how Public Art Administrators view this involvement and how they communicate with the public. In extension, the analysis aims to explore how public art and related community engagement can be evaluated, and also proposes a simple evaluation tool. The analysis is based upon an examination of the four chosen Northern California Public Art Programs through comparing their Public Art Master Plans. In addition to analyzing the Master Plans, a survey was also sent out to all Program Managers with additional questions about their channels of communications, their web traffic, evaluation, their interactions with the local politicians, and how the COVID-19 pandemic had affected these aspects for them. The analysis also consisted of examining all the digital tools the Public Art Programs were utilizing; their social media, the social media context for each city, and their websites. The analysis is also based upon the theories by Jurgen Habermas in his work The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere. His perspective is applied on the analysis of the general public and on the attitude among the profession on the community’s involvement in public art, and in extension, the evaluation of public art. The main take-aways from the analysis is how the community is being described and viewed in the Master Plans, and by program staff. It becomes obvious that the general attitude is that the general public does not understand Public Art, and that they need to be educated and informed about it. Three perspectives of Public Art appears among the profession: The insider perspective, with the view of the community as passive receivers, the multidimensional perspective with a more differentiated approach both seeing the intrinsic value but also the measurable values, and the critical perspective questioning what public art is and what value it has at all. All of these call for a need of evaluation in a systematic and credible way. Social media and other types of new media can also contribute to communication, community engagement and evaluation. Finally, Public Art and the development of cities are heavily intertwined, but the true impact of Public Art needs to be evaluated, since the art does not stand alone - instead it is dependent on implementation, community engagement and a vibrant city.

Konst i stadens offentliga rum: en studie om offentlig konst och dess betydelse för människan och staden

Jönsson, Elise January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to gain an increased understanding of the relation betweencontemporary art and public spaces through a case study in the city of Borås. The studyfocuses on public space as a social process that is produced and reproduced in the meetingbetween people's actions and a physical place. The purpose of the case study is partly toinvestigate the importance of public art for Borås as a city and to analyze the city'sintentions behind its efforts. In addition to looking at the role and importance of art froma urban perspective the study examines people's private perceptions about what the art"does" and what it has potential to "do" with different public places in Borås. Theempirical material of the study consists largely of qualitative interviews. In addition tointerviews, observations have also been made to obtain an understanding and perceptionof public art in Borås on an individual level. The study has been able to demonstrate the versatile and complex importance of public art by linking the city's intentions of its efforts of public art with people's private experiences of art in the city. The city of Borås work with public art has grown and developed through a diverse interest in art in public spaces, where private and municipal actors have actively cooperated. A positive development where Borås work on public art has grown and developed has proven to be a new way for the city to profile itself and create a new identity. There are different opinions and thoughts about what public art means for Borås as a city and whether it can be considered as part of the city's new identity or not. People's differences means that they perceive and experience public art in many differentways. For someone, the art creates conflicts when it is considered provocative, while forsomeone else it can symbolize a memory, create peace or new perspectives. I wish that thestudy can lead to an increased reflection and understanding of the importance andpotential of public art as a part of the planning of the public and built environment. Withcontemporary public art as a tool, planning can increase the livability in the public spacesof the city.

ART AT THE AIRPORT AND THE INTERSECTION OF PUBLIC ART AND PUBLIC HISTORY

Williams, Stephanie Danielle January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the intersection of public art and public history in Philadelphia. This project looks at Philadelphia based case studies to see how the intersection of public art and public history can bring in new audiences, act as a form of advertisement, and shape interactive experiences for visitors. Connecting to a body of literature that deals with the power of place, I ask in this study how public history in unexpected places has the power to bring in new audiences that may not have the chance or even want to visit a traditional history museum or historic site. How do these projects and programs serve a community? The study features the history of Art at the Airport, an international series of art exhibits and programs at major airports. Among these, the Philadelphia International Airport’s Art at the Airport program exhibits traditional and innovative art and regularly features historic content. Any airport today is a place of high stress, but surveys of airport visitors indicate that for some art has the ability to relieve anxieties. So what happens when public art and public history collide in this space? While studying Art at the Airport as an intern, I witnessed people who stopped, learned, and gained knowledge of history in a public setting without a book, a teacher, or tour guide. This study allows me to show the power of public history and public art. / History

Public Art and Community Intervention: The Possibility of New Genre Public Art Focus on ¡§Art as Environment in Chiayi¡¨

Chen, Kuo-chang 29 June 2011 (has links)
The public arts is an unstable and a sustained idea of development from ¡§percent for art¡¨ to ¡§new genre public art¡¨. The public arts of Taiwan and the community construction develop together over 16 years. This research believes that, the future evolution of public arts must be combined with the community construction and should become a kind of medium, a kind of esthetics element. The author propose three patterns of community intervention from experiences and practices ¡G¡§To participate and to communicate continually¡¨, ¡§the meeting of arts and life¡¨ and ¡§the dynamic relations who are mutually main parts¡¨. We all take economic growth as the essential target since long time in Taiwan. However, we still can not catch up synchronously the cultural taste and the aesthetic value. Taking ¡§Art as Environment in Chiayi¡¨ and ¡§living aesthetics movement of Taiwan¡¨ to collate Joseph Beuys¡¦s concept and position of ¡§social sculpture¡¨ and ¡§everybody is the artist¡¨, thinks that the arts are a part of life and no longer separated from the daily life already. What the research wants to explore is, the development of public arts in the future will be based on community construction, coordinate with the political pushing ¡§living aesthetics movement of Taiwan¡¨, raise people's esthetics accomplishment from daily life, and enable Taiwan to become a rich country both in economy and culture.
