The Making of the White Middle-Class Radical: A Discourse Analysis of the Public Relations of the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador between 1980 and 1990

This study explores the role of public relations in the formation of a collective identity of the activists of the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES) between 1980 and 1990. CISPES was a radical U.S.-based organization comprised of a majority of white college-educated members. CISPES had two goals: 1) stop the U.S. military assistance to El Salvador, and 2) support the Salvadoran revolutionary movements that were fighting a U.S.-backed government. Through interviews, discourse analysis and historical research, this work shows that CISPES used as currency the whiteness of its activists, in conjunction with its educational background, to influence public opinion and policy-making in the U.S. The formation of CISPES as a white organization was partially achieved by continuous negotiations with Salvadoran radicals living in the U.S. Early in the 1990s, CISPES' collective identity as a white organization entered in crisis as internal debates on gender and race along with social changes in the national and international levels challenged dominant views and the status quo of whiteness and what this implies in political, social, and cultural spheres. This work proposes two models: the intersectional recruiting process and the ideological identity model of public relations. Both models were created using dialectical methodologies that understand public relations and social movements as processes of permanent contradictions between social conditions and ideology/discourse creation. This dissertation has real applications because it reveals how activist public relations can help the global struggle for social justice.

The diploma thesis offers results of a questionnaire-based public opinion survey which was a tool to achieve the objective of the thesis; i.e. suggestion of areas and principles of public relations in forestry. The literary section includes the information available from accessible sources on the field of public relations, the history of the terminology, public opinion, media, advertising and questionnaire research. Based on the results of the questionnaire survey an analysis of the given question of public opinion and public relations in forestry was established. The results are presented in the form of graphs and commented in relation to the data verified by the Ministry of Agriculture. Subsequently, solutions of the problems are proposed together with the standpoints for the communication and public relation principles in the forestry sector with the aim to improve communication with the public and influence positively the public opinion.

The aim of my thesis is to explore and organize the available information to the topic of Public Relations in the Theatre. The thesis is divided into two main parts - theoretical and practical. The theoretical part focuses primarily on the theoretical basis of Public Relations regarding the content of Public Relations as well as on communication as an integral part of PR, new trends, kinds of PR communication and means of communication. The insight into history and the cradle of PR - The United States of America is also included. The practical part introduces two particular theatres. The first is a representative of the public theatre - Švandovo theatre at Smíchov in Prague and the second is a limited liability company - Studio DVA situated also in the capital. The entire practical part is complemented by communication with the media and journalists, where my interest focused mainly on how the media and journalists evaluate the existing "theatre service", as well as what do theatres when communicating with the media right and what could be improved at the same time. The whole thesis continuously includes number of inspiring examples from practice either from history or the present.

One-Step, Two-Step, or Multi-Step Flow: The Role of Influencers in Information Processing and Dissemination in Online, Interest-Based Publics

This research examines information flow in online, interest-based networks to determine if existing models of information dissemination are adequate to describe the communication processes that occur in online publics. This study finds that a small number of primary influencers from within online communities are central to information collection, collation, and distribution in online, interest-based networks. This finding is inconsistent with one-step, two-step, and multi-step flow models, which privilege mass media as the central source of information. To more accurately depict online information flow in interest-based networks, this study introduces the radial model of information flow. Furthermore, the results of this study show that communication processes in online publics are best explained using a combination of the transmissive paradigm of communication, on which information flow models are based, and a ritual view of communication. This research also contributes to the ongoing development of the situational theory of publics by identifying organized publics as a key subgroup of active publics. Organized publics are networks of individuals within active publics who frequently and consistently communicate on a shared interest or concern. Organized publics form active online communication networks and prepare for advocacy related to a shared interest, making them of particular interest to public relations professionals. Using a case study approach, this dissertation uses online network analysis and qualitative cluster analysis to study the role of community influencers in information flow and cultural development within the online young adult cancer community. Instead of focusing exclusively on social media as channel for message dissemination, the results of this study indicate that successful relationship building can best by achieved by public relations practitioners who work to develop authentic presences in online communities. This research shows that embracing a participatory model of public relations that actively engages primary influencers in the planning and campaign implementation processes can promote authentic online presences.

Using Social Media to Address Preventable Crises: Focus Groups with Moms

This study examines how an organization can use social media to solve preventable crises. Focus groups with a total of 14 moms are conducted to discuss a controversial Motrin babywearing advertisement and how Johnson & Johnson should have responded to the social media backlash. The results are explored based on dialogic public relations theory and its five components. Additional insights regarding the use of different social media channels and culture jamming YouTube videos suggest theoretical and practical implications on organizational responses on social media during preventable crises. The study also explores how people with high- and low-context cultures might respond differently to offensive advertising.
