GEOLOGIC CONTROLS ON PLIO-PLEISTOCENE DRAINAGE EVOLUTION OF THE KENTUCKY RIVER IN CENTRAL KENTUCKY

The primary goal of this project is to develop a relative chronology of events in the geologic history of the Kentucky River, and to consider the geologic controls on those events. This study utilized published geologic and topographic data, as well as field observations and extensive compilation and comparison of digital data, to examine the fluvial record preserved in the Kentucky River valley in central Kentucky. Numerous fluvial features including abandoned paleovalleys, fluvial terraces and deposits, bedrock benches, and relict spillways between adjacent river valleys were identified during the course of the study. The morphology of the modern valley coincides with bedrock lithology and can be used to describe the distribution and preservation of modern and ancient fluvial deposits and features in the study area. Bedrock lithology is the dominant control on valley morphology and on the distribution and preservation of fluvial deposits and features in the study area. Some stream trends are inherited from the late Paleozoic drainage of the Alleghanian orogeny. More recent inheritance of valley morphology has resulted from the erosion of the river from one lithology down into another lithology with differing erosional susceptibility, thus superposing the meander patterns of the overlying valley style onto the underlying lithology. One major drainage reorganization related to a pre-Illinoisan glacial advance disrupted the northward flow of the Old Kentucky River toward the Teays River system and led to organization of the early Ohio River. This greatly reduced the distance to baselevel, and led to abrupt incision and a change in erosional style for the Kentucky River. The successful projection of valley morphologies on the basis of bedrock stratigraphy, the history of erosion suggested by fission track data and the results of this study, as well as soil thickness and development, all argue against the existence of a midto late-Tertiary, low-relief, regional erosional surface. This study instead hypothesizes that the apparent accordance of ridge-top elevations in the study area is a reflection of a fluvially downwasted late Paleozoic depositional surface.

Vegetation and climate of north anatolian and north aegean region since 7 Ma according to pollen analysis

This study concerns a long marine section (DSDP Site 380: Late Miocene to Present) and onshore exposed sections from the Late Miocene and/or Early Pliocene. The main target of this study is to reconstruct vegetation and climate in the North Anatolia and North Aegean region for the last 7 Ma. Two vegetation types were alternately dominant: thermophilous forests and open vegetations including Artemisia steppes. During the Late Miocene, most of the tropical and subtropical plants declined because of the climatic deterioration. However, some of them survived during the Late Pliocene, such as those which constituted coastal swamp forests (Glyptostrobus, Engelhardia, Sapotaceae, Nyssa) or composed deciduous mixed forests with mesothermic trees. Simultaneously, herbaceous assemblages became a prevalent vegetation component despite steppe elements (Artemisia, Ephedra, Hippophae rhamnoides) did not significantly develop. At 2.6 Ma, as a response to the onset of Arctic glaciations, subtropical elements rarefied despite some taxa persisted (Glyptostrobus, Engelhardia, Sapotaceae, Nyssa). In parallel, deciduous mixed forest assemblages composed of mesothermic trees (deciduous Quercus, Betula, Alnus, Liquidambar, Fagus, Carpinus, Tilia, Acer, Ulmus, Zelkova, Carya, Pterocarya) almost disappeared too while steppe environments strongly enlarged. Then, Artemisia steppic phases developed during longer temporal intervals than mesophilous tree phases all along the glacial-interglacial cycles (first with a period of 41 kyrs, then 100 kyrs). Since 1.8 Ma, herbaceous ecosystems including Artemisia steppes still continuously enlarged up today. Such an expansion of Artemisia steppes in the Ponto-Euxinian region was observed at the earliest Pliocene but their earliest settlement in Anatolia seems to have occurred in the Early Miocene. The development of the Artemisa steppes in Anatolia might result from the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau. Relictuous plants such as Carpinus orientalis, Pterocarya, Liquidambar orientalis, Zelkova persisted up today. This story can be explained by some influence of the Asian monsoon which reinforced as a result from the uplifted Tibetan Plateau.

Development of chironomid-based transfer functions for surface water quality parameters and temperature, and their application to Quaternary sediment records from the South Island, New Zealand

This thesis resulted in the development of robust chironomid-based transfer-functions for February mean air temperature and the concentration of total nitrogen (TN) in lake-water. The New Zealand transfer-functions for both variables compare favourably with chironomid-based transfer-functions for equivalent variables from elsewhere in the world, and diatom-based transfer-functions for nutrients and lake production from New Zealand. The application of the temperature and TN transfer-functions provided insight into New Zealand climate conditions during the last glacial and served as validation for the reconstructions. Chironomid-based Temperature reconstructions from lake silts preserved in the banks of Lyndon Stream indicate a maximum cooling of ca 4 ℃ between 26.6 and 24.5 ka BP, which is consistent with estimates based on beetles and plant macrofossils. A cooling of 4 ℃ is insufficient to explain the lack of canopy tree pollen in many New Zealand pollen records at this time. Other environmental parameters additional to temperature may have limited the expansion forest cover. The chironomid-based TN reconstructions infer a trend of rapidly deteriorating water-quality in a small doline in north-west Nelson, in the South Island of New Zealand following deforestation immediately surrounding the lake ca. 1970 AD. The overall trend and timing of eutrophication inferred from the chironomids was consistent with other biological proxies and actual observations of changes in lake water quality. The chironomid-based transfer-functions provide a valuable new tool for the study of longterm climate variability and improving our understanding of the response of aquatic ecosystems to long-term natural and human induced environmental change in New Zealand lakes. I have identified some possibilities for future research which should improve the performance of these transfer-functions. The improvement of the chironomid taxonomy and the expansion of the training set should be the highest priorities.

THE LATE QUATERNARY GEOLOGY AND ARCHAEOLOGY OF WHITEWATER DRAW, SOUTHEASTERN ARIZONA (COCHISE COUNTY, CULTURE, PLEISTOCENE EXTINCTIONS).

A complex late Quaternary alluvial sequence is exposed in Whitewater Draw arroyo, Cochise County, Arizona. The alluvial history is characterized by: (1) sand and gravel deposition in a through-flowing stream between 15,000-8,000 yr B.P. and 6,700-5,500 yr B.P. and (2) cycles of erosion and clay-and-silt deposition in large wet meadows or cienegas between 8,000-6,700 yr B.P. and 5,500 yr B.P.-historic period. Modern arroyo entrenchment began after A.D. 1885 and was largely completed before 1910. The alluvial sequence of the Douglas basin differs in timing, character, and number of degradational and aggradational events, with the exception of the arroyo cutting and filling episode between 6,700 and 5,500 yr B.P., when compared to the alluvial sequence of the adjacent San Pedro Valley and the generalized alluvial chronology for the West. Megafaunal extinction occurred in the Douglas basin no later than 10,400 yr B.P. as evidenced by the occurrence of articulated camel and mammoth remains in sediments of this age. Mammoth, horse, camel, and dire wolf remains from deposits dating 10,400 to 7,000 yr B.P. are in secondary contexts, redeposited from older units. Archaeological remains of the Cochise Culture occur in nearly all the Upper Quaternary deposits of Whitewater Draw. Artifacts of the Sulphur Spring phase, the earliest phase of the Cochise Culture, are found at four sites in Whitewater Draw and at the Lehner site, where they overlie the Clovis horizon. Ground-stone artifacts are the most common element of the Sulphur Spring artifact assemblage and indicate that the Douglas basin was the site of specialized plant gathering and processing. Flaked-stone artifacts are poorly represented and are primarily unifacially retouched flake tools but also include bifacially flaked projectile points. The Sulphur Spring phase dates from 8,000 to 10,000 yr B.P. and probably to 10,500 yr B.P. Evidence suggests that the Sulphur Spring people may have temporally overlapped with relict populations of Pleistocene megafauna during the onset of the Holocene. The Sulphur Spring and western San Dieguito I complex are considered to be temporal equivalents. The Cazador phase is no longer considered a valid phase of the Cochise Culture. Cazador artifacts at the type site occur in deposits equivalent in age to sediments containing Sulphur Spring remains.

Expanding the Role of Gas-Phase Methods in Structural Biology: Characterization of Protein Quaternary Structure and Dynamics by Tandem Mass Spectrometry and Ion Mobility

This dissertation presents efforts to expand the role of mass spectrometry (MS) in structural biology. Determination of quaternary structure of a protein complex has been hindered by limited fragmentation from collision-induced dissociation (CID). As an alternative, surface-induced dissociation (SID) was implemented for a quadrupole - time-of-flight instrument in the Wysocki laboratory. This research tested the hypothesis that SID should produce fragmentation reflective of subunit organization. Furthermore, ion mobility (IM) was used to prove the direct relationship between precursor conformation and observed dissociation patterns, and the relationship between activation and product ion conformation. The structure and dynamics of a dimeric small heat shock protein (sHSP) with no solved structure was investigated. The importance of N- and C-terminal domains for dimerization was determined, and the dimers were shown to exchange subunits. From exchange kinetics it is proposed that subunit exchange is unrelated to heat shock activity. SID was used to elucidate the subunit architecture of heterogeneous protein assemblies, including one previously solved protein structure and two formerly uncharacterized proteins. The heterohexamer toyocamycin nitrile hydratase dissociated into trimers, revealing the hexamer to be a dimer of trimers. The bacterial ribonuclease toxin:antitoxin tetramer was shown to have an antitoxin dimer at its core, with flanking individual toxin subunits. The examples presented here are the first clear proof that SID results can clearly indicate the substructure of a protein assembly.IM was used to study the conformation of precursor and product ions. A greater understanding of the relationship between precursor conformation and observed dissociation patterns was developed. Different charge states of a dodecameric sHSP were found to have significantly different conformations, which were directly reflected in SID spectra. IM comparison of CID and SID product ions showed that the same charge state of a product ion from either method has the same CCS. This suggests the product ion conformation is dependent upon ion charge state, and independent of activation method and collision energy. The cause and effect relationship between precursor conformation and MS/MS patterns, and activation and product ion conformation were clearly illustrated. Together, this body of research expands the role of MS for structural biology.

Long-term forest dynamics in high-altitude mountains of West-Central Mexico : the human and climate dimension in the Holocene

This thesis presents the results of a study to examine long-term forest dynamics in the high-altitude mountains of West-Central Mexico. Vegetation dynamics on temporal scales ranging from 10<sup>2</sup> to 10<sup>3</sup> years were reconstructed in order to provide essential information on the temporal variability of ecological patterns and processes in these forests; information that is of direct relevance for their current and future conservation and management strategies. Vegetation and palaeoecological methods undertaken included fossil and modern pollen analysis, vegetation surveys, microfossil charcoal analysis, magnetic susceptibility, inorganic and organic geochemistry, radiocarbon and <sup>210</sup>Pb dating. These were used to evaluate the long-term dynamics of three forest types; Pine Forest, Cloud Forest and Transitional Forest on timescales spanning the past 4260, 1340 and 1230 years respectively. The main drivers of change were climate and disturbance events induced by climate fluctuations, for example increased fire frequency. The reconstructed records indicate that the sequences from the Cloud Forest and the Transitional Forest spanned two wet and one dry climatic interval while the Pine Forest sequence spanned two dry and two wet periods. The impact of these climatic fluctuations was significant on all three forest types and resulted in variations in forest diversity, taxonomic turnover and successional change. The climate change episodes observed in these records seem to be the local manifestation of climatic events that were occurring throughout Mexico at these intervals in time. Human influences were evident in the three forests through the appearance of cultural taxa, particularly during the driest period (~ 1200 yr BP). There is little evidence from these records, however, to suggest a widespread clearance of the landscape for agriculture. Results from this study support the current conservation and management recommendations for Cloud Forest to exclude timber extraction, grazing and agricultural activities from this forest type. In the Pine Forest, human interventions such small-scale agriculture, prescribed burning and silvicultural actions are in agreement with the longterm pine ecology and as such, total exclusion of human activities is not necessary. For the Transitional Forest, results from this study suggest that there needs to be the establishment of adequate plans to reduce frequent fires to arrest the development of prone-to-fire taxa.

Mountain centered icefields in northern Scandinavia

Mountain centered glaciers have played a major role throughout the last three million years in the Scandinavian mountains. The climatic extremes, like the present warm interglacial or cold glacial maxima, are very short-lived compared to the periods of intermediate climate conditions, characterized by the persistence of mountain based glaciers and ice fields of regional size. These have persisted in the Scandinavian mountains for about 65% of the Quaternary. Mountain based glaciers thus had a profound impact on large-scale geomorphology, which is manifested in large-scale glacial landforms such as fjords, glacial lakes and U-shaped valleys in and close to the mountain range. Through a mapping of glacial landforms in the northern Scandinavian mountain range, in particular a striking set of lateral moraines, this thesis offers new insights into Weichselian stages predating the last glacial maximum. The aerial photograph mapping and field evidence yield evidence that these lateral moraines were overridden by glacier ice subsequent to their formation. The lateral moraines were dated using terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide techniques. Although the terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide signature of the moraines is inconclusive, an early Weichselian age is tentatively suggested through correlations with other landforms and stratigraphical archives in the region. The abundance and coherent spatial pattern of the lateral moraines also allow a spatial reconstruction of this ice field. The ice field was controlled by topography and had nunataks protruding also where it was thickest close to the elevation axis of the Scandinavian mountain range. Outlet glaciers discharged into the Norwegian fjords and major valleys in Sweden. The process by which mountain based glaciers grow into an ice sheet is a matter of debate. In this thesis, a feedback mechanism between debris on the ice surface and ice sheet growth is presented. In essence, the growth of glaciers and ice sheets may be accelerated by an abundance of debris in their ablation areas. This may occur when the debris cover on the glacier surface inhibits ablation, effectively increasing the glaciers mass balance. It is thus possible that a dirty ablation area may cause the glacier to advance further than a clean glacier under similar conditions. An ice free period of significant length allows soil production through weathering, frost shattering, and slope processes. As glaciers advance through this assemblage of sediments, significant amounts of debris end up on the surface due to both mass wastage and subglacial entrainment. Evidence that this chain of events may occur, is given by large expanses of hummocky moraine (local name Veiki moraine) in the northern Swedish lowlands. Because the Veiki moraine has been correlated with the first Weichselian advance following the Eemian, it implies a heavily debris charged ice sheet emanating from the mountain range and terminating in a stagnant fashion in the lowlands.

Reconstruction of the Late Pleistocene and Holocene geomorphology of northwest Calvert Island, British Columbia

This dissertation presents results from a multi-year interdisciplinary study of the Late Quaternary geomorphic history of northwest Calvert Island, British Columbia, Canada. There is a considerable knowledge gap in the region pertaining to Cordilleran ice cover and extent as well as landscape response to a uniquely stable relative sea-level history. The objective of this study was to reconstruct this regional landscape response to deglaciation including post-LGM ice cover and extent, relative sea-level changes, coastal landform development, and climate and ecological variance. Methods used to inform this reconstruction included airborne lidar, aerial photography interpretation, sedimentary stratigraphy and detailed sedimentology of samples from shovel pits and lake cores, surficial geology and geomorphic mapping, palaeoecological examinations, and the development of a geochronology using radiocarbon and optical dating. To assist with landscape reconstruction, a new method was developed and used to differentiate littoral and aeolian sands in sediment samples that range in age from Mid to Late Holocene by using modern reference samples. The method utilized a standard optical microscope paired with freely available software (ImageJ) to characterize grain shape parameters. The method was tested on nearly 6,000 sand grains from samples of known and hypothesized depositional settings and was able to correctly identify the depositional setting for 76% of the samples. After testing, the method was used to differentiate littoral and aeolian sands in a number of shovel pit, exposure, and core sediment samples to give context to stratigraphic and geomorphic interpretations. A short-lived Late Pleistocene re-advance of Cordilleran ice occurred in the study area, with radiocarbon ages indicating ice advanced to, and then retreated from, the western edge of Calvert Island between 14.2 and 13.8 ka cal BP, respectively. Sedimentological and palaeoecological information that suggests a cold climate and advancing/retreating glacier as well as lidar remote sensing and field-based geomorphic mapping of moraines in the region provide evidence of the re-advance. After ice retreated from the area, a broad suite of geomorphic landforms developed, including flood plains, iv aeolian dunes, beaches, spits, marshes, and tombolos. Coastal reworking was extensive, with progradation rates greater than 1 m a-1 occurring in some locations during the Late Holocene. These data provide the first evidence of a re-advance of the retreating ice sheet margin on the central coast of British Columbia, contribute an important methodology to advance Quaternary reconstructions, and give a unique account of the geomorphic development of a Pacific Northwest coastline that experienced little relative sea-level change over the Late Pleistocene and Holocene.
