Runberg, Stefan January 2008 (has links)
Då en AIS integreras med en radar ansåg samtliga nautiker att tillförlitligheten på båda systemen ökar.</p> / <p>The essay was based upon the active nautical officer’s attitude towards the use of AIS and radar from a navigational point of view. The aim was to get a view of how one of the newest electronic aids keeps well against one of the most and the well-tried instruments that are found onboard on today's commercial vessels. In order to receive an insight the nautical officer’s opinions interviews were conducted onboard a Swedish merchant vessel. The questions that were asked were the same about both AIS and radar in order to get comparable data. The conclusions that were drawn were that AIS as an independent system is not yet something that today's nautical officers trust. When the radar was taken up to discussion all the interviewees stated that the system had high reliability and that it is the second most reliable after their own eyes among the navigational aids. The reliability of both systems increases when an AIS is integrated with a radar according to the result.</p>

Development of a software defined radar environment simulator

Joubert, Anton Francois 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The development of a radar system is a complex process, requiring a substantial amount of testing. In general, these tests are performed using field trials. Such trials are expensive, and their exact conditions can never be repeated. A radar environment simulator allows for repeatable testing of the majority of a radar's functionality; however, most commercial products are not cost effective. In this thesis we investigate the various approaches to modelling targets and the littoral environment, and then develop a low-cost, largely software defined simulator. This simulator is capable of generating real-time video signals for a monopulse doppler tracking radar. The core simulation routines reside in an extensible software framework which is populated with simple target and clutter models for a prototype simulator. Closed loop tracking tests verify the operation of the prototype simulator.

The use of multistaic radar in reducing the impact of wind farm on civilian radar system

Al Mashhadani, Waleed January 2017 (has links)
The effects of wind farm installation on the conventional monostatic radar operation have been investigated in previous studies. The interference on radar operation is due to the complex scattering characteristics from the wind turbine structure. This research considers alternative approach for studying and potentially mitigating these negative impacts by adapting the multistatic radar system technique. This radar principle is well known and it is attracting research interest recently, but has not been applied in modelling the wind farm interference on multistatic radar detection and tracking of multiple targets. The research proposes two areas of novelties. The first area includes the simulation tool development of multistatic radar operation near a wind farm environment. The second area includes the adaptation of Range-Only target detection approach based on mathematical and/or statistical methods for target detection and tracking, such as Interval Analysis and Particle Filter. These methods have not been applied against such complex detection scenario of large number of targets within a wind farm environment. Range-Only target detection approach is often considered to achieve flexibility in design and reduction in cost and complexity of the radar system. However, this approach may require advanced signal processing techniques to effectively associate measurements from multiple sensors to estimate targets positions. This issue proved to be more challenging for the complex detection environment of a wind farm due to the increase in number of measurements from the complex radar scattering of each turbine. The research conducts a comparison between Interval Analysis and Particle Filter. The comparison is based on the performance of the two methods according to three aspects; number of real targets detected, number of ghost targets detected and the accuracy of the estimated detections. Different detection scenarios are considered for this comparison, such as single target detection, wind farm detection, and ultimately multiple targets at various elevations within a wind farm environment.
