The use of boron-containing amines for the amino alkylation of amides has been investigated in our laboratories with the aim of preparing compounds which could be used in neutron capture therapy. The purpose of this procedure is to achieve selective irradiation of a neoplactic growth by inducing radioactivity throughout that tissue. Although the results obtained in destroying tumors have not always been encouraging, they have been such - especially in cases not amenable to treatment by surgery or chemotherapy - that further research is warranted in order to develop drugs that can be used effectively in neutron capture therapy (Farr, Robertson & Stickley, 1954). This method of cancer treatment is still in the experimental stages of development, but it will, no doubt, gain the active interest of more clinical workers in the near future.

This study describes the technique and procedures used for the simultaneous determination
of elements involved in Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis, applied
to some geological samples as a sensitive and non-destructive tool. Using Isotopic
Neutron Source, the delayed gamma-rays emitted due to neutron capture have been
applied for the investigation of the elemental constituents and concentrations of major,
minor and trace elements in such samples.
The experimental investigations were carried out at the scale of researcher's practices
at the chosen site by measuring soil/rock nutrient contents from hydrologically
isolated farmland/site plots. Using detailed sampling procedures with special precautions,
against contaminations, to yield meaningful results, soil/rock samples have
been collected from selected areas of East Gojjam, pulverized, homogenized and prepared
for irradiation.
The samples were properly prepared together with known standards of potassium iodide
or cupric sulphate or arsenic trioxide (one /or both at a time), and simultaneously
irradiated in to isotopic neutron
ux in the same irradiation position. After activation,
the samples were subjected to gamma-ray spectrometry, using a high-purity germanium
detection system and computerized multichannel analyzer. The gamma-ray
spectra from the irradiated samples were measured by high resolution gamma-ray
spectrometry with a calibrated germanium detector. Both qualitative and quantitative
approach to data collection and analysis were used in order to gain insight into what should be acceptable to the community.
The results obtained have a practical interest in view of possible applications to the
technology of extraction and exploration of a variety of industrial, metallic, cement
minerals, and geothermal energy and coal deposits. These results tend to agree with
the lowest values reported in the literature, and the analytical precision is su cient
for the determination of the standard deviation of the distribution of all elements in
East Gojjam and these results were brie
y discussed within the text of this research
work.
In carrying out the analysis, the best and most convenient method being the Instrumental
and /non-destructive Neutron Activation Analysis was adopted, and NAA
has matured and attained analytical competence providing not only rapid, quantitative,
qualitative, simultaneous, multielement analysis but also crucial validation
support to programmes using di erent analytical techniques. This method of analysis
is generally multi-element and experimental conditions can be designed to be
nondestructive to the sample, and it plays a leading role among analytical techniques
in the eld of environmental research related to human, animal and plant
health.
Studies of di erent radionuclide and trace elements in the environmental samples are
very important for health physics, research and education. Many forms of elements
are possible in environmental samples which may be hazardous for human being, animals
and also plants. Most of them have the potential for both benefcial and harmful

Gastrointestinal involvement in familial amyloidosis with polyneuropathy : a clinical studySteen, Lars January 1983 (has links)
Familial Amyloidosis with Polyneuropathy was first recognized in Portugal and reported by Andrade in 1952. The disease is rare, but clustering of the patients has been reported from Portugal, Japan and northern Sweden. The gastrointestinal involvement in the Swedish form of the disease was studied in this investigation. In a study of 52 patients on their first admission 47 displayed gastrointestinal symptoms in the form of severely altered bowel habits (intractable diarrhea and/or constipation). Steatorrhea was found in 30 out of 52 patients (58%) and an impaired d-xylose absorption in 26 out of 50 patients (52%). The steatorrhea was correlated to the degree of peripheral polyneuropathy as expressed by EMG-score. No relation could be established between steatorrhea or impaired d-xylose absorption with oral lactose and glucose tolerance tests indicating an intact entero- cyte function. A follow-up study comprising 21 patients demonstrated that all patients ultimately developed gastrointestinal symptoms and that the prevalence of diarrhea became higher with the duration of the disease. In this study steatorrhea became more frequent and was significantly related to the duration. Bile acid breath test, fecal fat determination and d-xylose tests were performed on 13 patients. Six patients with results indicating an increased bile acid deconjugation in the small bowel were treated with antibiotics for one week, after which the results had returned to normal in all. Four out of five patients with impaired d-xylose absorption before treatment also returned to normal after antibiotics. Three patients with diarrhea 3-7 times daily were considerably relieved after treatment both concerning general well-being and bowel movements. The results give strong evidence that bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine is important in causing gastrointestinal dysfunction in this disease. A histopathological study of the small intestinal mucosa on 27 patients showed that 84 percent were amyloid positive. The degree of amyloid infiltration did not correlate to the symptomatic state, steatorrhea or impaired d-xylose absorption. The surface ultrastructure was normal in all of 21 investigated cases. Radiographical and endoscopi cal studies were performed on 43 patients altogether. Evidence of gastric stasis was found in 7 out of 37 patients investigated by means of gastric x-ray and in 7 out of 28 patients at gastroscopy. No characteristic radiological appearance of the disease could be shown in the small intestine, the colon or the gall bladder. Nine patients who were operated on with the construction of an enterostomy were reported. The cyclotron production of selected radionuclides using medium energy protonsVan der Meulen, N. P. (Nicolas Philip) 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Radiochemical research involving ion exchange chromatography is of paramount
importance to the future of radionuclide production at the Radionuclide Production
Group (RPG) of iThemba LABS. It is required for the production of high-activity
yields of radionuclides to effectively remove impurities and for the safety of the
operators performing such productions. The radiochemical separations of some new
products from their target material, as well as experiments to determine whether
production is viable, are described.
67Ga is currently being produced at the RPG and makes use of zinc targets. With the
production of ultra-pure 67Ga, it was necessary to remove any Fe(III) impurities from
the final product, such that it may be possible to label peptides with this product. The
use of Amberchrom CG161M for this purpose was found to be satisfactory.
Interest was shown in 88Y by an overseas company for the manufacture of sources.
While a method involving extraction of the radionuclide and the ion exchange thereof
using Chelex 100 chelating resin had been published, problems with the production
persisted. Three methods, using ion exchange chromatography, were devised to
produce the radionuclide, with two of them being adopted for production purposes.
Thick-target nuclear data have also recently been accumulated in collaboration with
colleagues from ATOMKI, Debrecen, Hungary.
There is a large demand for 82Sr for the manufacture of 82Sr/82Rb generators for
medical use. A method was developed to manufacture this radionuclide with thicker
(32 g) target material, bombarded in the Vertical Beam Target Station (VBTS), and to
separate 82Sr from its target material with the use of Purolite S950 chelating resin.
68Ge/68Ga generators are becoming increasingly important in the world of
radiopharmaceuticals. A project to develop a local generator was funded by the
Innovation Fund and research was performed to produce 68Ge, such that the generator
could be manufactured. This involved bombarding thicker Ga targets in the VBTS
and performing the chemical separation using AG MP-1 anion exchange resin. The final product was loaded onto generators, although tests performed on different
materials to the ones being marketed are also reported in this work.
A project was initiated to study the cluster radioactive decay of 223Ac via 14C and 15N
emission. To produce 223Ac for these observations, a Th target was bombarded. The
227Pa was separated from the target material using AG MP-1 macroporous anion
exchange resin and used as a source, which decayed to 223Ac. The chemical
separation and the drying of the final product onto a source plate were completed
within approximately 70 minutes from the end of bombardment. The work was
performed in collaboration with JINR, Russia, and University of Milan and INFN,
Italy.
133Ba has a half-life of over 10 years and is an expensive radionuclide to produce. It
has been used in medical and biological studies and there still appears to be a demand
for it. A method was devised, utilizing AG50W-X4 cation exchange resin, to separate
133Ba from its CsCl target material.
Agricultural specialists in the past have shown an interest in 28Mg, to determine the
uptake of the element in fruit. It has long been regarded by some of the local
researchers as an interesting project to investigate. It has been determined that the
product can be produced in reasonable quantities using LiCl target material, with ten
targets being bombarded in series using a 200 MeV proton beam delivered by the
Separated Sector Cyclotron. A method, involving the use of Purolite S950 chelating
resin, was devised to separate 28Mg from its target material. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Radiochemiese navorsing, wat ioonuitruiling chromatografie behels, is van uiterste
belang vir die toekoms van die produksie van radionukliede by die
Radionukliedproduksiegroep (RPG) van iThemba LABS. Dit is nodig vir die hoë
aktiwiteit opbrengs van radionuklied produkte om onsuiwerhede te verwyder en vir

Dik-skyf kerndata is ook versamel in samewerking met kollegas van ATOMKI,
Debrecen, Hongarye.
Daar is ‘n groot aanvraag vir 82Sr vir die vervaardiging van 82Sr/82Rb generators vir
mediese doeleindes. ‘n Metode is ontwikkel om die radionuklied te vervaardig van

Dit is al gebruik in mediese en biologiese studies en daar is deesdae ‘n redelike
aanvraag daarvoor. ‘n Metode is uitgewerk om 133Ba te skei van die CsCl
skyfmateriaal met die gebruik van AG50W-X4 katioonuitruiling hars.
Spesialiste in landboustudies het in die verlede belangstelling getoon in 28Mg. Dit
word gebruik om die absorpsie van dié element in vrugte te ondersoek. Die produk
kan vervaardig word met die gebruik van LiCl skyfmateriaal: tot soveel as tien skywe
(agter mekaar) word gebombardeer met ‘n 200 MeV protonbundel te iThemba LABS.
