Improved Receiver Characterization and Source Selection Technique for Microwave-Frequency Noise Measurement

Wang, Ying January 2008 (has links)
An accurate noise measurement is essential to a proper characterization of a noisy device. In the 1950s, the IRE first proposed the classical noise parameters for characterizing a noisy linear two-port network, and subsequently a measurement and extraction procedure. Since then, the task of accurately characterizing the parameters has always been challenging due to the sensitive nature of the noise parameters. This is especially so for an on-wafer device noise measurement, as opposed to that of a packaged device, due to various factors such as the lower noise level and losses in the signal path. Combined with the downscaling of the MOSFET technology in recent decades, which also improved the device's noise performance, they make noise measurement and characterization become even more difficult. A typical noise measurement starts with the calibration or characterization of the measurement system. This step is as important as the measurement itself in terms of the ultimate accuracy of the results. This thesis presents a noise receiver characterization method which improves upon existing methods by accurately taking into account the different reflection coefficient of the noise source between its hot and cold states. The improvement allows more precise determination of the receiver characterizations. Numerous studies have investigated the effect of the choice of the source terminations on the noise measurement results. These studies often provided contradicting suggestions on the selection techniques. In the thesis, a selection technique is proposed that allows quick determination of desirable terminations. Analyses using real measurement data on a 65 nm n-type MOSFET show that the proposed technique is able to provide terminations that yield noise parameters with smaller uncertainties relative to other terminations. / Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

Receiver Implementations for a CDMA Cellular System

Aliftiras, George 01 July 1996 (has links)
The communications industry is experiencing an explosion in the demand for personal communications services (PCS). Several digital technologies have been proposed to replace overburdened analog systems. One system that has gained increasing popularity in North America is a 1.25 MHz Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) system (IS-95). In CDMA systems, multiple access interference limits the capacity of any system using conventional single user correlation or matched filter receivers. Previous research has shown that multiuser detection receivers that employ interference cancellation techniques can significantly improve the capacity of a CDMA system. This thesis studies two such structures: the successive interference cancellation scheme and the parallel interference cancellation scheme. These multiuser receivers are integrated into an IS-95 compatible receiver model which is simulated in software. This thesis develops simulation software that simulates IS-95 with conventional and multiuser receivers in multipath channels and when near-far conditions exist. Simulation results present the robustness of multiuser receivers to near-far in a practical system. In addition to multiuser implemenations, quantization effects from finite bit analog to digital converters (ADC) in CDMA systems will also be simulated. / Master of Science

An ECA-Based ZigBee Receiver

Zhang, Chen 26 March 2008 (has links)
Element CXI's Elemental Computing Array (ECA) delivers faster reconfiguration time and higher computational density than Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) with similar computational power. It provides higher computational power than Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) with similar power consumption and price. It also utilizes a library-based graphical development environment promoting ease of use and fast development. In this thesis, the design and implementation of a ZigBee receiver on an Element CXI ECA-64 platform is presented. The ZigBee receiver is evaluated through simulations and implementation on an ECA device. During the design and implementation of the ZigBee receiver, some design experience and tips are concluded. The design methodology on the ECA is studied in detail to assure the implementation's correctness, since the methodology of the ECA is different from that of other platforms. / Master of Science

GPS HIGH DYNAMIC RECEIVER TRACKING DEMONSTRATION RESULTS

Hurd, William J., Statman, Joseph I., Vilnrotter, Victor A. 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 28-31, 1985 / Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada / Demonstration results are presented for a high dynamic GPS receiver. The receiver tested is a breadboard unit capable of tracking one simulated satellite signal in pseudorange and range rate. The receiver makes approximate maximum likelihood estimates of pseudorange and range rate each 20 ms, and tracks these observables using a third order filter with a time constant of 0.14 s. Carrier phase is not tracked, which eliminates the typical failure mode of loss of carrier lock associated with PLLs at high dynamics. The receiver tracks with pseudorange lag errors of under 0.06 m when subjected to simulated 50 g turns with 40 g/s peak jerk. Pseudorange errors due to receiver noise alone are approximately 0.6 m rms at a carrier power to noise spectral density ratio of 34 dB-Hz. The tracking threshold SNR is approximately 28 dB-Hz, which provides 12 dB margin relative to the 40 dB-Hz that occurs with minimum specified satellite signal strength, 3.5 dB system noise figure, and 0 dBi antenna gain.

HIGH DYNAMIC GPS UNAIDED PSEUDORANGE TRACKING DEMONSTRATION

Hurd, William J., Statman, Joseph I. 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 22-25, 1984 / Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada / A breadboard high dynamic GPS receiver capable of pseudorange tracking with accelerations of 50 g or higher without inertial aiding is presented. The receiver uses cross correlation followed by fast Fourier transformation to approximate maximum likelihood estimation of pseudorange and range rate, with no phase or delay locked loops. The breadboard system consists of a one channel receiver and a high dynamics signal simulator. A planned demonstration of the receiver is described and anticipated results are presented showing pseudorange lag errors of under 10 m with acceleration of 50 g.

Aiming strategies for small central receiver systems

Grobler, Annemarie 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Concentrating solar power as a sustainable energy technology is considered favourable in South Africa due to the high solar resource and the integration possibilities with the current electricity grid. Considering the various concentrating solar power technologies, the central receiver system is thought to be one of the most promising due to its high capacity factor and cost-efficient thermal storage capabilities. These thermal systems are able to reach high temperatures (more than 1000°C have been shown), and to obtain such temperatures, a high solar flux is required. This is achievable by aiming all of the heliostats at the centre of the target. High flux gradients over the receiver surface area and between the outer and inner surfaces of the receiver material can exist. These thermal gradients account for differences in temperatures on the receiver which result in thermal stresses leading to elastic and potentially plastic deformation of the material. To eradicate the thermal stresses, the aim points of the heliostats can be managed such that the flux density distribution over the receiver aperture is decreased and homogenised. The primary objective of this thesis is to develop an aiming strategy specifically for small experimental heliostat fields. To reach this objective, a simulation platform was developed to model any heliostat field and receiver, and an analysis was conducted to compare analytical flux prediction methods to ray tracing. At high incidence angles of between 30° and 60°, the standard deviations of the circular Gaussian flux approximation methods were found to differ between approximately 10 % and 30 % from the ray traced results. A novel method, the Gaussian mixture model, was suggested and deviated less than 4 % from the ray traced results when considering the standard deviation of the flux profile. Two basic aiming strategies were developed using the Tabu search and Genetic algorithm optimisation methods. These two strategies make use of approximate method of flux prediction. Experiments were conducted to investigate static aiming strategies on physical systems and to identify factors that could have an effect on the experimental results. Finally a method of implementing the aiming strategy on a dynamic system was proposed. By implementing both optimisation methods to complement each other, a new aiming strategy was developed that proved to provide better homogenisation of the flux distribution than either of the two methods alone. The accuracy of the final predicted flux distribution was improved by using the Gaussian mixture model as the flux distribution approximation method.

Development of a Subminiature Enhanced Flight Termination Receiver

Woodard, Tracy, Vetter, Jeff, Rodzinak, Jason 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2011 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Seventh Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 24-27, 2011 / Bally's Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Nevada / As the size of missiles and UAVs shrink, so does the volume available for the Flight Termination System (FTS). Small, light weight FTS systems open up applications not possible with the larger and heavier conventional FTS systems. This paper presents a novel approach for the design, implementation and test of a subminiature Flight Terminate System Receiver for use in the Subminiature Flight Safety System (SFSS). This receiver implements the new digital-based Enhanced Flight Termination System (EFTS) protocol, while maintaining a volume of less than 1 cubic inch with power consumption of less than 2 watts. Combining all of the necessary functionality into a small package while meeting the rigorous requirements of the Range Commanders Council (RCC) specifications (EMI, vibration and shock) presented significant challenges. The Subminiature Enhanced Flight Termination Receiver used in the SFSS has been named the "SEFTR".

Der obere Mantel in der Eifel-Region untersucht mit der Receiver Function Methode / The upper mantle in the region of the Eifel, Germany, analyzed with the receiver function method

Budweg, Martin January 2002 (has links)
The upper mantle in the region of the Eifel, Germany, analyzed with the <i>receiver function</i> method: <br /> The Eifel is the youngest volcanic area of Central Europe. The last eruption occurred approximately 11000 years ago. Little is known about the deep origin and the mechanism responsible for the Eifel volcanic activity. Earthquake activity indicates that the Eifel is one of the most geodynamically active areas of Central Europe. <br /> In this work the <i>receiver function</i> method is used to investigate the upper mantle structure beneath the Eifel. Data from 96 teleseismic events (mb > 5.2) that were recorded by both permanent stations and a temporary network of 33 broadband and 129 short period stations had been analyzed. The temporary network was operating from November 1997 till June 1998 and covered an area of approximately 400x250 km² centered on the Eifel volcanic fields. <br /> The <i>receiver function</i> analysis reveals a clear image of the Moho and the mantle discontinuities at 410 km and 660 km depth. Average Moho depth is approximately 30 km and it shows little variation over the extent of the network. The observed variations of converted waveforms are possibly caused by lateral variations in crustal structure, which could not resolved by it <i>receiver functions</i>. Inversions of data and migrated it receiver functions from stations of the central Eifel array suggest that a low velocity zone is present at about 60 to 90 km depth in the western Eifel region. There are also indications for a high velocity zone around 200 km depth, perhaps caused by dehydration of the rising plume material. The results suggest that P-to-S conversions from the 410-km discontinuity arrive later than in the IASP91 reference model. The migrated data show a depression of the 410 km discontinuity of about 20 km, which correspond to an increase of temperature of about 140° Celsius. The 660 km discontinuity seems to be unaffected. This indicates that no mantel material rises up from directly below the 660 km discontinuity in the Eifel region or the Eifel-Plume has its origin within the transition zone.

Subduction zone structure along Sumatra from receiver functions

Lipke, Katrin, Krüger, Frank, Rößler, Dirk January 2008 (has links)
Receiver functions are a good tool to investigate the seismotectonic structure beneath the a seismic station. In this study we apply the method to stations situated on or near Sumatra to find constraints on a more detailed velocity model which should improve earthquake localisation. We estimate shallow Moho-depths (~ 21 km) close to the trench and depths of ~30 km at greater distances. First evidences for the dip direction of the slab of ~60° are provided. Receiver functions were calculated for 20 stations for altogether 110 earthquakes in the distance range between 30° and 95° from the receiver. However the number of receiver functions per station is strongly variable as it depends on the installation date, the signal-to-noise-ratio of the station and the reliability of the acquisition.

Digitally assisted test methodology for RF receivers

Zeidan, Mohamad A. 25 February 2013 (has links)
Addressing the high cost of RF instrumentation has motivated significant research activity, where researchers have proposed various non-standard and alternative test methods of RF circuits to mitigate high test cost. This dissertation describes a test methodology for RF receivers, whereby simple digital circuits comprise the core of the otherwise complex and costly broadband RF/analog signal generation. The proposed test methodology relies on a digital clock, commonly available to RF ICs for the purpose of digital communication, to generate the broadband RF stimulus needed for the receiver analog tests. The test method also utilizes commonly available baseband signal digitization (on-chip or off-chip) to acquire the baseband signal. It then relies on sophisticated, but inexpensive, signal processing to extract and compute standard RF performance parameters, like gain, noise figure (NF), and input-referred third-order intercept point (IIP3). In addition, the test method can extract important baseband (BB) parameters like the BB filter 3 dB bandwidth (BW), filter rejection at specific BB frequencies, or the BB filter profile. The motivation behind the proposed test methodology can be categorized as both architectural and cost reduction-oriented. Architecturally, the proposed test method aims at shifting the complexity involved in the test of RF receivers from the hardware (input) RF signal generation side to the signal processing done on the (output) baseband side. The process of shifting the complexity from the hardware design side to the signal processing side involves significant complex and sophisticated analysis, which is part of this dissertation. Cost-wise, the proposed test methodology enables the use of digital automatic test equipment (ATE) with limited baseband capability, instead of the full standard RF testers. Such a step reduces the initial tester cost and impacts the cost/sec figure spent on test for the life of the ATE tester, thus leading to test cost reduction. / text
