Disambiguating Multiple Links in Historical Record Linkage

Richards, Laura 30 August 2013 (has links)
Historians and social scientists are very interested in longitudinal data created from historical sources as the longitudinal data creates opportunities for studying people’s lives over time. However, its generation is a challenging problem since historical sources do not have personal identifiers. At the University of Guelph, the People-in-Motion group have currently constructed a record linkage system to link the 1871 Canadian census to the 1881 Canadian census. In this thesis, we discuss one aspect of linking historical census data, the problem of disambiguating multiple links that are created at the linkage step. We show that the disambiguating techniques explored in this thesis improve upon the linkage rate of the People-in-Motion’s system, while maintaining a false positive rate no greater than 5%.

An investigation into digital vaccination records for minors in Gauteng, South Africa

Moonsamy, Wesley 09 July 2021 (has links)
The design and development of “e-Vaccination” applications are not extensively researched within developing economies, in part because of the difficulty in gaining access to government officials and medical experts. Vaccination cards have been used to keep track of minors’ immunisation records in South Africa for over 30 years. The South African government is moving towards the use of electronic systems for the storage of such information. South Africa has a clearly defined electronic health strategy, which is to utilise information and communications technologies in healthcare to inter alia, engage in medical research, promote health education, monitoring of diseases and tracking public health. Supporting this strategy means digitising current paper-based systems. The result would be information that can be stored safely, backed up and analysed more easily than paper-based journals, documents and vaccination cards. The purpose of this research is to develop a better understanding of key stakeholders’ perceptions to the replacement of paper-based vaccination cards with an electronic system. This is important because digital records can be considered as a more effective method of storing vaccination data. This study is quantitative in nature and primary data in the form of Likert scale questionnaires were collected from 118 key stakeholders being nurses, doctors, parents and school administration staff. The Likert scale questionnaire data was analysed using the following statistical techniques: Cronbach Alpha Test, Chi-Square Test, Analysis of Variance Test and Principle Component Analysis. The analysis provided a deeper understanding of the key stakeholder’s perceptions to the use of e-Vaccination applications. e-Vaccination applications are affected by user friendliness of the application, the graphical design of the application, practicality of the application, user experience of the application as well as the usability of the application. The practical implications of this research on e-Vaccination applications is that designers, developers, policymakers and government have a deeper understanding of nurses, doctors, parents and school administration staff perceptions to the use of e-Vaccination. / School of Computing

Evaluation of oral fluoroquinolone administration before and after implementation of electronic prepared medication administration record

Malina, Kevin January 2012 (has links)
Class of 2012 Abstract / Specific Aims: Determine the incidence of scheduled co-administration times in handwritten (paper) and electronic prepared medication administration records of oral ciprofloxacin and oral moxifloxacin with interacting substances that can affect fluoroquinolone gastrointestinal absorption. Also, determine the incidence of actual co-administration of oral ciprofloxacin and moxifloxacin with interacting substances that can affect fluoroquinolone gastrointestinal absorption with electronic and handwritten prepared medication administration records. Methods: Retrospective data was obtained by a chart review of patients from an academic medical center for a one month period before (May 2010) and after (August 2010) implementation of an electronic prepared medical administration record system. The scheduled time and actual time given for all fluoroquinolone antibiotics, as well as all possible interacting substances, were recorded. Main Results: A total of 99 subjects were included in this study (36 paper and 63 electronic). There was no statistical difference (p=0.47) between the percentage of scheduling errors for the electronic prepared medication administration records, 25.3%, compared to the paper medication administration records, 22.1%. However, there was a decrease in the percentage of actual co-administrations of fluoroquinolones with interacting substances for the electronic prepared MARs compared to paper prepared medication administration records; 22.3% and 32.1% respectfully (p=0.03). Conclusions: After implementing electronic prepared medication administration records at an academic institution, co-administration errors went down even though the amount of scheduling errors did not decrease.

Record review of patients with brain abscess and empyema.

Schwenke, Katherine Linda 22 January 2010 (has links)
Thesis (M.Sc.(O.T.), Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, 2009 / Studies of patients presenting with brain abscess (BA) and Empyema are not routinely focused on occupational therapy (OT). There is a paucity of literature on deficits other than hemiplegia. Aims of this study were to determine the relationship between BA, Empyema, motor and other deficits and whether an OT intervention protocol is needed. Record review was used to establish clinical presentation trends. Hemiplegia was the most common motor deficit and the majority scored below the norm on the Beery- Buktenika Developmental Test of Visual Motor Integration (VMI). Patients with Brain Abscess generally had more significant deficits than those with Empyema for both motor and process deficits. Part B followed up a small sample (n=8) which indicated clinical improvement on the VMI test with the score on the supplemental test of motor coordination remaining a concern. Occupational Therapy is recommended to address these issues based on the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework-II.

A study of an independent record company's operation in Taiwan with system dynamics

Lee, Wei-I 09 September 2008 (has links)
For many years, independent record companies have been facing the conflict between authentic and commercial. Insisting on their own principles and following them in the real world is the hardest part for most independent productions. Therefore, this research studies an independent record company in Taiwan using a system dynamics approach, to get a deeper understanding of how an independent record company operates, to find out how the business is affected by its own beliefs, and to simulate the policies with the system dynamics model. According to the research the following conclusions were reached: 1. The decisions and the knowledge of the founder are key to maintaining the business model of the independent record company. 2. Main income of the indicated companies mostly comes from being a contractor of concerts and other related cultural activities. It shows the evolution of a new business pattern. 3. Simulation of lower quality products leads the customer base to dwindle and lose faith in the label. 4. The income of the company is based on the structure of the independent production, so if the company wants to fix its financial problems, it should re-arrange the whole revenue and expenditure model, or it will result in side effects, even leading company into debt.
