Determining the demand for recreational sport at a university / Natasha PetersPeters, Natasha January 2014 (has links)
This mini-dissertation deals with the market demand for campus recreation at the North-West University’s (NWU) Potchefstroom Campus. The market demand refers to the proposed needs for recreation activities on-campus among fulltime undergraduate students studying at the Potchefstroom Campus. For the purpose of the study, undergraduate students (n = 327) were requested to complete a questionnaire containing questions related to reasons for recreational sport participation and constraints hindering participation, as identified by literature. The study was undertaken by using historic, fulltime first- to third-year students studying at the Potchefstroom Campus of the NWU. Participants consisted of a diverse group residing both on-campus and off-campus and also from different faculties, with the exclusion of the Faculties of Law and Theology.
Data collected by means of questionnaires was organised and analysed by the Statistical Consultation Services of the NWU (Potchefstroom Campus). Descriptive statistics were used to determine frequencies. It was found that the majority of students participate in the seven major sport codes of the university, and in particular hockey and soccer, followed by tennis and athletics. Even though participation figures for rugby are lower than those for the other seven major sport codes, the participation frequencies by the students are the highest of the major sport codes. The highest additional sport codes that students participated in are cycling, squash, golf, swimming and table tennis. The additional sport codes are predominantly participated in either through hostel teams or with private clubs.
It was found that there are five main reasons why students participate in recreational sport, namely for the purpose of challenge and enjoyment, for recognition and achievement, to socialise, for health and physical wellness and to relieve stress. From the mean scores, it appears that the students’ primary reasons for participating in recreational sports are recognition and achievement and to a lesser degree for health and wellness. The study found participation constraints, namely lack of knowledge, lack of interest, individual psychological aspects and accessibility or financial constraints. The constraint experienced most by the students, according to the mean scores, is lack of knowledge about recreational sport. Regarding the students’ recreational sport needs, hockey was mentioned the most, followed by netball, cycling,
swimming, tennis and squash. Students prefer to participate in the above mentioned
recreational sport activities with hostel teams, whereas very few students prefer to
participate on their own.
The first recommendation would be to include student development, health and
wellness as key components in the current vision of NWU sport. It is also
recommended that the NWU revise the information obtained from the Marketing
Department regarding the recruitment of future students. Valuable knowledge could be
obtained regarding which sports the students were exposed to during their school years
and to adjust the additional sport codes accordingly. The third recommendation is the
introduction of leisure education during the orientation programme for first-year
students. Leisure education will provide the students with the skills to prepare for future
events peculiar to campus life. Fourthly it is recommended that, due to the increase in
demand for multi-gender sport, the university shall focus on marketing and public
awareness of sports such as women’s cricket and rugby for women. The last
recommendation refers to the need for more information regarding the management of
facilities and grounds. The implementation of a web-based system could increase
productivity and may decrease the pressure placed on the utilisation of facilities and

Hedonic price analysis of the internet recreational equine marketFreeborn, Jennifer January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Agricultural Economics / Ted C. Schroeder / Hedonic pricing models have long been used to evaluate prices in high-end segments of the equine industry. However, the lower end markets, including most of the recreational and pleasure horses, have yet to be studied in the economic literature. This study evaluates characteristics affecting the price of recreational horses advertised online, and provides a framework for future market studies on various segments of the equine industry. Data were collected in both the spring and fall of 2008, in addition to a survey being conducted in the fall to collect more accurate pricing information. Three different functional forms were used and their outcomes discussed to determine which one best fit the data. Results show that the semi-log functional form appeared to best fit the data. Characteristics that consistently showed statistical significance included the horse being advertised using a photo ad, the age of the horse, and whether or not the horse was registered. Gender variables and the state which the horse was sold from showed statistical significance in most of the models; although the variables denoting breed were statistically significant as a group, no model consistently found statistical significance in any of the variables individually. Color characteristics did not demonstrate statistical significance consistently in any model.
Finally, suggestions for future research are discussed. Data issues could be avoided with larger or more specific data sets; various data sources could be examined or created such as live equine auctions; regions could be examined by show or rodeo circuit instead of by state. There are political issues in the industry that need to be addressed, but a lack of available data needs to be examined and corrected before many issues can be thoroughly examined. The equine industry is often overlooked in economic literature and is a multi-billion dollar agricultural industry which deals with legislative and taxation issues just like the rest of the agricultural world and is deserving of attention.

Management of water quality is generally based on physically-based equations or hypotheses describing the behaviour of water bodies. In recent years models built on the basis of the availability of larger amounts of collected data are gaining popularity. This modelling approach can be called data driven modelling. Observational data represent specific knowledge, whereas a hypothesis represents a generalization of this knowledge that implies and characterizes all such observational data. Traditionally deterministic numerical models have been used for predicting flow and water quality processes in inland and coastal basins. These models generally take a long time to run and cannot be used as on-line decision support tools, thereby enabling imminent threats to public health risk and flooding etc. to be predicted. In contrast, Data driven models are data intensive and there are some limitations in this approach. The extrapolation capability of data driven methods are a matter of conjecture. Furthermore, the extensive data required for building a data driven model can be time and resource consuming or for the case predicting the impact of a future development then the data is unlikely to exist. The main objective of the study was to develop an integrated approach for rapid prediction of bathing water quality in estuarine and coastal waters. Faecal Coliforms (FC) were used as a water quality indicator and two of the most popular data mining techniques, namely, Genetic Programming (GP) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were used to predict the FC levels in a pilot basin. In order to provide enough data for training and testing the neural networks, a calibrated hydrodynamic and water quality model was used to generate input data for the neural networks. A novel non-linear data analysis technique, called the Gamma Test, was used to determine the data noise level and the number of data points required for developing smooth neural network models. Details are given of the data driven models, numerical models and the Gamma Test. Details are also given of a series experiments being undertaken to test data driven model performance for a different number of input parameters and time lags. The response time of the receiving water quality to the input boundary conditions obtained from the hydrodynamic model has been shown to be a useful knowledge for developing accurate and efficient neural networks. It is known that a natural phenomenon like bacterial decay is affected by a whole host of parameters which can not be captured accurately using solely the deterministic models. Therefore, the data-driven approach has been investigated using field survey data collected in Cardiff Bay to investigate the relationship between bacterial decay and other parameters. Both of the GP and ANN models gave similar, if not better, predictions of the field data in comparison with the deterministic model, with the added benefit of almost instant prediction of the bacterial levels for this recreational water body. The models have also been investigated using idealised and controlled laboratory data for the velocity distributions along compound channel reaches with idealised rods have located on the floodplain to replicate large vegetation (such as mangrove trees).

The recreational use of the Colorado River within
the Grand Canyon National Park and National Monument
increased on the order of 60 to 70 per cent during each
year of the interval 1967 to 1970. Consequently, the U. S.
National Park Service instituted user limits to protect
and preserve the area commencing with the 1971 season.
This limit was established with limited data on the users
of the river or about their perceptions of the trip experience.
A need existed to collect and analyze this type of
data, and to suggest possible management alternatives.
This study used a mailed questionnaire to a random
sample of past participants in order to collect basic
socio-economic data. The analysis was based on a 65%
response rate, and consisted of individual question tabulation
and multivariate data -cluster analysis.
The data show background characteristics of the
participants, reasons for taking the trip, reactions to
the experience, perceptions of problems associated with
the trips, reactions to crowded conditions, and needs for
regulatory policy concerning user intensities.

RECREATIONAL MUSIC-MAKING IN MUSIC PEDAGOGY: A MANIFESTO FOR CHANGEWood, Brandon Keith 01 January 2012 (has links)
The arts are an essential part of any student’s well rounded education. The future of music in education will depend on its ability to deliver relevant, effective, and measurable outcomes. However, the expectations and performance nature of traditional curricula often foster a sense of musical elitism and ostracizes students that are solely interested in music as a recreational outlet. Incorporating recreational music-making into education can provide opportunities for students to experience self-expression, creativity, social connection, and enjoyment. These values will not only enhance their education, but also lead to acquired skills for use in all areas of their lives. Activities such as drum circles, for example, break down the musical elitism that has been reenforced through barriers of economy (purchasing instruments), technique (learning a required skill set), and language (learning to read music).
This document will establish a case for recreational music-making in education through examination of the role of music education, the concept of recreational musicmaking, and the numerous health and wellness benefits associated with recreational music-making. Included will be a discussion of elementary, secondary, and higher education music curricula. Additionally, the importance of using percussion instruments will be established along with explanations of basic techniques. Finally, a discourse about the language barrier in music is included. The intended results of this document include creating an educated audience for music professionals, a larger presence of music-making in society, music advocacy and support, improved creativity and self-expression for professional and amateur musicians, strengthened community connections, and an overall improvement in health and well-being for music participants.
