Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / Bibliography / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates if and how the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) uses its websites to create a public sphere. Since the end of apartheid this church and its media had to adapt to the changing environment in South Africa, particularly in its increasing use of the new media to involve believers and non-believers.
Because of the internet’s potential to connect people from all over the world and its interactivity, scholars assert that the internet can create a public sphere. Habermas’ idea of the public sphere, a conceptual space where critical public discourse takes place and anyone can participate, forms the theoretical underpinning for this study. This theory, however, is slightly adapted by arguing that conflict – within bounds – is also part of the communication process within the public sphere.
This study focuses on seven active websites of the DRC in order to examine its relation to public theology from a critical cultural perspective. The ideals of public theology closely relates to that of the public sphere. These ideals are a public debate on issues relating to the common good, which are discussed from a religious stance. A central view is that regulation can hinder the forming of a public sphere. Thus the nature and level of regulation on the church’s websites are examined. The nature of interaction between users and content on websites is also studied. This study combines qualitative and quantitative methods, including semi structured interviews, questionnaires, content analysis and systematic observation.
The study found that Kerkbode’s Facebookpage facilitates a lively forum for debate on issues that advances the public sphere. The Facebookpage of the DRC has the potential to create such debates. On both these websites and Kerkbode-online and NG Kerk-online, regulation on midlevel curbs this potential. Other obstacles for creating a public sphere that was identified on the DRC’s websites, were personal insults, too narrow focus on internal church affairs and low participation in topics that could advance the public sphere.

An assessment of the perception of the role of the Christian religious leader in the political process: the case of the Nelson Mandela Bay MunicipalityTerblanche, Thomas Frank January 2017 (has links)
The Church and clergy, during Apartheid played a significant role in the South African political process. It was possible to divide the church into three distinct groups, pro-government, anti-government and neutral churches and clergy. The Dutch Reformed Church because of its close association to the National Party was often dubbed the “National Party of Prayer.” They played an important role in providing moral legitimacy for the regime. On the other hand, church leaders including Allan Boesak and Desmond Tutu were synonymous in their fight against apartheid. The Church still plays a significant role in a democratic South Africa. By virtue of Stats SA 2011 which states that just under eighty percent of South Africans have Christian affliations. However, democratic South Africa has secular constitution which clearly indicates the separation between church and government. Clergy find themselves in an ambiguous situation in a ‘secular state.’ What exactly is the broader role of the Church and in particular clergy in democratic ‘secular’ South Africa? The ambiguity is also fuelled by politicians who often request clergy’s participation in the political process and on other occasions state that clergy should keep to “church business” Part of this enquiry is be answered by asking clergy what they believe their role is. In 2014 a selection of Christian leaders in the Nelson Mandela Bay area decried the governance in the NMBM and South Africa in general. It is to be seen as awakening of clergy in the political process. The objectives of the study are as follows: to look at how Christian religious leaders construct their role in a post-apartheid context with a specific focus on the NMBM, to capture the views of government and political parties1 on what role the Church should play in post-apartheid South Africa, A comparative thematic analysis to determine if there are any similarities or differences in how the Church perceives their political role vis-à-vis the perception of government.

Text in Afrikaans / Individuals can be deemed weaklings within the family relations by social discourse that claims that the value of a human being is measured by his productivity and mobility. Parkinson's disease in its turn has a paralysing effect on the mobility of the physical body. The above-mentioned social discourse on the one hand and Parkinson's disease on the other hand become a dominant story that "paralyses" the individual.
During research someone who has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, related how she wrote an alternative story. This person, who practices a reformed spirituality, wrote an alternative story by using Christian faith language, which, in the end, halted the marginalising effect of Parkinson's disease.
In this study the concerned participant had the opportunity to share her genuine experiences and her application of Christian language of faith to manage Parkinson's disease. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M. Th.

Missiological cell group praxis in the local churchVan der Merwe, Pieter Retief 11 1900 (has links)
The contention of this study is that missiological cell group praxis is an appropriate vehicle to mobilize the local church for world evangelization - centrifugally reaching from "Jerusalem" and "Judea and Samaria" to the "ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). Methodologically it follows the pastoral circle of Holland & Henriot and investigates the missiological praxis of various small faith communities. The principles of the cosmological framework of Calvisnism (Kuyper, Dooyeweerd) are brought to bear on the missionary endeavours of the local church, with reference to the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa. It argues for a missiologically integrated Cell Church, based on a definition of mission and evangelism, which is aimed at overcoming the fragmented missiological situation in mainline churches. This study argues that these small groups function as the basic cells of the local and universal Church, and shows how these communities come into existence and function as missiological outreach groups. / Christian Spirituality Church History and Missiology / M. Praxis pietatis as dieptedimensie van kommunikatiewe geloofshandelingePienaar, Jan Adriaan 04 1900 (has links)
omskryf.
This study intends to describe a spirituality that can function as intention and motivation for
communicative faith acts.
The operational scientific approach to Practical Theology is discussed briefly. It is shown that
acts are not only existential behaviour but has an underlying spirituality as intention and
motivation.
Different perspectives on spirituality are explored and the term praxis pietatis is chosen
describe spirituality.
The creation-recreation theme is used to define a theological basis for praxis pietatis. The
praxis is intentional communicative acts that stem from the imperative. It is made possible
by the indicative of the self-revelation of God to mankind.
The redemption of God as existential knowledge is made possible by the exercising of faith
by the new man. Through the pietatis this knowledge is integrated into the daily life - with
the eye upon the resurrection. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M. Th. (Praktiese Teologie)

The evaluation of Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa in relation to the three marks of the church : discipline in the Southern SynodPitikoe, Jurie Billy 02 1900 (has links)
Christian life today has been influenced by countless influences from the external
world. Although these external factors have a significant bearing on the church of
Christ, the greatest challenge however manifests itself from within the latter.
Where the core doctrine of the church constitutes issues of theological and
Christian importance, they seem to slowly dissipate and the practices of the
secular world seem to take ownership of the church of Christ. The Reformed
church has within its confines the three marks of the church whose sole purpose is
to ensure that the church of God remains and continues to be the true church of
Christ. These Three Marks are: (a) the proclamation of the Word; (b) the correct
administration of the sacraments, and (c) the correct exercise of discipline. Among
the three marks, discipline acts as a catalyst that enables the survival and proper
continuance of the other two marks and thus the true church of Christ.
These Three Marks prescribe the basic fundamentals of the Uniting Reformed
Church in Southern Africa (URCSA) as a Reformed Church and thereby serve as
a primary tool for this church. Discipline, therefore, forms an intrinsic part of this
church. However, as a controlling mechanism, its influence and/or instillation
appears to be neglected. This quagmire may very well be attested to the
overemphasis of democracy (of/or relating to majority rule doctrine) in preference
to theocracy (God as the ultimate authority in our lives), where even matters of
high religious stature are being compacted to human decision-making processes.
These influences needless to say are key in the regression and/or progression of
Christian life and life in general. However, their inclusion within the Christian
doctrine should not be cumbersome to the latter. The Christian way of life and
doctrines should be holistically adhered to without fear or favour.
The main purpose behind the formation of these marks by the Reformed church
was to sustain the true church of Christ and the only way to ensure this
sustainability, was to be consistent in exercising these marks. The church
therefore has an obligation towards God and its members to be consistent in
carrying out its mandate from God through the scriptures as the creator and father
of the church and the world at large. The premonition that forms the basis of this
research is that within the three prevalent marks of the church, there appears to
be certain discrepancies in that they are not all carried out in unison and are not
consistent with each other. With the over-emphasis of one above the other, the
church of God could be heading towards vanity, and all its efforts could be
fruitless. It is also my conviction that the starting point for rolling out these three
marks lie with the leadership of the church by the General Synod, Regional
Synods, Presbyteries, Ministers and their church councils. If found that any of
these key adherents are not protagonists of these marks, then they would have
neglected their God-entrusted responsibilities and their accountability towards the
entire community of believers. It is in this regard that this research seeks to
implement a litmus test of where the URCSA stands in terms of executing its
mandate with relation to the three marks of the church viz; proclaiming the word,
administering the sacraments and more importantly, exercising exercising discipline as these marks form the sinew that binds the entire church together.
The church of Christ as an entity is engaged in service, which is not to be
haphazard in nature, but must be structured. This service begins with serving God,
serving one another and finally serving the world at large. This will ensure that the
church of God maintains its holiness. For this holiness to be ensured, the church
of God has to be open to discernment and allow God take charge of His church.
Such uncertainties can be verified only by looking into discipline as the sinew that
brings these three marks together. The reason for this approach is that, the first
two marks are prescriptive with more parameters than discipline has, whereas
discipline can be easily influenced. It is to the benefit of this task that much
attention be given to discipline as the last mark of the three, as it is prone to
abuse, because it relies mainly on human behaviour, attitude and/or approach to
the Christian life. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation is to outline the
possible disintegration of discipline as the sinew that binds the three marks of the
Reformed Church in general and URCSA in particular within the Southern Synod.
important to note that discipline in the lower strata of the church is carried out
religiously without question. The notion that prompted this topic is that contrarily,
those who occupy the highest echelons of the church (leadership in the church,
ministers and evangelists) do not appear to be enjoying the same reception
regarding discipline. The challenge that faces the URCSA is how to maintain equal
treatment of the three marks of the true church in a democratic society in the light
of the service of God, one another and the world. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M. Th. (Systematic Theology)

Imagined Communities: The Role of the Churches During and After Apartheid in SophiatownMafuta, Willy January 2016 (has links)
Many around the world have come to know South Africa as the rainbow nation, yet this notion has been subject to enormous critiques in the political discourse. The rainbow nation was conceived by the Government of National Unity that came to power in 1994, but it failed to materialize. What post-apartheid South Africa has yielded instead is a nation, or an imagined community, where race and ethnicity never receded. Although they are no longer pathological, race and ethnicity have become normative typifications of an overarching identity. Churches in particular have played a major role in creating a new identity.
Churches have managed to move beyond the yoke of race and ethnicity enforced during the Apartheid under the Group Areas Act and the Resettlement Acts, and epitomized by the destruction of the vibrant city of Sophiatown and, in its place, the building of Triomf, an Afrikaner imagined community. Churches have led the way in deconstructing the perceived or realized power or disempowerment that is residual to the Apartheid. In reconstructing the community, they have re-imagined an environment where race and ethnicity remain the standard component of the South African national identity. This re-imagining requires that race and ethnicity be constructed as relational rather than hierarchical. Moreover, it requires that one acknowledge the woundedness (e.g., shame, anger, guilt, hurt, humiliation, betrayal, fear, resentment) that racial typifications create. As a social construction, Churches in Sophiatown are fostering this ethical environment where these values are embraced.

volledig uitgewerk is, is hoofstuk 1 bloot 'n inleidende
In
vreemde teologiese aksente uitgewys. So bv. is daar 'n
verantwoordelikheid,

krities-waarderende opmerkings saamgevat. / Research into the theological content of the Evangelical
Hymns was initiated after it was established that such a
study had not been attempted in South Africa in Reformed
circles. Since the history and grounding of the church hymn
have already been discussed in full by other researchers,
chapter 1 merely offers an introductory review which
provides some background to the study. In chapter 2 a
categorisation of the Hymns was done in extenso and chapter
3, in turn, deals with the contents of each specific
category. The aim is to determine which subjects are
prevalent in Hymns and which ones are not addressed at all.
On the basis of this categorisation, five subjects were
finally defined which revealed obvious biblical-theological
lacunae, if not deviations, all of which need to be
addressed in the future. The subjects are: the ways of
thinking about God, the creation, sin, baptism and hopes for
the future. In chapter 4 these subjects were examined in
detail. It was proved, inter alia, that the contents of the
Hymns clearly reflect the traditional church doctrine and
consequently fail to a large extent to address modern man
(especially the young people of our time). The conclusion
reached by the researcher is that Hymns addressing the
contemporary problematic nature of faith have become a sine
qua non. Furthermore, research on the contents of the Hymns
also revealed foreign theological accents such as clear
influences of the Greek Platonistic dualism where the
Jenseitige is compared to the Diesseitige. This became
particularly evident in the discussion on the creation.
Eodem modo traces of the Pietistic indiviudalism were
detected in the Hymns, where the vertical experience of God
(conversion, sanctification) completely overshadows the
horizontal experience of religion (social responsibility,
mission work, nature conservation)! Chapter 5 comprises
these recommendations in the form of remarks of a criticalappreciation
nature.
