Abstract
This thesis discusses the age and sex distribution of previously
hospitalised asthmatics and the number of new asthma-induced treatment
periods as a proportion of all asthma-related hospital admissions.
Seasonal fluctuations in treatment periods were analysed with respect
to age, and seasonal fluctuations in mortality among previously
hospitalised asthmatics by combining the hospital discharge register
with the mortality statistics on the basis of the patients social
security numbers. A total of 364,871 asthma-induced treatment periods
were reported to the hospital discharge register in 1972-1992,
of which 192,195 occurred in 1.1.1983-31.12.1992, and 28.6% of
these were new cases. Treatment periods relative to population
amounted to 2.76/1000 in 1972 and 3.43/1000 in
1992.
The number of treatment periods among children was greatest
at the age of 1 year, 11.2/1000 for boys and 5.5/1000
for girls, and lowest at 17 years among the boys, and 13 years
among the girls. The numbers rose slowly in early adulthood (with
the exception of men aged 18-22 years), reaching a new peak at
73 years of age for men, 10.3/1000, and 75 years for women,
9.5/1000, and decreasing gradually thereafter. A half
of the treatment periods recorded for patients aged under 1 year
or for men aged 20 years represented new cases, whereas otherwise
the vast majority of the treatment periods were being readmissions.
The seasonal peaks among the total of 59,624 hospital periods
involving persons aged under 15 years reported to the discharge
register in 1972-1992 occurred in May and October, and the lowest
figures in January and July.
Conscripts aged 18-22 years experienced 4894 asthma-induced
treatment periods in 1982-1992, representing incidence rates of
8.5/1000 in 1982 and 27.7/1000 in 1992. The figure
was highest in the month in which the conscripts entered service
and the month following that.
A total of 81,243 asthma-induced treatment periods were recorded
for persons aged over 24 years in 1987-1992, the figures being
highest in January-May, 18.2% above the monthly trend
in January, and lowest in July, 26.1% below the monthly
trend. 7622 of the asthmatics first admitted in 1977-1992 died
at an age of over 24 years in 1987-1993, mortality being highest
in December and January and lowest in August. Obstructive pulmonary
diseases were the primary cause of death for 1283 persons, including
489 who died of asthma itself.
Apart from children and men aged 18-22 years, asthma gives
rise to a large number of treatment periods among the middle-aged
and the elderly. Measures should be taken to diagnose it at an
early stage in these groups and to intensify the treatment provided.
In addition, the factors provoking asthma during military service
should be minimised and preventive measures enhanced in the case of
children in May and September. As far as adults are concerned,
asthma-related hospitalisation may involve a greater fatality risk
in winter, so that aggravations occurring in winter should be treated with
particular care.

The National Register for Sexual Offenders : the solution to protecting children in South Africa?Jooma, Zubaida 03 June 2011 (has links)
On the 16 of June 2009 the South African government put into force the National Register for Sexual Offenders in an attempt to alleviate the problem of sexual crime. The aim of this dissertation was thus, to engage in a comparative study on how the National Register for Sexual Offenders will operate in South Africa compared to a similarly implemented register in the UK, with specific references being made to the US. The dissertation also sought to ask the question of whether the implementation of the register could be the solution to protecting children in South Africa. After, an analysis into sexual offender registers abroad, the findings revealed that registers are not proactive, a crime must have already occurred and an offender must be listed on the register, before the register can be of any preventative value. Furthermore, they are expensive to maintain they are punitive and impede on any form of rehabilitation or reintegration of offenders into society. As to whether the register could make South African communities safer, further research showed that the conviction rate of child sex abuse is very low as only one in nine children ever report such abuse and only 4% of these cases will result in conviction. Therefore because the provisions of the register require an offender to be convicted before they are registered, the consequence is that very few sex offenders will be listed on the register. Moreover the provisions of the register are narrow and seek to prevent registered offenders from being employed in positions where they may have access to children. Such an approach fails to recognise that in South Africa the majority of sexual offences involving children occur within the family environment and not at the work place. The conclusion of the research is that the National Register for Sex Offenders is not the solution to protecting children in South Africa and it was recommended that the South African government should look into a more immediate, long term and preventative solution to curbing sexual crime. / Dissertation (LLM)--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Private Law / unrestricted

Language Register in Written Feedback to Graduate StudentsQwai, Nidhal January 2016 (has links)
Abstract
Effective feedback, as an integral part of formative assessment, has been identified as a powerful tool that enhances learning. However, “Effectiveness” has been perceived differently by students due to at least four factors: 1. Quantity, 2. Quality, 3. Timing, and 4. Language used in feedback provided. Much research has been conducted on the first three factors, but language needs to be thoroughly investigated. This research in the sector of Education attempts to rectify certain important omissions in the literature of formative assessment in the area of language by using “register theory” in Systemic Functional Linguistics. With ‘register’ simply defined as field, tenor, and mode of discourse (e.g. Halliday, McIntosh, & Strevens, 1964), the not adequately captured relationship between language structure and language function, is to be re-visited (Halliday, 1985) in connection with educative feedback. In this study, field expressed through ideational meanings, tenor expressed through interpersonal meanings, and mode expressed through textual meanings are investigated in connection to how linguistic style affects the perceived effectiveness of written feedback provided to students. A small sample of graduate students from a Faculty of Education is examined. The systemic coder (O’Donnell, 2002) is employed on collected assignments from participants. Results show that the linguistic style of a professor is found to affect the perceived effectiveness of written feedback provided to students on their assignments. The use of the ideational meanings of material process, non-human participants, passive voice, and nominalization; the interpersonal meanings of declarative statements, interrogative statements, and modality; in addition to the textual meanings of lexical density, cohesion, textual adjuncts, and emphasis are all found to help students perceive feedback as effective. Therefore; professors are requested to increase the use of these language aspects when providing feedback because of the hidden positive meanings these aspects can add to the feedback provided. However, the use of the ideational meanings of behavioral process, relational process, and active voice; the interpersonal meanings of imperative statements, personal pronouns, and evaluative words; and the textual meanings of grammatical intricacy are found to result in students perceiving feedback as ineffective. As a result, professors are requested to decrease the use of these language aspects when providing feedback because of the hidden negative and unwanted meanings these aspects can add to the feedback provided. Results also illustrate that students perceive feedback as effective when this feedback leads to at least one of the following scenarios: improving student grades, protecting student self-esteem, having a good relation with feedback provider, and/or enhancing student learning. Ineffective feedback is found to have negative consequences on students. Decision-makers are requested to reduce the number of students as well as the tasks required in each class. They are also advised to professionally develop professors with training workshops on how to provide feedback.

Reálný zisk a efektivita plynoucí z nových přístupů k POS / Real earnings and efficiency resulting from new approaches to POSPokorný, Jaroslav January 2013 (has links)
On the Czech market is beginning to appear more and more software solutions of cash registers. A few years ago were Point of Sales (POS) systems rarely seen, especially in an restaurants. Nowadays, there is a proliferation of POS systems across the market. Not only in restaurants but also in convenience stores and stores providing services. Which POS system choose? In this work, I deal with the question: Whether we should purchase POS from a stable developers or give preference to young developers of POS solution. Respectively, what solution can increase efficiency and possibility of profit. The aim is to determine whether long-term development of older POS solutions is still effective and competitive with new solutions. The secondary objective may also be a recommendation of what product might be a good candidate for the position of cash register software in your business.

Quality assessment for register-based statistics - Results for the Austrian census 2011Asamer, Eva-Maria, Astleithner, Franz, Cetkovic, Predrag, Humer, Stefan, Lenk, Manuela, Moser, Mathias, Rechta, Henrik January 2016 (has links) (PDF)
In 2011, Statistics Austria carried out its first register-based census. Advantages of using administrative data for statistical purposes are, among others, a reduced burden for respondents and lower cost for the National Statistical Institutes (NSI). However, new challenges, like need for a new approach to the quality assessment of this kind of data arise. Therefore, Statistics Austria developed a comprehensive standardized framework to evaluate data quality for register-based statistics. In this paper, we present the basic concept of this quality framework and provide detailed results from the quality evaluation of the Austrian census of 2011. More specifically, we derive a quality measure for each census attribute from four complementary hyperdimensions. The first three of these hyperdimensions address the documentation of data, the usability of records and an external data validation. The fourth hyperdimension focuses on the quality of data imputations. The proposed framework combines these different quality-related information sources for each attribute to form an overall quality indicator. This procedure allows to track changes in quality during data processing and to compare the quality of different census generations.

Assessment of the potential of hospital birth records to estimate the number of births: A case study of Germiston and Nkomazi Local MunicipalitiesNhlapo, Mosidi Sarah January 2020 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / The advantage of a well-developed health information system is the significant role played by records produced by such a system beyond recording medical history of individuals. They are the foundation for birth registrations which when fully complete is an important tool for acquiring data necessary for planning and monitoring child and maternal health in a country.
This study aimed to investigate the potential of hospital birth records to estimate the number of births in the country and supplement birth registrations data. Data was abstracted from public facilities where births occur in two municipalities; Germiston in Gauteng and Nkomazi in Mpumalanga for the period 2014 to 2016. Modified version of the BORN Data Quality Framework (BORN-DQF) of the Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion (2016) was used to assess the contents and quality of hospital birth records. / 2022

Students’ Interpretations of Expressions in the Graphical Register and Its Relation to Their Interpretation of Points on Graphs when Evaluating Statements about Functions from CalculusJanuary 2019 (has links)
abstract: Functions represented in the graphical register, as graphs in the Cartesian plane, are found throughout secondary and undergraduate mathematics courses. In the study of Calculus, specifically, graphs of functions are particularly prominent as a means of illustrating key concepts. Researchers have identified that some of the ways that students may interpret graphs are unconventional, which may impact their understanding of related mathematical content. While research has primarily focused on how students interpret points on graphs and students’ images related to graphs as a whole, details of how students interpret and reason with variables and expressions on graphs of functions have remained unclear.
This dissertation reports a study characterizing undergraduate students’ interpretations of expressions in the graphical register with statements from Calculus, its association with their evaluations of these statements, its relation to the mathematical content of these statements, and its relation to their interpretations of points on graphs. To investigate students’ interpretations of expressions on graphs, I conducted 150-minute task-based clinical interviews with 13 undergraduate students who had completed Calculus I with a range of mathematical backgrounds. In the interviews, students were asked to evaluate propositional statements about functions related to key definitions and theorems of Calculus and were provided various graphs of functions to make their evaluations. The central findings from this study include the characteristics of four distinct interpretations of expressions on graphs that students used in this study. These interpretations of expressions on graphs I refer to as (1) nominal, (2) ordinal, (3) cardinal, and (4) magnitude. The findings from this study suggest that different contexts may evoke different graphical interpretations of expressions from the same student. Further, some interpretations were shown to be associated with students correctly evaluating some statements while others were associated with students incorrectly evaluating some statements.
I report the characteristics of these interpretations of expressions in the graphical register and its relation to their evaluations of the statements, the mathematical content of the statements, and their interpretation of points. I also discuss the implications of these findings for teaching and directions for future research in this area. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Mathematics 2019
