De senaste åren har utsläppsreglerna för sjöfarten blivit allt hårdare och under de kommande åren skärps de ännu mer. För att svaveldirektiven för sjöfarten ska fungera effektivt så krävs det också att de efterlevs. Syftet med den här studien var därför att undersöka hur länderna i Europeiska SECA områdena agerar och kommer att agera i framtiden för att se till att svaveldirektiven efterlevs. Studien syftar också till att undersöka hur efterlevnadskontroller genomförs, samt se om länderna har infört sanktioner mot överträdelser och vad dessa innebär. För att få svar på detta studerades lagar och förordningar, men framförallt skickades frågeformulär ut till de ansvariga myndigheterna i flera olika länder kring SECA områdena. Slutsatsen av det här arbetet är att samtliga länder anser att efterlevnadskontroll sker i tillräcklig omfattning och alla länder använder sig av samma metod. I Sverige pågår utveckling av en optisk mätmetod för att mäta svavelhalt i avgaserna ifrån luften, men än är metoden inte tillräckligt säker för att kunna användas. Det framkom också att i flera länder anses det på grund av flera faktorer vara svårt att fälla någon ifall de bryter mot gällande svavelförordningar, därför anses det också finnas en risk för överträdelser. Detta trots att det i andra länder faktiskt sker ingripande mot överträdelser och samtliga länder använder sig av samma metoder för efterlevnadskontroll. Det saknas i dagsläget även sanktioner mot överträdelser i flera länder.

Application of Lab VIEW in Smart Home Surveillance Systems

The objective of this research is to study smart home network systems and the application of Lab VIEW to develop man machine interface (MMI) so that traditional instrument panels can be replaced with virtual panels to reduce the consumption of hardware resources. For energy efficiency, the focus is on using MATLAB¡¦s fuzzy toolbox as the computing center and applying it to both lighting and air-conditioning systems. This thesis also looks into the use of Lab VIEW¡¦s CGI tools to develop remote monitoring functions as well as embedding the network related syntax into the Web pages. The user not only can use his/her computer equipment, but also their mobile devices (cell phone, PDA, pad, etc.) to link up to the networks and conduct remote monitoring, which enhances convenience and security. Hardware using wired control (PCI, Ethernet) and wireless control (ZigBee) could monitor the information from the components and transmit it to the computer for processing using the aforementioned method, and finally send it to the control end to complete the monitoring process. Choosing ZigBee wireless control is because it is more energy saving and network friendly than other wireless devices.It will have were opportunities to be used in home applications in the future. This thesis also integrates a fuzzy control for the power consumption. Test results show that adding fuzzy control can reduce power consumption. Besides using computers for remote monitoring functions, cell phones and pads were used as well.

Abstract Wireless communication and monitoring have been applied in military and other related engineering for couples of year. The application concept of this technology is now initiating in family life and the power monitoring of home scale combined with network and wireless communication will be setup in this study. This thesis is based on the use of PIC 16F877 microprocessor as main unit to catch the equipment information and treat the process of state control. The interchange control between information and main computer will be employed by RF wireless modulus. The drawing-type interface of human/machine is designed by using the software of Labview. The internet obeying agreements of TCP/IP communication combined with global movable communication of GSM will be built up to carry out the wireless remote control for safety-management system of power equipment by fast information transfer. This system was approved to meet the define requirements through the processes of analysis¡Bdesign¡Bmanufacturing and test.

This thesis describes the concept and  realization  of embedded system and cloud application, which is designed  for remote monitoring of car subsystems over CAN bus.    There are written several ways of getting information from car subsystems  and process of decoding messages sent over internal car bus.   Data gathering is realised by device based on ESP32, which is sending them to cloud application using wireless networks. Application UI is adapted for mobile devices and serves views containg current and historical gathered data.

Effect of Video Camera-Based Remote Roadway Condition Monitoring on Snow Removal-Related Maintenance Operations

Remote monitoring through the use of cameras is widely utilized for traffic operation, but has not been utilized widely for roadway maintenance operations. The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has implemented a new remote monitoring system, referred to as a Cloud-enabled Remote Video Streaming (CRVS) camera system for snow removal-related maintenance operations in the winter. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of the CRVS camera system in snow removal-related maintenance operations. This study was conducted in two parts: opinion surveys of maintenance station supervisors and an analysis on snow removal-related maintenance costs. The opinion surveys were performed in two methods: direct interviews and an online questionnaire. The responses to the opinion surveys mostly displayed positive reviews of the use of the CRVS cameras. On a scale of 1 (least effective) to 5 (most effective), the average overall effectiveness given by the station supervisors was 4.3 for both direct interviews and online questionnaire. On the online questionnaire, supervisors were asked to give an estimate of the reduction in expedition trips after having the CRVS camera installed. An expedition trip for this study was defined as a trip that was made to just check the roadways if snow-removal was necessary. The average of the responses received was calculated to be a 33 percent reduction in expedition trips. For the second part of this study, an analysis was performed on the snow removal-related maintenance cost data provided by UDOT to see if the installation of a CRVS camera had an effect in reducing expedition trips. Weather data of precipitation was also collected and analyzed; the analysis showed a close relation between precipitation patterns and patterns of snow removal-related maintenance costs of pairs of adjacent maintenance stations selected for analysis. This close relation in precipitation pattern and snow removal-related costs allowed a comparison of expedition cost of a maintenance station with a CRVS camera and a station without one. This expedition cost comparison was performed for 10 sets of maintenance stations within Utah. It was difficult to make any definitive inferences from the comparison of expedition costs over the years for which precipitation and expedition cost data were available; hence a statistical analysis was performed using the Mixed Model ANOVA. This analysis resulted in an average of 14 percent higher ratio of expedition costs at maintenance stations with a CRVS camera before the installation of the camera compared to the ratio of expedition costs after the installation of the camera. This difference was not proven to be statistically significant at the 95 percent confident level, but indicated that the installation of CRVS cameras was on the average helpful in reducing expedition costs and may be considered practically significant. It is recommended that more detailed and consistent maintenance cost records be prepared for accurate analysis of cost records for this type of study in the future.

Development of Optofluidic Sensors for Remote Monitoring Applications

In this dissertation fluorescence-based sensors for dissolved gases were developed for remote health monitoring applications including urine analysis. Detection of dissolved gases demonstrate diagnostic potential in body fluids, and indicate the metabolism of microorganisms driven by contaminated water. The emphasis of this research was on optimizing the sensitivity of fluorescence-based fluid sensing systems by configuring key design parameters towards cost reduction. A review of urine analysis indicated several methods for imaging, particle analysis, and detection of dissolved analytes. The review encourages readers to consider integrating sensing systems to provide additional context to results. An optical Dissolved Oxygen (DO) sensor was reproduced using phosphorescent organometallic dyes. The sensitivity of the DO sensor was experimentally optimized by employing Total Internal Reflection (TIR) of excitation light within the multilayered device by controlling the incident angle and sensitive film thickness. Novel 3D ray tracing-based computer models were developed based on the experimental results to explain the sensitivity enhancement mechanism of TIR. The path of light within the device and fluorescence generation sites were visualized and relative sensitivity was predicted. The model was validated by comparison with experimental results and expanded to predict the relative sensitivity of devices using different coupling strategies. This new optical model enables researchers to select an optimal coupling and detection scheme given their unique sensor design and application. A fluorescence based optofluidic sensor for Ammonia was redesigned based on experiment and simulation results. An optofluidic chip reader was produced to measure fluorescence sensors using low cost consumer electronics. The sensitivity of the ammonia sensor module has not been demonstrated; however, identified design challenges will be overcome in future efforts. As a result of this research, the cost of optofluidic sensing systems may be reduced towards enabling widely deployed remote monitoring networks for health and water quality. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / Dissolved gases have been detected in fluid samples as indicators of health and microbial activity by measuring changes in the intensity of fluorescence emitted from gas sensitive fluorescent dyes. These sensors can often be miniaturized and integrated to measure several parameters from a single platform. Several sensing platforms may be integrated into a continuous monitoring network. However, the cost of complete remote sensing networks prohibits the widespread deployment of these devices. The aim of this research was to improve the sensitivity of fluorescence-based sensors, reducing dependence on expensive detectors and light sources. The sensitivity of a fluorescence based dissolved oxygen sensor was optimized using Total Internal Reflection. A computer model was developed to identify important design parameters and their contributions to sensor performance. The model was validated by comparison with experimental measurements. Finally, an optical ammonia sensor is under development based on the dissolved oxygen experiments and model results.

A Satellite Control Center (SCC) was designed and installed to support the operation of the satellite systems DFS Kopernikus and TV-Sat. The DFS Kopernikus system is composed of three flight models and the satellite system TV-Sat has one flight model. The aim was to design an SCC and ground stations in a way, enabling the operation of satellites and groundstations by only two operators at the main control room. The operators are well trained but not scientifically educated. The high integrated SCC supports the operators with a state of the art man-machine-interface. Software executes all necessary tasks for spacecraft- and ground station control. Interaction in front of communication equipment is not necessary. The operation of satellites is a business with a high risk potential. This paper presents the design of a Satellite Control Center with high system availability.

Design and development of a remote monitoring system for fuel cells

(Engineering, Electrical, Department Applied Electronics and Electronic Communication, Faculty of Engineering and Technology) -- Vaal University of Technology / This dissertation presents the design and development of a remote monitoring system (RMS) for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) to facilitate their efficient operation. The RMS consists of a data acquisition system built around the PIC 16F874 microcontroller that communicates with a personal computer (PC) by use of the RS232 serial communication standard, using a simple wired connection between the two. The design also consists of a human machine interface (HMI) developed in Visual Basic 6.0 to provide a platform for display of the monitored parameters in real time. The first objective was to establish performance variables and past studies on PEM fuel cells revealed that variables that affect the system's performance include: fuel and oxidant input pressure and mass flow rates as well as operation temperature and stack hydration. The next objective was to design and develop a data acquisition system (DAS) that could accurately measure the performance variables and convey the data to a PC. This consisted of sensors whose outputs were input into two microcontrollers that were programmed to process the data received and transfer it to the PC. A HMI was developed that provided graphical display of the data as well as options for storage and reviewing the data. The developed system was then tested on a 150Watt PEM fuel cell stack and the data acquisition system was found to reliably capture the fuel cell variables. The HMI provided a real-time display of the data, with alarms indicating when set minimums were exceeded and all data acquired was saved as a Microsoft Excel file.
