MLAs and constituency representation in two Manitoba ridingsRebizant, Jessica 10 September 2014 (has links)
Representation is a multi-faceted process that is integral to the Canadian democratic system. The process of representation relies on continuous negotiation between the elected representative and their constituents. It is through this process of building and maintaining connections with constituents that politicians develop their own representational strategy. This thesis examines two case studies—Manitoba MLAs Ralph Eichler and Blaine Pederson—to consider how Manitoba MLAs represent their constituents. A participant observation methodology was used to familiarize the researcher with the representational practices of these case study MLAs. It was found that even though the two MLAs were descriptively similar, the approaches they employed to represent their constituents were significantly different. It was further found that these vast differences were mainly attributed to three influential factors: personal goals, constituency context, and formative experiences.

Proportional representation in CanadaGlashan, John Gall January 1951 (has links)
The thesis of this paper is that proportional representation is a desirable reform and that it could be applied to the election of the legislative bodies in Canada to a far greater extent than has been admitted by its opponents.
In Chapter 1 the two main types of porportional representation, or P.R. as it is called generally, the Hare system, preferred on the English speaking countries, and the 'list' type, preferred on the Continent of Europe, are examined and compared. The two basic premises of P.R.: that every substantial group in the community is entitled to representation at all times; and that no one, in his capacity as a member of a substantial group, can be represented by someone for whom he has not voted; are evaluated and found logical. In Chapter II the past and present uses of P.R. in Canada are surveyed. This reform came about as a result of the renewed interest in effective democratic government occasioned by World War 1. P.R. was tried in both municipal and provincial elections, and, although a failure in the municipal field, was never repealed for the election of some M.L A.'s in Alberta and Manitoba. The conclusion reached is that the factor of party had a great deal to do with the retention or rejection of P.R.; and that P.R. was not given a fair trial in the civic field. Chapter III surveys the history of P.R. as an issue in the House of Commons. The subject was debated at considerable length in the early 1920's; the only recorded division in the House on P.R. is analysed. The Report of the 1936 Special Committee on the Election and Franchise Act is examined and found too shallow for acceptance.
In Chapter IV an attempt has been made to meet the geographic objection of the Special Committee, namely, that constituencies would be far too large, by proposing a partial application of P.R. to federal elections. Appendix I is a map upon which the proposed scheme has been drawn. Some indications of the extent to which P.R. could be applied for the elections of provincial legislators are given. In Chapter V the other main objection of the Special Committee, namely, that P.R. would cause the disintegration of political parties into groups and seriously endanger the operation of
cabinet government is rejected because the paradoxical integrating effect of a federal system, and the similar effect of the Crown, are ignored. The conclusion is that P.R. is a logical extension of the democratic election, but that in the past it has been supported from the wrong point of view, and, that, therefore, the initiative will now have to come from the voters. / Arts, Faculty of / Political Science, Department of / Graduate

Some representations of SL∗(2,A)Averett, Syvillia Ann 01 July 2012 (has links)
The study of groups has been of interest to mathematicians since the 19th century. Although much is known about the structure of groups, many group theoretic problems remain unsolved. Representation theory allows us to employ linear algebra to solve such problems. The representation theory of linear groups over finite fields has been a particularly interesting topic. Studying these representations is of interest to mathematicians and other scientists as it relates to physics and modern number theory.
In the 1960s Andre Weil introduced a method for finding a special unitary representation for symplectic groups over locally compact fields. This unitary representation is now referred to as the Weil representation. In 2010 Luis Gutiérrez, José Pantoja and Jorge Soto-Andrade were able to generalize Weil's method to a larger class of linear groups namely the ∗-analogue of Sl2.
Originally, Weil constructed this unitary representation, decomposed it into irreducibles and, in this way, produced the irreducible complex representations of Sp(2n,k). Later, Shalika went in the other direction, first finding the irreducible representations and then computing their multiplicities in the Weil representation. We intend to follow Shalika's method.
In this thesis we look to explore the representation theory of Sl∗(2, A) where A is the direct sum of the upper and lower n × n block matrices in M(2n,k), k a finite field. We use Wigner and Mackey's Method of Little Groups to construct these representations.

System Design and Analysis for Creating a 3D Virtual Street Scene for Autonomous Vehicles Using Geometric Proxies from a Single Video CameraWong, Timothy 01 June 2019 (has links) (PDF)
Self-driving vehicles use a variety of sensors to understand the environment they are in. In order to do so, they must accurately measure the distances and positions of the objects around them. A common representation of the environment around the vehicle is a 3D point cloud, or a set of 3D data points which represent the positions of objects in the real world relative to the car. However, while accurate and useful, these point clouds require large amounts of memory compared to other representations such as lightweight polygonal meshes. In addition, 3D point clouds can be difficult for a human to visually understand as the data points do not always form a naturally coherent object.
This paper introduces a system to lower the memory consumption needed for the graphical representation of a virtual street environment. At this time, the proposed system takes in as input a single front-facing video. The system uses the video to retrieve still images of a scene which are then segmented to distinguish the different relevant objects, such as cars and stop signs. The system generates a corresponding virtual street scene and these key objects are visualized in the virtual world as low poly, or low resolution, models of the respective objects. This virtual 3D street environment is created to allow a remote operator to visualize the world that the car is traveling through. At this time, the virtual street includes geometric proxies for parallel parked cars in the form of lightweight polygonal meshes. These meshes are predefined, taking up less memory than a point cloud, which can be costly to transmit from the remote vehicle and potentially difficult for a remote human operator to understand. This paper contributes a design and analysis of an initial system for generating and placing these geometric proxies of parked cars in a virtual street environment from one input video. We discuss the limitations and measure the error for this system as well as reflect on future improvements.
