The relationship between graphing calculator use and the development of classroom norms in an exemplay teacher's college algebra course

The purpose of this study was to advance knowledge about the relationship between graphing calculator use and classroom norm development. An interpretive case study design incorporating qualitative and quantitative research methods was used to explore the question: What happens when an exemplary teacher uses graphing calculators in a college algebra class? The purposively selected participants were the teacher and eleven students of a Texas community college algebra course. All 29 classes of the 14-week spring 2006 semester were observed in their entirety by the researcher. The theoretical frameworks guiding the study were the affective representation system and the Multiple Representations Model of Learning and Teaching with the use of the Mathematics and Science Classroom Observation System for data collection, analysis, and profiling of classroom lessons. Originally developed for grades K-12, the use of the instrument was extended to college algebra. Triangulation of data sources using constant comparative and content analysis methods were used to support the three major findings: (1) The instructor's proactive orchestration of specialized instruction, support materials, and designed activities contributed to the establishment of graphing calculator use as an essential part of classroom norms and promoted students' independent use of the tool; (2) The dynamic and interactive features of the TI-84 Plus graphing calculator facilitated the delivery of instruction at high cognitive levels during student interactive activities providing access to, exploration of, and use of multiple representations for some mathematical concepts and solutions not easily attainable using traditional methods; and (3) Although the majority of students had never used a graphing calculator before the course, all students used the tool at appropriate times during instructional activities, self-reporting that their use of the calculator was generally beneficial for enhancing their understanding of lessons and supporting class interactions. Additionally, all students independently chose to use the calculator during major assessments and reported knowledgeable use of the tool to facilitate improved test performance. Replication of the study is limited because the norms developed in this case are unique to the teacher and students who negotiated their establishment. Suggestions are given regarding educational policies, reform practices, and research extensions.

Intelligence without hesitation

<p>This thesis aims to evaluate four artificial neural network architectures, each of which implements the sensory-motor mapping in an embodied, situated, and autonomous agent set up to reach a goal area in one out of six systematically varied T-maze environments. In order to reach the goal the agent has to turn either to the left or to the right in each junction in the environment, depending on the placement of previously encountered light sources. The evaluation is broken down into (i) measuring the reliability of the agents' capacity to repeatedly reach the goal area, (ii) analyzing how the agents work, and (iii) comparing the results to related work on the problem.</p><p>Each T-maze constitutes an instance of a broad class of problems known as delayed response tasks, which are characterized by a significant (and typically varying) delay between a stimulus and the corresponding appropriate response. This thesis expands this notion to include, besides simple tasks, repeated and multiple delayed response tasks. In repeated tasks, the agent faces several stimulus-delay-response sequences after each other. In multiple tasks, the agent faces several stimuli before the delay and the corresponding appropriate responses. Even if simple at an abstract level, these tasks raise some of the fundamental issues within cognitive science and artificial intelligence such as whether or not an internal objective world model is necessary and/or suitable to achieve the appropriate behavior. For such reasons, these problems also constitute an interesting base for evaluating alternative ideas within these fields.</p><p>The work leads to several interesting insights. Firstly, purely reactive controllers (as represented by a feed-forward network) may be sufficient, in interaction with the environment, to solve both simple and repeated delayed response tasks. Secondly, an extended sequential cascaded network that selectively replaces its own sensory-motor mapping achieves significantly better performance than the other networks. This indicates that selective replacement of the sensory-motor mapping may be more powerful than both modulation (as represented by a simple recurrent network) and replacement in each step (as represented by a standard sequential cascaded network). Thirdly, this thesis demonstrates that even reactive controllers may contribute to behavior, which, from an observer's point of view, may seem to require an internal rational capacity, i.e. the ability to represent and explore alternatives internally.</p>

Embodied Cognition as Internal Simulation of Perception and Action: Towards a cognitive robotics

<p>This dissertation discusses the view that embodied cognition is essentially internal simulation (or emulation) of perception and action, and that the same (neural) mechanisms are underlying both real and simulated perception and action. More specifically, it surveys evidence supporting the simulation view from different areas of cognitive science (neuroscience, perception, psychology, social cognition, theory of mind). This is integrated with related research in situated robotics and directions for future work on internal simulation of perception and action in robots are outlined. In sum, the ideas discussed here provide an alternative view of representation, which is opposed to the traditional correspondence notions of representation that presuppose objectivism and functionalism. Moreover, this view is suggested as a viable route for situated robotics, which due to its rejection of traditional notions of representation so far has mostly dealt with more or less reactive behavior, to scale up to a cognitive robotics, and thus to further contribute to cognitive science and the understanding of higher-level cognition</p>

Psychological factors associated with walking in patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease

Objectives This thesis aimed to explore psychological factors associated with walking behaviour in patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease, within the framework of Leventhal et al’s (1998) Common-sense Model of Self-regulation of Health and Illness. The objective was to identify psychological factors which could be modified to increase walking behaviour in these patients. Method A series of three studies were conducted to achieve these aims. The first study was an exploratory qualitative study, to explore the illness and treatment beliefs and walking behaviour of patients with intermittent claudication. The second study was a cross-sectional postal questionnaire to a cohort of patients with intermittent claudication, which tested the influence of the psychological factors identified in the qualitative study, in a larger sample. The final study was a randomised controlled trial of a brief psychological intervention designed to modify the illness and walking beliefs of patients with intermittent claudication, in order to increase walking behaviour. Results Beliefs about intermittent claudication, and beliefs about walking were both found to be associated with walking behaviour in the qualitative study. The results from the cross-sectional postal questionnaire confirmed this relationship – taken as a set, illness and walking beliefs accurately predicted adherence to minimum walking levels for 93.4% of the sample. The brief psychological intervention successfully modified illness and treatment beliefs and increased walking behaviour in patients newly diagnosed with intermittent claudication. Conclusion This thesis highlights the importance of illness and walking beliefs to the walking behaviour of patients with intermittent claudication. The thesis has added to the body of knowledge about intermittent claudication, and the findings of this thesis have implications for the treatment of patients with intermittent claudication within the health service. Theoretical and clinical implications of this research are discussed.

ADHD Symptoms : Objective Performance and Subject Perspective

ADHD research has mainly focused on objective performance measures. Performance, however, is only one aspect of functioning. Other aspects of how individuals function are their personal experiences and their evaluations of those experiences. The aim of this thesis is to expand knowledge on the topic of ADHD by presenting studies that investigate objective performance and subject perspective, simultaneously. The empirical work presented here has a dimensional approach to ADHD, which is reflected in the use of samples selected to represent a wide variation in ADHD symptoms. Herein, both objective performance and subject perspective are conceptualized in various ways, to address unanswered questions and to question previous research. ADHD is related to underperformance within the academic realm and within the social realm. By introducing novel subject perspective measures, and including objective performance measures in new ways, a more nuanced understanding of these underperformance areas was gained. More specifically, we obtained an overview of the influence of ADHD symptoms in late childhood and adolescence in relation to academic performance by studying a longitudinal framework of concomitant factors. Furthermore, we disentangled the interplay of ADHD and ODD symptoms and cognitive performance in predicting social acceptance and the "positive illusory bias". Additionally, we questioned the link between disorganized attachment representations and ADHD symptoms by investigating the potential relationship between attachment representations and ADHD symptoms, whilst considering concurrent conduct problems, cognitive performance and narrative responses to non-attachment related story stems. Main results indicate that academic performance is influenced by ADHD symptoms and previous academic performance; adolescent self-perceptions of academic competence are negligible in this context. Moreover, ADHD symptoms in adolescence have a negative influence on views of the future, beyond academic performance and parental education. Further, results indicate that positive illusory bias relates more to ODD behaviors. Finally, results also indicate that children with high levels of ADHD symptoms could falsely appear to be disorganized due to a propensity to include negative content in narratives. In conclusion, when studied together, objective performance and subject perspective give new insight into ADHD. The findings presented motivate the simultaneous inclusion of different perspectives of functioning in ADHD research.

Representing Future Situations of Service : Prototyping in Service Design / Representationer av Framtida Tjänster : Prototypande i Tjänstedesign

This thesis describes prototyping in service design through the theoretical lens of situated cognition. The research questions are what a service prototype is, what the benefits of service prototyping are, and how prototypes aid in the process of designing services. Four papers are included. Paper one suggests that service prototyping should be considered from the perspectives of purpose, fidelity, audience, position in the process, technique, representation, validity and author. The second paper compares research about how humans use external representations to think, with reasons for using prototypes in service design and service design techniques. The third paper compares two versions of a service prototyping technique called service walkthrough; showing that walkthroughs with pauses provided both more comments in total and more detailed feedback. The fourth paper also contributes to our understanding of how prototypes aid in designing services, by connecting the surrogate situation with the future situation of service. The paper shows how the formative service evaluation technique (F-SET) uses the theory of planned behaviour to add knowledge to service prototype evaluations about the intention to use a service in the future. Taken together the research provides a deeper understanding of what prototypes are, and their roles in service prototyping. This understanding is further deepened by a discussion about service as a design material, suggesting that from a design perspective, a service consists of service concept, process and system. The service prototype acts as a surrogate for the future situation of service. The thesis describes what the benefits of using surrogates are, and shows how prototypes enhance the ability to gain knowledge about future situations. This leads to an understanding of prototyping as a way of thinking in design. / Den här avhandlingen använder situerad kognition som lins för at beskriva prototypande i tjänstedesign. Genom den här beskrivningen undersöker avhandlingen vad en tjänsteprototyp är, vad fördelarna med att använda prototyper är samt hur prototypande kan användas för att designa tjänster. Fyra artiklar ingår i avhandlingen. Den första artikeln föreslår att tjänsteprototypande ska betraktas från perspektiven syfte, detaljgrad, publik, position i processen, teknik, representation, validitet och författare. Avhandlingens andra artikel jämför forskning om fördelarna med att använda externa representationer för tänkande, med anledningar för att externalisera i tjänstedesign, och tekniker för att göra externa representationer. Den tredje artikeln jämför två variationer av prototypningstekniken tjänstegenomgång, och visar att genomgångar med pauser ger mer kommentarer och mer detaljerad feedback. Direct Volume Haptics for Visualization

Visualization is the process of making something perceptible to the mind or imagination. The techniques for producing visual imagery of volumetric data have advanced immensely during the last decades to a point where each produced image can include an overwhelming amount of information. An increasingly viable solution to the limitations of the human sense of visual perception is to make use of not only vision, but also additional senses. This thesis presents recent work on the development of principles and algorithms for generating representations of volumetric data through the sense of touch for the purpose of visualization. The primary idea introduced in this work is the concept of yielding constraints, that can be used to provide a continuous set of shapes as a representation of features of interest in various types of volumetric data. Some of the earlier identified standard human exploratory procedures can then be used which enables natural, intuitive and effective interaction with the data. The yielding constraints concept is introduced, and an algorithm based on haptic primitives is described, which forms a powerful yet versatile implementation of the yielding constraints. These methods are also extended to handle time-varying, moving and low quality data. A framework for multimodal visualization has been built on the presented methods, and this is used to demonstrate the applicability and versatility of the work through several example applications taken from different areas.
