Rethinking conflict resolution research in post-war Bosnia and Hercegovina : a genealogical and ontological exploration

Muir, Rachel January 2012 (has links)
This thesis explores how research is implicated in the constitution of post-war environments, and gives an account of being and becoming a researcher in post-war Bosnia. My main contention is that when peace and conflict researchers conduct research in post-war contexts, their presence, practices, and the consequential production of knowledge and representations, have political effects. I argue that the implications of this have not been fully explained, acknowledged, or problematised within Conflict Resolution, which tends to rely on research approaches and assumptions taken from ‘normal’ science. This thesis suggests how reflexivity and alternatives methodologies, including visual research might be used to represent the emotional, sensory, and often intangible elements of post-war realities. It enacts an engagement in the politics of research and uses reflexive writing and visual methods to draw attention to the importance of the relational aspects of research in postwar environments. Visual journeys are also used to argue that visual methods can provide a way of revisiting the epistemological and ontological assumptions about lived experiences and realities in post-war settings. The thesis is based upon one year of ethnographic fieldwork undertaken in Bosnia, and is also informed by eighteen months of volunteer work with a Bosnian Community Centre in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.

Building Capacity in the Zambian Mental Health Workforce through Engaging College Educators: Evaluation of a Development Partnership in Higher Education (DelPHe) project

Penson, W.J., Karban, Kate, Patrick, S., Walker, B., Ng'andu, R., Bowa, A.C., Mbewe, E. January 2016 (has links)
yes / Between 2008 and 2011 academic teaching staff from Leeds Beckett University (UK) and Chainama Hills College of Health Sciences (Zambia) worked together on a Development Partnership in Higher Education (DelPHe) project funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) via the British Council. The partnership focused on “up-scaling” the provision of mental health education which was intended to build capacity through the delivery of a range of workshops for health educators at Chainama College, Lusaka. The project was evaluated on completion using small focus group discussions (FGDs), so educators could feedback on their experience of the workshops and discuss the impact of learning into their teaching practice. This chapter discusses the challenges of scaling up the mental health workforce in Zambia; the rationale for the content and delivery style of workshops with the health educators and finally presents and critically discusses the evaluation findings. / Department for International Development (DFID) via the British Council

No. of bitstreams: 1 4041.pdf: 3533641 bytes, checksum: 8338b6abff98c399bfcbf5c9717632ee (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-12-16 / This research, compiled from the theoretical foundation in the areas of Ergonomics and Design, takes as object of study the social process of designing in a postal company, in which aims at producing knowledge and assisting with new project practices in the context of Ergonomics. The problem focused the linkage between Ergonomics, Project, and Use detailed by a social process of designing that highlight the question of how conflict of values are materialized in technical devices from the variables and its demonstration of use. The evaluation of the results, aims at redeeming the relationships between the actors and conflicts of meaning repercussions on the construction of the artifact. There were highlighted the conflict of values (matters relating the actors and their relationships), conflicts of variables (questions relating to the project options and interfaces of communication within the group) and inadequacies of use (questions relating to the quality of the object from its use) as means of social structure analysis, the spaces of this practice and obstacles to its achievement were accentuated. The role of the coordinator of the social process of project as a negotiator and interfaces employed as means of language were highlighted as well. In conclusion, the results of the social process-centric approach in the context of Ergonomics can approximate project and use, integrating in the public sphere the phases of the Ergonomic Work Analysis and designing activities. Considering this, the results of this process is not the materialization of technical devices as an end, but as resources capable to bring flexibility and significance to the activity of work, seeking to perceive and conceive the object in use manifestation, i.e., in its social function, including the different aspects that form it.

Reprezentace, proces, zkušenost: (post)industriální krajina v antropologicko-geografické perspektivě / Representation, process, experience: (post)industrial landscape in anthropological-geographical perspective

Gibas, Petr January 2016 (has links)
Representation, process, experience: (post)industrial landscape in anthropological-geographical perspective Abstract The main topic of the dissertation is the (post)industrial landscape of what is today the Czech Republic. In particular, the dissertation presents three case studies of three (post)industrial landscapes: that of Ostrava, Kladno and Most. The aim of the dissertation is twofold - thematic as well as theoretical. As far as the thematic focus of the dissertation goes, the author employs the concept of landscape as a prism through which it is possible to explore large societal shifts and changes as they are mirrored in landscape. The question is what has happened to industrial landscape after the fall of socialism and how industrial landscape has turned into what it is now. On the theoretical level, the (post)industrial landscape of contemporary Czechia is used as a means of exploring the complexity of the concept of landscape and developing a conceptualization of landscape that comes to terms with its complexity, ambiguity and elusiveness. In terms of theory, the dissertation engages with three ways of conceptualising landscape prevalent in contemporary anthropology and (new cultural) geography: landscape as representation, process and experience. To explore them in depth and reveal any...

Die Aluminiumbatterie: Herausforderungen für die industrielle Fertigung - ProBaSol: Teilprojekt: Umsetzung vorlaufend entwickelter Feststoffbatteriekonzepte auf Basis des hochvalenten Kations Aluminium: Schlussbericht

Stöcker, Hartmut, Meyer, Dirk C. 10 July 2024 (has links)
