EFFECTS OF ONTARIO’S IMMIGRATION POLICY ON YOUNG NON-PERMANENT RESIDENTS BETWEEN 2001 AND 2006lin, lu 11 June 2013 (has links)
The object of this research is to assess the effects of Ontario’s new immigration policy on young non-permanent residents. In particular, it is to evaluate how the wage gap between young non-permanent residents and young Canadian citizens has changed in the labor market of Ontario from 2001 to 2006 to demonstrate influences of new policy. On November 21, 2005, the governments of Ontario and Canada signed the first Canada-Ontario immigration agreement that relaxed several requirements for temporary workers to apply for permanent residency. This paper selected data from the 2001 and 2006 population census to conduct a linear regression to analyze the wage gap and the effects of immigration policy. By using the difference-in-difference approach, this paper found that there was no significant positive effect of the new policy on the entry earnings of non-permanent residents in Ontario.

FOOD SHOPPING HABITS AND THE ASSOCIATION WITH DIETWest, Crystal Danielle 01 January 2014 (has links)
Research suggests that the connection between poor diet and obesity among rural residents may be partially explained by limited access to healthy foods including fruits and vegetables (F&V). Based on federal suggestions to improve access, the purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between food shopping habits food venues and dietary intake of residents in rural counties of Kentucky. In May, 2013, a telephone survey was conducted using random-digit dial methods among n=149 participants in all three counties. Results showed that grocery shopping at supermarkets had a moderate positive correlation with F&V intake (r=.357, .348). These findings suggest participants who shop at supermarkets also consume F&V. Our study’s findings did not give a strong correlation between F&V consumption and farmers’ market use, which could be due to the locations of these markets, price of produce, or other environmental barriers that were not looked at in this study. Although the results from our study do not show a correlation, the majority of previous research supports the need to improve farmers’ market locations to help increase accessibility for groups with low F&V consumption and emphasize the importance of addressing economic barriers to food access.

Can a sports team create love for a City? : a case study of place attachment from a resident perspectiveHadzimesic, Merima, Oxwall, Amanda January 2013 (has links)
Purpose The study theoretically examine if satisfaction of a sports team can create place attachment to a city from a residents’ perspective. It empirically tests if this theory can be applied in reality through a case study of a handball team IFK Kristianstad, and Kristianstad city. Design/methodology/approach A deductive approach that was based on theoretical insights from place attachment, satisfaction and service quality. A quantitative study was conducted on spectators in Kristianstad Arena. Findings The paper reveals that high service quality leads to high satisfaction among spectators, which creates place attachment to Kristianstad. The results proved that residents of Kristianstad are more place attached to the city than people living elsewhere. Originality/value The value of our paper is a new insight of place attachment from a resident’s perspective. The paper highlights that satisfaction of a sports team actually can create place attachment to a city. Research implications There are many variables that are important when exploring residents’ satisfaction and place attachment, several of them may be education, healthcare, entertainment and variety in a city. By studying the different variables it is possible to receive a larger perspective from residents’ point of views. Additionally, the study could be applied in a larger context where the target group is the whole population of a city. Practical implications The practical contribution might be valuable information for IFK Kristianstad about the spectators of the team; among other, the information demonstrates that the team is valuable for the city. Since the handball team is of importance for both the city and its residents, this information might be useful when marketing Kristianstad city in the future.

Quality of institutional elderly care in SloveniaHabjanic, A. (Ana) 18 August 2009 (has links)
Abstract
Elderly people, because of the frail health condition and consequent problems, have in most cases substantial difficulties living at home. Despite the need for widened nursing home custody, the field of quality institutional elderly care in Slovenia in the past did not undergo comprehensive research.
The purpose of this two-part study was to investigate the quality of institutional elderly care and elderly care offered in Slovenian nursing homes. Additional purpose was to evaluate nursing staff members about their willingness, knowledge, skills and importance to meet residents’ physical and psychosocial nursing care needs. Also, a part of this research was bound for recognition of maltreatment and nursing staff members’ well-being.
The qualitative and quantitative research methods were used. The quality of institutional elderly care and elderly care offered were researched by interviewing the parties involved in elderly care, residents, relatives and nursing staff members (N=48). The data for quantitative research was collected by surveying nursing staff by using a structured questionnaire (N=148). All data have been collected in three public and one private nursing home located in two major cities of Ljubljana and Maribor. Collected data was examined by content analysis method and statistical analysis, to corroborate findings across data sets, reducing the impact of potential biases that can exist in a single study. Triangulation was used to approach to data analysis to synthesize data from multiple sources.
Main categories of quality institutional elderly were formulated as attentive care, optimal custody and holistic approach. The most important issue of quality institutional elderly care was formulated as meeting needs on time. Nursing staff members were found to be better skilled in meeting physical than psychosocial needs of residents. Maltreatment was recognised as neglect of care due to postponed duties or hastiness in nursing interventions resulting in discomfort of residents. Factors in connection to quality of institutional elderly care were expressed as quality of nursing care, friendly relationship, meaningful activities, pleasant dwelling environment and versatile assistance.
The obtained findings were presented in form of proposals to improve quality of institutional elderly care in Slovenian nursing homes, and could be used to develop institutional elderly care and improve dwelling. In addition many specific terms have been extracted during the analysis process that may contribute to development of gerontological nursing care rationale in Slovenia.
