A transaction model for environmental resource dependent Cyber-Physical Systems

Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Computing and Information Sciences / Gurdip Singh / Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) represent the next-generation systems characterized by strong coupling of computing, sensing, communication, and control technologies. They have the potential to transform our world with more intelligent and efficient systems, such as Smart Home, Intelligent Transportation System, Energy-Aware Building, Smart Power Grid, and Surgical Robot. A CPS is composed of a computational and a physical subsystem. The computational subsystem monitors, coordinates and controls operations of the physical subsystem to create desired physical effects, while the physical subsystem performs physical operations and gives feedback to the computational subsystem. This dissertation contributes to the research of CPSs by proposing a new transaction model for Environmental Resource Dependent Cyber-Physical Systems (ERDCPSs). The physical operations of such type of CPSs rely on environmental resources, and they are commonly seen in areas such as transportation and manufacturing. For example, an autonomous car views road segments as resources to make movements and a warehouse robot views storage spaces as resources to fetch and place goods. The operating environment of such CPSs, CPS Network, contains multiple CPS entities that share common environmental resources and interact with each other through usages of these resources. We model physical operations of an ERDCPS as a set of transactions of different types that achieve different goals, and each transaction consists of a sequence of actions. A transaction or an action may require environmental resources for its operations, and the usage of an environmental resource is precise in both time and space. Moreover, a successful execution of a transaction or an action requires exclusive access to certain resources. Transactions from different CPS entities of a CPS Network constitute a schedule. Since environmental resources are shared, transactions in the schedule may have conflicts in using these resources. A schedule must remain consistent to avoid unexpected consequences caused by resource usage conflicts between transactions. A two-phase commit algorithm is proposed to process transactions. In the pre-commit phase, a transaction is scheduled by reserving usage times of required resources, and potential conflicts are detected and resolved using different strategies, such as Win-Lose, Win-Win, and Transaction Preemption. Two general algorithms are presented to process transactions in the pre-commit phase for both centralized and distributed resource management environments. In the commit phase, a transaction is executed using reserved resources. An exception occurs when the real-time resource usage is different from what has been predicted. By doing internal and external check before a scheduled transaction is executed, exceptions can be detected and handled properly. A simulation platform (CPSNET) is developed to simulate the transaction model. The simulation platform simulates a CPS Network, where different CPS entities coordinate resource usages of their transactions through a Communication Network. Depending on the resource management environment, a Resource Server may exist in the CPS Network to manage resource usages of all CPS entities. The simulation platform is highly configurable and configuration of the simulation environment, CPS entities and two-phase commit algorithm are supported. Moreover, various statistical information and operation logs are provided to monitor and evaluate the platform itself and the transaction model. Seven groups of simulation experiments are carried out to verify the simulation platform and the transaction model. Simulation results show that the platform is capable of simulating a large load of CPS entities and transactions, and entities and components perform their functions correctly with respect to the processing of transactions. The two-phase commit algorithm is evaluated, and the results show that, compared with traditional cases where no conflict resolving is applied or a conflicting transaction is directly aborted, the proposed conflict resolving strategies improve the schedule productivity by allowing more transactions to be executed and the scheduling throughput by maintaining a higher concurrency level.

Baigiamajame magistro darbe buvo lyginama ofsetinės ir fleksografinės spaudos kokybė spausdinant spalvines kontrolines skales, spalvų sutapdinimo kryžius, skiriamosios gebos elementus. Atspaudai buvo atspausdinti ofsetine lapine spaudos mašina ir siauraritinine fleksografinės spaudos mašina su centriniu spaudos cilindru. Mikroskopu buvo matuojamas spalvų sutapdinimo tikslumas, skiriamosios gebos elementų dydis. Densitometru buvo matuojamas atskirų ir binarinių spalvų rastrinių taškų santykinis plotas bei įvertintas gradacinis tikslumas. Pagal gautus kiekybinius rezultatus nustatyta, jog fleksografinės spaudos kokybė prastesnė negu ofsetinės spaudos. Darbą sudaro šios dalys: įvadas, literatūros apžvalga, kokybės reikalavimai, problemos analizė, eksperimento eiga ir rezultatų analizė, išvados, literatūros sąrašas. Darbo apimtis – 80 p. teksto be priedų, 65 pav., 43 lentelės, 18 literatūros šaltinių. / In master thesis was compared the offset and flexographic printing quality. Printing quality was evaluated using control strips, register crosses, resolving power test elements. Jobs were printed with offset sheet-fed printing press and flexographic narrow web press with central impresion cilinder. Register accuracy and resolving power were investigated using microscope. Dot area of single and binary colors wes measured with densitometer and halftone graduation characteristics were evaluated. On the basis of quantitative results it was determined that offset printing quality in comparison with flexography is higher. Master thesis comprise of folowing chapters: literature review, quality requirements, experimental, results and discusion, conclusions, references. Amount – 80 pages, 65 figures, 43 tables, 18 references.

Towards predictive eddy resolving simulations for gas turbine compressors

This thesis aims to explore the potential for using large eddy simulation (LES) as a predictive tool for gas-turbine compressor flows. Compressors present a significant challenge for the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) based CFD methods commonly used in industry. RANS models require extensive calibration to experimental data, and thus cannot be used predictively. This thesis explores how LES can offer a more predictive alternative, by exploring the sensitivity of LES to sources of uncertainty. Specifically, the importance of the numerical scheme, the Sub-Grid Scale (SGS) model, and the correct specification of inflow turbulence is examined. The sensitivity of LES to the numerical scheme is explored using the Taylor-Green vortex test case. The numerical smoothing, controlled by a user defined smoothing constant, is found to be important. To avoid tuning the numerical scheme, a locally adaptive smoothing (LAS) scheme is implemented. But, this is found to perform poorly in a forced isotropic turbulence test case, due to the intermittency of the dispersive error. A novel scheme, the LAS with windowing (LASW) scheme, is thus introduced. The LASW scheme is shown to be more suitable for predictive LES, as it does not require tuning to a known solution. The LASW scheme is used to perform LES on a compressor cascade, and results are found to be in close agreement with direct numerical simulations. Complex transition mechanisms, combining characteristics of both natural and bypass modes, are observed on the pressure surface. These mechanisms are found to be sensitive to numerical smoothing, emphasising the importance of the LASW scheme, which returns only the minimum smoothing required to prevent dispersion. On the suction surface, separation induced transition occurs. The flow here is seen to be relatively insensitive to numerical smoothing and the choice of SGS model, as long as the Smagorinsky-Lilly SGS model is not used. These findings are encouraging, as they show that, with the LASW scheme and a suitable SGS model, LES can be used predictively in compressor flows. In order to be predictive, the accurate specification of inflow conditions was shown to be just as important as the numerics. RANS models are shown to over-predict the extent of the three dimensional separation in the endwall - suction surface corner. LES is used to examine the challenges for RANS in this region. The LES shows that it is important to accurately capture the suction surface transition location, with early transition leading to a larger endwall separation. Large scale aperiodic unsteadiness is also observed in the endwall region. Additionally, turbulent anisotropy in the endwall - suction surface corner is found to be important. Adding a non-linear term to the RANS model leads to turbulent stresses that are in better agreement with the LES. This results in a stronger corner vortex which is thought to delay the corner separation. The addition of a corner fillet reduces the importance of anisotropy, thereby reducing the uncertainty in the RANS prediction.

Hybrid quantum information processing with continuous and discrete variables of light fields

Quantum correlations play a fundamental role in quantum information science. The variety of their manifestations has become increasingly apparent following the development of novel light sources, protocols and photodetectors. One broad classification identifies two instances of non-classical correlations: particle and mode entanglement. These categories mirror two coexisting descriptions of quantum systems in terms of discrete and continuous variables of the electromagnetic field. The past decades have generated a number of promising results based on schemes which encompass elements from both frameworks, rather than viewing the two descriptions as mutually exclusive. In this context, it is possible to conceive and realise experiments where either the quantum resource or the detection system is 'hybrid'. Optical weak-field homodyne detectors bring together phase sensitivity and photon counting; as such, they represent a detection scheme which works across continuous and discrete variables of the radiation field. In this thesis we present a two-mode weak-field homodyne detection layout with added photon-number resolution and apply it to the study of a split single-photon state and a squeezed vacuum state. As a first test of the capabilities of this system, we investigate the reconstruction of relevant features of a given quantum resource - such as its photon statistics - with our detection scheme. Further, we experimentally demonstrate the observation of an instance of non-classical optical coherence which combines the continuous- and discrete-variable descriptions explicitly. The ability to probe phenomena at the interface of wave and particle regimes opens the way to novel, improved schemes for quantum information processing. From a more fundamental perspective, such hybrid approaches may shed light on the very roots of quantum enhancement.

Safe Robotic Manipulation to Extract Objects from Piles : From 3D Perception to Object Selection

This thesis is concerned with the task of autonomous selection of objects to remove (unload) them from a pile in robotic manipulation systems. Applications such as the automation of logistics processes and service robots require an ability to autonomously manipulate objects in the environment. A collapse of a pile of objects due to an inappropriate choice of the object to be removed from the pile cannot be afforded for an autonomous robotic manipulation system. This dissertation presents an indepth analysis of the problem and proposes methods and algorithms to empower robotic manipulation systems to select a safe object from a pile elaborately and autonomously. The contributions presented in this thesis are three-fold. First, a set of algorithms is proposed for extracting a minimal set of high level symbolic relations, namely, gravitational act and support relations, of physical interactions between objects composing a pile. The symbolic relations, extracted by a geometrical reasoning method and a static equilibrium analysis can be readily used by AI paradigms to analyze the stability of a pile and reason about the safest set of objects to be removed. Considering the problem of undetected objects and the uncertainty in the estimated poses as they exist in realistic perception systems, a probabilistic approach is proposed to extract the support relations and to make a probabilistic decision about the set of safest objects using notions from machine learning and decision theory. Second, an efficient search based algorithm is proposed in an internal representation to automatically resolve the inter-penetrations between the shapes of objects due to errors in the poses estimated by an existing object detection module. Refining the poses by resolving the inter-penetrations results in a geometrically consistent model of the environment, and was found to reduce the overall pose error of the objects. This dissertation presents the concept of minimum translation search for object pose refinement and discusses a discrete search paradigm based on the concept of depth of penetration between two polyhedrons. Third, an application centric evaluation of ranging sensors for selecting a set of appropriate sensors for the task of object detection in the design process of a real-world robotics manipulation system is presented. The performance of the proposed algorithms are tested on data sets generated in simulation and from real-world scenarios.

A summary of several significant classical ethical theories followed, providing several tools with which to evaluate decisions that have ethical implications. Finally, the conclusion was made that the best framework for making ethical decisions is found in the application of the virtues espoused by the gospel of Jesus Christ.

General game playing is an area of artificial intelligence which focuses on creating agents capable of playing many games from some class. The agents receive the rules just before the match and therefore cannot be specialized for each game. Deepstack is the first artificial intelligence to beat professional human players in heads-up no-limit Texas hold'em poker. While it is specialized for poker, at its core is a general algorithm for playing two-player zero-sum games with imperfect information - continual resolving. In this thesis we introduce a general version of continual resolving and compare its performance against Online Outcome Sampling Monte Carlo Counterfactual Regret Minimization in several games.

DIFFUSION CONSTRICTION OF IONS USING VARYING FIELDS FOR ENHANCED SEPARATION, TRANSMISSION AND SIZE RANGE IN ION MOBILITY SYSTEMS

<p>    Drift tubes (DT) are prominent tools used in Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS) to separate ions in the gas phase due to their difference in mobility. While prominently used for small ions (< 10nm), their use for larger particles (up to 100nm) is limited and can only be attempted at atmospheric pressure due to diffusion. A system that specializes in high sensitivity larger particles (up to 1000nm) is the Differential Mobility Analyzer (DMA), but lacks in resolution (< 10 for particles 30-1000nm). The idea behind this work is to be able to design a new IMS system based on similar<br> principles to the DT but that allows high resolution and sensitivity for a large range of sizes if possible. The primary idea revolves around the principle of non-constant linear fields to try and control the width of the ion packet as it travels through the system. The first attempt was an Inverted Drift Tube (IDT) which lacked sufficient<br> sensitivity. This was followed by the development of the Varying Field Drift Tube (VFDT) which was the first of such systems to perform better than a regular DT, but only marginally. Finally, the last version of the system included a secondary pulse and labeled High Voltage Pulse - Varying Field Drift Tube (HVP-VFDT), which solved<br> some of the issues of the VFDT and was able to achieve resolving powers of 250, 3-5 times higher than regular DT.</p> <p><br>    In the IDT system, a gas flow is used to drive the packet of ions through the drift region while a linearly increasing electric field which is in the opposite direction of the flow is used to slow down the ions and separate them. In this regime it is the largest ions that arrive at the detector first, hence the name Inverted Drift Tube.This technique would allow larger ions and particles to be detected. At the same time, the linear field can be shown to have diffusion constriction (auto-correction) properties, where the broad distributions may be narrowed in the axial direction. However, the gas flow is difficult to control well and the parabolic velocity profile of the gas flow in the tube is a unfavorable factor for the system. </p> <p><br></p> <p>    To avoid the issue of the parabolic velocity but still take into account the VFDT takes the advantage of the diffusion auto-correction, the gas flow is suppressed and a linearly decreasing field is used to drive the ions. By solving the Nernst-Planck equation, we show that the VFDT has a spatial resolving power that is much higher than that of the regular DT. A DT was built and tested using a mixture of tetraalkylammonium salts. The transformation from the raw variable arrival time distribution to collision cross section or mobility diameter is derived and the linear relationship<br> makes it simple for calibration and transformation. A resolving power of over 90 is achieved experimentally although higher resolving powers were expected theory. <br>  <br>  It turns out that the difference between theory and experiments had to do with the fact that in the VFDT, the spatial and time resolving powers are different.This<br> is due to the low drift velocity at the end of the drift tube. To increase this velocity, a high voltage pulse is applied at a certain time depending on the ion/s of interest with a new system, HVP-VFDT. The system was tested numerically and experimentally where several parameters where tested resulting in a higher resolving powers when compared with DT and VFDT systems.The simulation results showed that the transmission efficiency and resolving power can be controlled by raising or lowering the field. Overall, the experimental setup tested reached resolving powers of 250 with moderate gate pulses. The HVP-VFDT system also shows that the distribution may be narrowed over the initial one, something impossible with a real drift tube and<br> opens a myriad of possibilities, including resolving powers of several thousands under low pressure and RF fields. <br>    <br>  The next step will be to couple the system to a Mass Spectrometer which is expected to be completed in the near future. To understand how a DT works with   RF fields and low pressure, a collaboration was done with David Clemmer’s lab and his 4 meter drift tube that can achieve resolutions of 150 in Helium at 4torr. Here, we tested a set of polymers and compared the results to those acquired in Nitrogen with a DMA. The shape and structure of the polymers in the gas phase was studied showing<br> self-similar assemblies that corresponds to a globule with an appendix sticking out. <br>  <br>    </p>

Réinscrivant le processus d’intégration européenne dans une Histoire de la Guerre froide et post-Guerre froide et plus généralement dans une histoire européenne plus longue que le seul XXe siècle, cette thèse explore l’histoire des relations de la Commission européenne avec la périphérie sud-orientale du continent. La longue période chronologique étudiée permets de mettre en exergue les « forces profondes » qui se tiennent derrières les actions de l’exécutif de la CEE/UE dans une région critique pour l’Europe. Pour se faire, nous nous sommes basés sur les archives de la Commission européenne, du Conseil, du Département d’État américain, des Ministères des affaires étrangères français et britannique, de la bibliothèque de Cluj-Napoca en Roumanie et d’entretiens.Divisée en quatre parties, chacune se centrant sur une période chronologique, ce travail analyse l’action de la Commission face aux changements qui ont bouleversé l’Europe du Sud-est entre 1960 et 2010. L’adaptation constante de la politique de la Commission, de la « doctrine de l’Association » à la Synergie de la Mer Noire, nous ont amené à développer l’idée d’une Süd-ost politik qui se met en place dès le début des années 1960. Cependant, contrairement à l’Ostpolitik de Bonn, il ne s’agit pas pour Bruxelles d’aller vers les États communistes du Sud-est européen ou l’Union soviétique, mais plutôt de lutter contre leur influence. La Süd-Ost politik communautaire est clairement anticommuniste et antirusse.La Communauté fait barrage à Moscou en étendant le modèle de la démocratie libérale capitaliste dans la zone autour des Détroits. La situation stratégique d’Athènes, d’Ankara et plus tard de Tbilissi ou Kiev n’est pas oubliée par Bruxelles. Ainsi, la Commission s’inscrit dans une plus longue histoire, son action fait écho à la lutte entre Paris, Londres et Saint-Pétersbourg pour le contrôle des Détroits, aux tentatives des États de la région de copier les modèles nationaux d’Europe de l’Ouest et à la politique orientale des Puissances occidentales après 1918.Cependant, la Commission doit ménager des État membres qui lui rappellent sans cesse que ces actions doivent rester limitées aux traités. L’Avis sur la Grèce en 1976 marque le point culminant de ce débat entre Conseil et Commission. Parallèlement, au cours des années 1970, Bruxelles veille à ne pas laisser émerger dans sa périphérie des organisations qui pourraient la concurrencer. Il en sera ainsi de la Conférence pour la coopération et la sécurité en Europe et de son volet méditerranéen mais aussi de la Coopération Balkanique.Si la chute de l’Union soviétique fait naitre des hésitations sur la conduite à suivre vis-à-vis de l’Europe du Sud-est et sa nouvelle extension vers le Caucase et dans les anciennes républiques soviétiques. Bien vite la Commission revient à sa politique d’extension du modèle européen. Cependant, le centre des préoccupations communautaire n’est plus la Grèce ou la Turquie. Avec l’effondrement de l’Empire soviétique, le champ d’action de la Communauté -devenue Union- s’est élargi à l’ensemble de la Région Mer Noire.Pourtant, la non résolution du problème de Chypre, l’instabilité financière de la Grèce, les crises politiques turques, le maintien hors de Schengen de la Roumanie et de la Bulgarie sont des exemples des difficultés rencontrées par la Communauté dans la région.La guerre en Géorgie et l’annexion de la Crimée par la Russie à la suite de la révolution à Kiev illustrent que le processus « doux » d’inoculation des valeurs du Traité de Rome ne va pas de soi du moment que celui-ci rencontre une opposition « dure ». Nous achevons notre réflexion en nous posant la question de la capacité de l’Union et de la Commission à absorber à terme l’ensemble de la Mer Noire ce qui mettrait la Mésopotamie et l’Asie centrale en contact direct avec le processus d’intégration européenne.Il s’agit maintenant de savoir si la Mer Noire deviendra un " lac Européen". / Fitting the European integration process into the history of the Cold War and post-Cold War and more generally in European history longer than the “short” twentieth century, this thesis explores the history of relations between the European Commission and the South-Eastern outskirts of the continent. The long period studied allows to highlight the "deep forces" that stand behind the actions of the executive of the EEC / EU in such a critical region for Europe. To do so, we relied on the archives of the European Commission, the Council, the U.S. State Department, the British and French Ministries of Foreign Affairs, the library of Cluj-Napoca University in Romania and interviews.Divided into four parts, each focusing on a period of time, this work analyses the actions of the Commission to address the changes that have transformed the region between 1960 and 2010. The continuous adaptation of the policy of the Commission, from the "doctrine of Association” to the Black Sea Synergy, led us to develop the idea of a Süd-ost politik that was already designed in the early 1960s. However, unlike the Ostpolitik of Bonn, Brussels did not go toward the communist states of South-Eastern Europe or the Soviet Union, but rather prevent their influence. The Community’ Süd-Ost politik was clearly anti-communist and anti-Russian.This is the main continuity: the European Community had to block Moscow by extending the model of capitalist liberal democracy in the area around the Straits. The particular strategic situation of Athens, Ankara and later Tbilisi or Kiev is never forgotten by Brussels. In this, the Commission is part of a longer history, its action echoes the struggle between Paris, London and St. Petersburg for the control of the Turkish Straits, attempts by states in the region to copy Western European domestic models and the Eastern policy of the Western powers after the First World War.However, the Commission had to deal with the Member States that constantly reminded Brussels that its actions should remain within the framework of the Treaties. The Opinion on Greece in 1976 marks the culmination of the debate between the Council and Commission. Meanwhile, during the 1970s, the EEC executive carefully took care to stop the emergence of organizations in its periphery that could compete with the Community. This will be the Conference for Security and Cooperation in Europe and its Mediterranean component but also the Balkan Cooperation.In 1991, when the Soviet Union collapsed, the Commission was uncertain of what to do with South Eastern Europe and its new extension to the Caucasus and the former Soviet republics. The Commission quickly returned to its systematic policy of extending the European model. However, the centre of community concerns was not Greece or Turkey. With the collapse of the Soviet Empire, the scope of the Community –became Union- expanded to the entire Black Sea region.However, the failure to resolve the Cyprus problem, the financial instability of Greece that threatens the entire euro zone, political crises in Turkey, the decision to keep out of Schengen space Romania and Bulgaria are examples of the difficulties faced by the Community in the region.The war in Georgia and the annexation of Crimea by Russia following the revolution in Kiev illustrate that the “soft” inoculation process of the values of the Rome Treaty does not come by itself as long as it meets a “hard” opposition.We conclude our discussion by asking the question of the capacity of the Union and its Commission to absorb eventually the whole Black Sea basin, which would put Mesopotamia and Central Asia in direct contact with the European integration process.The question is now whether the Black Sea will eventually become a “European lake
