Foram avaliadas as imagens digitalizadas das radiografias periapicais de 20 implantes, sendo 10 com superfícies SLA® e 10 com superfícies SLActive® (Instituto Straumann®, Basel, Suíça). Coroas metalocerâmicas foram instaladas doze semanas após a colocação dos implantes no primeiro grupo (SLA) e seis semanas no segundo (SLActive). Radiografias periapicais foram realizadas imediatamente após a colocação das coroas (T0), e aos 3 (T1), 6 (T2) e 12 (T3) meses. Após a digitalização das radiografias, foi medido o Nível Médio de Reabsorção Óssea (NMRO) nos quatro períodos experimentais. Os resultados foram submetidos ao teste ANOVA e Dunnett revelando que o NMRO no grupo SLA variou entre 0,08mm±0,64 (T0) a 0,44mm±0,66 (T3). No grupo SLActive foi de -0,05mm±0,60 (T0) a -0,05mm± 0,41 (T3). A alteração do NMRO não teve valor significativo dentro de cada grupo, porém quando os resultados entre os grupos foram comparados, houve diferença estatística: 0,20mm±0,70 (SLA) e -0,04mm±0,44 (SLActive), (p<0,05). De acordo com metodologia empregada, NMRO no grupo SLActive não reduziu em função da carga mastigatória durante doze meses de avaliação / Abstract: The aim of this study was to compare the level of bone resorption on implants with physically and chemically treated surfaces, placed in grafted maxillae, and loaded with single crowns. The periapical radiographs of twenty implants, 10 with SLA® and 10 with SLActive® surface (Institut Straumann®, Basel, Switzerland), were digitalized and analyzed. The metaloceramic crowns were installed twelve weeks after placing the SLA implants and 6 weeks after SLActive implants. The periapical radiographs were done immediately after crown installing (T0), 3 (T1), 6 (T2) and 12 (T3) months, afterward. The digitalized images were used to analyze the Medium Level of Bone Resorption (MLBR) in four experimental periods (T0, T1, T2, T3). Using ANOVA and Dunnett tests, the results showed that MLBR varied between 0,08 mm ± 0,64 (T0) to 0,44 mm ± 0,66 (T3) in SLA group. Nevertheless, in SLActive group MLBR measured -0,05 mm ± 0,60 (T0) to -0,05 mm ± 0,41 (T3). The MLBR wasn't significant, however, comparing two groups the difference was significant: 0,20 mm ± 0,70 (SLA) and -0,04 mm ± 0,44 (SLActive) (p<0,05). Nutrient allocation and conservation mechanisms in trees: intraspecific variation, reproductive costs, and global scale comparisons

Nitrogen and phosphorus have individually or jointly been demonstrated to limit primary productivity in most of Earth’s forested systems. Nutrient limitation of forest primary productivity is important because terrestrial systems currently store large amounts of carbon and partially mitigate carbon dioxide emissions from anthropogenic activities. There is also evidence that nutrient availability relative to demand is decreasing in forested systems. Trees have complex responses to nutrient availability, including changes in allocation of nutrients to different organs and mechanisms that aide in recycling of nutrients within the plant and ecosystem. In this work I provide new insight related to nutrient allocation and conservation mechanisms in trees, demonstrating that these mechanisms affect nutrient limitation of primary productivity. In Chapter 2, I provide evidence that tree reproductive organs have nutrient resorption processes that transfer nutrients from fruit to seeds and I also demonstrate that tree fruit are capable of photosynthesis – in the absence of such processes the carbon and nutrient costs of tree reproduction would likely be higher. In Chapter 3, I report on the results of a community science project through which I identified variation in biogeochemically relevant leaf traits across much of the geographic distribution of Acer rubrum, one of North America’s most broadly distributed tree species, demonstrating that foliar nitrogen resorption is highest in colder high latitudes and leaf litter %N is highest at warmer low latitudes. In Chapter 4, I compare leaf and reproductive litterfall nitrogen and phosphorus metrics worldwide and demonstrate that reproductive litterfall is a significant contributor to tree nutrient budgets, comprising a median of 13.0% and 16.1% of nitrogen and phosphorus fluxes, respectively, when combining leaf and reproductive litterfall. Overall, the results of my dissertation enable me to identify several understudied aspects of tree nutrient allocation and conservation processes by considering the biogeochemistry of reproductive and foliar organs and associated variation across the natural distribution of trees.

A Histologic and Cephalometric Investigation of Premolar Intrusion in the Macaque Speciosa Monkey

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / It has been debated as to whether teeth may actually be intruded in their alveoli. This study was designed to measure the intrusive movement and histologic response of specific teeth to a known intrusive force. Four Macaque speciosa monkeys were used. The animals corresponded in age to a 12-14 year old human being. Intrusive forces of either 10, 50, 100, or 300 grams were placed on the maxillary first premolars; each force value was held constant during the duration of the experiment, which was 60 days. Maxillary first molars were used as anchorage. Cephalometric headplates proved that all force values were capable of giving intrusion. The 50 gram forces, however, gave the most efficient intrusion. Histologic sections were made on all experimental teeth. 300 and 100 gram forces gave excessive root resorption but the 50 and 10 gram force values elicited only slight root resorption. Root resorption seemed to be directly related to excessive force. The amount of intrusion was not related to a loss of root structure. Bone resorption appeared to allow the intrusion of teeth with minimal tissue damage if proper force values were used.
