Locus of Control and Adjustment to Retirement

Locus of desired control and participation in a retirement preparation program was investigated in relation to retirement attitudes and adjustment. Fifty-nine subjects, consisting of older workers and retirees from a large southwestern corporation, comprised the sample. An experimental group, consisting of 12 subjects, completed questionnaires prior to and following their participation in the retirement preparation program. A control group, consisting of 15 subjects, completed the same questionnaires at approximately the same times as did the experimental group, but did not receive retirement preparation. A third group, consisting of 20 retirees who had a previous retirement preparation experience and 12 retirees who had not had such a retirement preparation experience, completed similar questionnaires.

Specifically, the study measured the degree to which participants in a pre-retirement education workshop experienced changes in their attitudes toward, knowledge about, and preparation behavior for retirement as a result of the treatment provided.

The impact of retirement planning and education on retiree's UFE satisfaction

Employees who plan for retirement can contribute meaningfully towards building a sustained quality of life during retirement. The lack of pre-retirement planning and education, however, “weakens” an individual’s life satisfaction. The aim of this study was to explore and describe the impact retirement planning and education has on retiree’s UFE satisfaction and to determine overall individual quality of life. This research firstly discusses retirement, or the prospect of giving up work. The research study points to the fact that an overwhelming amount of research shows that retirement, as a social phenomenon cannot be understood except in the context of work, because the meaning of retirement is largely an outgrowth of the meaning of work. The study further suggests that the transition from work to retirement can be eased through planning. Beginning to plan for retirement several years before retirement is anticipated is helpful. The study points to quality of life as a multi-dimensional concept that refers to an individual’s overall life satisfaction and total well-being. The findings discussed in Chapter Five indicate a reasonable level of retirement planning and education amongst retiree’s who participated in the survey. Recommendations from the study indicated a need for individual counseling during retirement planning and education workshops.

Sua justificativa reside no fato de que as pessoas, de modo geral, não estão preparadas para a aposentadoria, levantando dúvidas e demonstrando sofrimento quando esse momento decisivo em suas vidas vai se aproximando. Nesse cenário, a aposentadoria tem sido percebida como uma das perdas mais significativas na vida humana, com impactos nos campos social, ocupacional, financeiro e psicológico. A pesquisa foi realizada com 11 servidores técnico-administrativos em educação pertencentes ao Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Espírito Santo (Ifes), Campus Vitória, sendo 7 mulheres e 4 homens, com idades compreendidas entre 51 e 68 anos. A abordagem utilizada na pesquisa foi qualitativa, com dados coletados por meio de entrevista semiestruturada, cujas transcrições passaram pela análise de conteúdo de Bardin (2011). Ao final, percebeu-se a necessidade de implantar medidas no Campus, direcionadas aos servidores em fase de pré-aposentadoria. Como produto técnico resultante desta dissertação, é apresentada proposta de implantação de um Programa de Preparação para Aposentadoria (PPA) como Política Institucional no Ifes para preparar o servidor que pretende encerrar suas atividades na instituição, a fim de viabilizar a elaboração de projetos de vida após a ruptura de seu vínculo de trabalho. This study expands the small, existing body of literature focusing on this topic by presenting eighteen hypotheses, grouped into five categories of factors, and testing them with the National Longitudinal Surveys of Labor Market Experience.

Virginia Farmer Retirement and Transition Planning

This study focuses on determining how Virginia farmers are planning for farm retirement and succession and whether they will be financially prepared for their retirement years. The Virginia farming population is aging, life expectancy is increasing, and Social Security benefits are not a stable source of retirement income presenting challenges for Virginia farmers who are planning to either retire from the family farm or transition it to the next generation. In this study a 59-item survey was sent to 2000 randomly selected Farm Credit agricultural customers. Results from the survey were analyzed using chi-square tests and correlations to determine statistically significant relationships between the variables. The analysis indicates that Virginia farmers planning to retire from the farm face high levels of debt and plan to sell the farm operation. Virginia farmers planning to transition the farm are generating higher profits from the farm operation and their successor has been identified. The majority of Virginia farmers are financially prepared for retirement with Social Security support; however, without supplemental income from Social Security the majority of the Virginia farming population is not financially prepared for retirement. The results indicate necessary action from the private, academic, and public sectors. Financial professionals should offer retirement planning seminars, academia should continue to research the issues, and the government should consider developing a savings plans specifically for the agricultural community that offer tax advantages. / Master of Science

Women and pensions

Legislative changes in the 1980s and 1990s have meant that non-state pensions are becoming increasingly important in pension provision in Britain. The introduction of Approved Personal Pension Plans (APPS) as a legal second-tier pension option has meant that potential pension alternatives have increased and now consist of SERPS, occupational pension schemes and APPS. These alternatives are not, however, similarly beneficial. Occupational pensions are usually by far the better option. It is precisely because women have been disadvantaged in occupational pensions in the past that so many older women live in poverty today. Using secondary analysis of the General Household Survey for 1988-90 the research shows that women of employable age are less likely to have occupational pensions or personal pension plans than men and this is largely because of the impact of childcare responsibilities on their labour market positions. However, the generally disadvantaged position of women in the labour market means even women without caring responsibilities are disadvantaged in pension welfare. In addition the research demonstrates that differences among women in relation to labour market variables as well as ethnicity, marital status and child dependency status means that women cannot be treated as an homogeneously disadvantaged group, and consequently some women are more disadvantaged than others in their pension provision. Interviews with 45 women aged 40-59 reveal that, for the women interviewed, although most women wanted an independent pension income, many could not afford, or were ineligible for, their desired schemes. The research also shows that married women cannot, even if they wanted to, rely on husbands for financial welfare in pensionable years as a polarisation of couples between those where both have a pension and where neither has a pension means that women are less likely to have a pension if their husband does not have a non-state pension. The research concludes that women's poverty in older age will increase, as concentration on non-state pension provision means that women will be increasingly disadvantaged.

The retirement decisions of older people in the UK

The empirical research about the labour force participation of older people has received increasing attention since the 1990s in the UK as there are growing concerns about the ageing of the population and the level of finance needed to support the elderly. Therefore, this thesis analyses main determinants associated with the retirement decisions of both men and women using discrete choice models. Age, health, education attainments, unearned income and pension eligibility are the most important determinants influencing the likelihood of retirement. On the other hand, the effects of other factors, such as hourly earnings, marital status, education, housing tenure, and other individual and household characteristics differ from 1991 to 2013. The other underlying factor that the study examines is the influence of gender disparity on retirement decisions of older people using nonlinear decomposition methods and which factors cause gender gap in retirement decisions. The gender disparity influenced by demographic and financial factors has not been significantly reduced over time. Age, hourly earnings, non-labour income and pension eligibility increase the gender gap, whereas education, good health conditions and being a homeowner act to reduce the gender gap in the retirement process. Moreover, this thesis points out the importance of partial retirement in the British labour market, which has been less subject to research in the UK, and it is found as an important concept to promote longer working lives among older people. Age, education and crisis period were found to be important determinants of partial retirement, while poor health, household income levels, and marital status, were found to be insignificant.
