Bowman, Brucie Garrett, 1951- 28 August 2008 (has links)
In an effort to enhance art education, and to garner a better understanding of the artistic individual, arts-based research emphasizing cognitive case studies, or process examination have been conducted; several should be noted for their contributions to this study. First, are the cognitive case studies conducted by Franklin (1989), Gardner (1997), and Gruber and Wallace (2001); second, are studies emphasizing artistic processes conducted by Beittel (1973), and Getzels and Csikszentmihalyi (1976). It is the author's contention that cognition, intuition, and sensory experience, contribute to the successful production of a work of art. A documented history of artsbased research has been conducted inside the classroom, therefore this dissertation focuses on the integration of cognitive, intuitive, and sensory aspects of the creative process utilized by an artist working in a natural setting. It is appropriate to characterize this research as a longitudinal study of the creative process utilized by the accomplished artist Noel Robbins. The author deems Robbins as "accomplished" having earned the highest academic degree, the Master of Fine Arts, and recognition from the artistic community at large. It is challenging for an individual that has been professionally trained as an artist to remain objective while conducting research within her respective discipline. Therefore, the author utilized a phenomenological approach incorporating data triangulation, along with peer and member checking. Robbins's artistic process was analyzed using the Evolving Systems Approach (ESA) developed by Gruber and his associates (2001), whereby purpose, affect, and knowledge were examined. Insights were sought concerning changes within Robbins's artwork over a 15-year period. Self-directed art production (Ulbricht, 2005, Wilson, 2005), termed by Wilson "the third pedagogical site" (p. 1), offers an alternative to the prescribed media/techniqueoriented artwork emphasized in the schools. This is consistent with Robbins's artistic process that the author analyzed. This author posits that it is only through continued micro-aesthetic investigations of artistic processes that art educators will be able to fully embrace Dewey's (1934) belief that the connection between art and its relationship to society and nature is not only an intellectual (conscious) bond, but also an intuitive and sensory connection as well. / text

CURRENT PRACTICES IN NORDOFF-ROBBINS MUSIC THERAPY (NRMT): THE VIEWS OF CONTEMPORARY PRACTITIONERS IN 2011

Mahoney, John Francis January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to describe current practices in Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy (NRMT) practice as perceived by contemporary practitioners in 2011 compared with the original approach as developed by its founders. I did this by interviewing prominent NR music therapists in the field, and asking them how their way of practicing compared to hobelieved Nordoff and Robbins originally practiced the model. I then transcribed and analyzed their responses to the interview questions, looking for themes of commonality and difference in their responses. / Music Therapy

Messianisme, mysticisme et monothéisme : le RSI dans les œuvres de Tom Robbins / Messianism, Mysticism and Monotheism : RSI in Tom Robbins' works

Buckwalter, Elvis 05 May 2009 (has links)
In the context of an American society where the importance of religion takes on epic proportions, a Lacanian approach to analyzing Tom Robbins’ novels is particularly useful in the identification of his works’ major themes: messianism, mysticism and monotheism. Not only do these particular religious events play a central role in his fiction, but they also serve to put psychoanalytic tools to use, such tools as the Symbolic, the Imaginary and the Real developed by Jacques Lacan. How can RSI define the religious debate in the works of Tom Robbins? This multidisciplinary study addresses this problem by focusing on three main areas. First of all, American society’s infatuation with messianism has given rise to a literary phenomenon that I have termed « the messianic subject », characterized by its topological anchorage in the Symbolic order. Moreover, the prevalence of mystical approaches to spirituality in Robbins’ novels – expressed by a mystical relationship between a divine being on the one hand, and believers on the other – constitute a symbiotic relationship present in Lacan’s Imaginary order. Finally, the realm of the Lacanian Real highlights the impossibility of reconciliation between these two structural instances by exploring the theme of monotheism in the works of Tom Robbins. This dissertation aims not only to make a little-known American writer known to Francophone audiences, but also to better define the relationship between religion and psychoanalysis in the novels of Tom Robbins

Biofilmes anaeróbios: desenvolvimento e caracterização filogenética usando a hibridação in situ com sondas fluorescentes / Anaerobic biofilms: development and phylogenetic characterization using fluorescence in situ hybridization

Araujo, Juliana Calábria de 11 May 2001 (has links)
In this study the development of anaerobic biofilms using a laboratory system called modified robbins device (MRO) were investigated. We were especially interested in comparing the organization of anaerobic cells, particularly those that are very common in domestic sewage sludge, in a hydrophilic (glass) versus a hydrophobic (polypropylene) surface. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with domain and group speci fie probes that target intracell ular 16S rRNA and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) were used to investigate the microbial composition of both the inoculum and anaerobic biofilms. Two sets of experiments were carried, one with pure methanogenic organisms and the other with cells from a mesophilic anaerobic granular sludge. The pure methanogenic cultures, Methanobacterium formicicum (OSM 1535); Methanosaeta conci/ii (OSM 3671) and Methanosarcina barkeri (OSM 800) were used to seed the MRD to allow the development of biofilms over 9 days. The results showed that ali the three species were colonizing both surfaces after 2 and 7 days of experimental period. In the second experiment, the biofilm reactor was seeded with a microbial anaerobic consortium and biofilm forrnation was studied during 22 days. Biofilm and culture vessel samples showed nearly the same microbial composition, both were dominated by hydrogenotrophic methanogenic Archaea related to the Methanobacteriaceae as detected by the specific probe (MBI174). This group accounted for 44 to 90% of the OAPI-stained cells and morphologically resembled Methanobacterium and Methanobrevibacter. Cells detected with the Methanomicrobiales specific probe (MG 1200) accounted for 2 to 18.0% of the OAPI-stained cells in the culture vessel and 0.1 to 2.0% in the biofilm samples. These cells were morphologically similar to Methanospiriltum, also a hydrogenotrophic methanogen. No cells were detected by the Methanosarcinaceae specific probe (MSMX860). Cells which hybridized to the Bacteria specific probe (EUB338) accounted for the remaining 3 to 18% of the DAPI-stained cells. The results showed that the hydrogenotrophic methanogenic Archaea cells predominated in the inoculum and the biofilms that developed on both surfaces, glass and polypropylene. Our data suggest that the hydrophobicity of the support material did not influence the development and the microbial composition of anaerobic biofilms, considering specific conditions of the experiments.
