Trata-se de uma análise da literatura de inspiração religiosa-cristã sobre o movimento rock, identificando no seu discurso os preceitos éticos-religiosos que fundamentam uma estética condenatória da música rock. A revisão da literatura sobre o rock aponta dois grupos bem distintos quanto ao seu posicionamento estético-ideológico. De um lado, os estudiosos em geral, que aceitam o rock como um movimento capaz de representar a cultura jovem, uma música associada a uma manifestação social normal e no campo oposto estão os religiosos - pastores, conselheiros e professores - que consideram o rock como uma música perigosa e com influência destruidora sobre a juventude. Esta dupla conotação ligada ao rock gerou a idéia deste estudo, tendo em vista os seguintes objetivos: 1) Apresentar uma revisão crítica da bibliografia de inspiração religiosa-cristã sobre o rock; e 2) Tentar encontrar respostas aos questionamentos quanto aos efeitos negativos desta música através da análise da relação música rock/ouvinte. A dissertação compõe-se de três partes que correspondem aos três capítulos do trabalho. O primeiro, aborda o rock sob a visão da literatura religiosa, que é a que condena a prática dessa música, e considera o porquê dessa condenação. O segundo capítulo, por sua vez, analisa o tema na concepção da literatura não-religiosa com uma avaliação comparativa com os tópicos do capítulo anterior. Por fim, o terceiro capítulo, apresenta os resultados da pesquisa de campo, realizada no ROCK IN RIO II - Rio de Janeiro no período de 22 a 24 de janeiro de 1991 - onde se contextualiza, na prática musical do rock, opiniões, conceitos e fatos apresentados nos capítulos anteriores. Conclui-se que o discurso condenatório ao rock representa uma disputa de poder pela qual os religiosos querem assegurar a lealdade dos membros da comunidade cristã a seus princípios. Neste sentido, o rock representa uma ameaça porque a sua missão, segundo a sua literatura e filosofia, é não copiar o mundo em seu estilo de vida e preferência musical. No entanto, através do estudo da literatura não-religiosa e da pesquisa de campo observou-se que esta música é um reflexo da sociedade e cultura atual e que, a maioria dos problemas apontados pela crítica religiosa-cristã no rock, são resultado de fatores extra-musicais. / This thesis deals with an analysis of religious-christian literature concerning the rock movement which identifies religious ethical norms that condemn rock music. This literature points to two different groups regarding their ideological position. One group accepts rock as just a cultural movement associated with young people. The other, mainly religious and clergymen, consider rock music to be dangerous with a destructive influence on the youth. These two stands generated the basic idea of this research along with the following objectives: 1) To present a critical analysis of the bibliography related to the religious-christian viewpoint dealing with rock; 2) To discuss the negative critique to this music by means of an analysis of the relation rock music/listeners. The thesis is divided into three chapters: the first indicates very strong condemnation of this music by much of the religious literature and why so. The second one is a comparative of the topics presented in the first chapter by using non-religious literature. Finally, the third chapter shows the results of field work done at the "Rock in Rio II Festival" in Rio de Janeiro, 1991. Much of what was presented in the previous chapters is discussed vis a vis data gathered at that event. It can be concluded that the discussion dealing with the condemnation of rock represents a dispute of power by which those of a religious background desire to maintain the loyalty of the christian community to its principles. In this way, rock appears to be a threat to them because their mission, acording to their literature and philosophy, is not to copy the world in its life style and its musical preference. However, research dealing with non-religous literature revealed that this music is a reflection of the society and its current culture. Also, this literature leads to conclude that many of the problems pointed out by the religious critics concerning rock music are effected by non-musical factors.

O heavy metal é um dos gêneros mais antigos dentro do universo musical do rock and roll. No decorrer das últimas quatro décadas, o heavy metal transcendeu o âmbito estritamente musical, tornando-se uma manifestação cultural mundializada, em torno da qual se construiu uma cadeia midiática específica, que inclui, entre outros elementos, publicações especializadas. Um desses títulos segmentados é o objeto desta pesquisa, a revista mensal Rock Brigade, editada em São Paulo desde 1982. Este trabalho busca compreender como a representação do heavy metal produzida pela revista Rock Brigade pode levar à formação de uma identidade para este gênero musical e seus apreciadores. Para isso, são analisados os sentidos produzidos nos discursos de entrevistados, jornalistas e leitores presentes na publicação. Filiada à perspectiva construcionista do jornalismo, esta pesquisa utiliza os Estudos Culturais britânicos como referencial teórico para pensar as questões referentes à representação e a identidades. O suporte metodológico do trabalho é dado pela Análise de Discurso de tradição francesa. Nesta pesquisa, foram analisadas seis edições da revista Rock Brigade, com intervalo de quatro meses entre cada uma, cobrindo o período de junho de 2005 a março de 2007, totalizando 198 textos que resultaram em 309 seqüências discursivas. A análise revelou que os sentidos presentes em quatro formações discursivas – “a comunidade dos diferentes”, “os batalhadores”, “os reverentes à tradição” e “os seres das trevas” – constroem uma representação do heavy metal como um gênero musical absolutamente distinto dos demais. Essa delimitação torna o heavy metal um espaço simbólico singular com o qual os membros de sua comunidade de apreciadores podem se identificar. / Heavy metal is one of the oldest genres inside of the musical universe of the rock and roll. In elapsing of last the four decades, heavy metal exceeded the strictly musical scope, becoming a worldwide cultural manifestation, around which it was built a specific media chain, that includes, among other elements, specialized publications. One of those publications is the subject of this study, the monthly magazine Rock Brigade, published in São Paulo since 1982. This study searches to understand as the representation of heavy metal produced by the magazine Rock Brigade can take to the formation of an identity for this musical genre and its fans. For this, it is analyzed the meanings produced in the discourses of interviewees, journalists and readers that can be found in the publication. Joined to the constructionist perspective of the journalism, this study uses the British Cultural Studies as theoretic reference to think the questions about the representation and identities. The methodological support of the study is given by the Discourse Analysis of French tradition. In this research, six issues of Rock Brigade magazine were studied, with an intermission of four months between each one, covering a period of time started in June, 2005 and ended in March, 2007, totalizing 198 texts which resulted in 309 discursive sequences. The analysis disclosed that the meanings established in four discursive formations – “the community of the different ones”, “the fighting ones”, “the reverends to the tradition” and “the beings of the darkness” – establishes a representation of heavy metal as absolutely distinct from the others musical genres. This delimitation becomes heavy metal a singular symbolic space with which the members of its community of fans can be identified.

Full scale field trials, carried out during the construction of the Penmaenbach Tunnel in North Wales, have shown that two-speed resin bonded rock bolts are resilient to close proximity blasting. Fully grouted 6m long rock bolts, installed within 0.7m of the tunnel face, have shown no significant signs of distress or failure. Instantaneous loads of up to 40% of the characteristic strength of the bolt were observed together with average residual load losses of 5% of the working load, which compares favourably with the acceptable tolerance of 10% working load stipulated by current practice. Analysis has also shown that rock bolts with low prestress sustain greater vibrations and proportionately higher dynamic load changes during blasting. However, bolts with relatively high prestress loads sustain greater induced loads. Empirical relations have been established to describe rock bolt behaviour in terms of induced vibration and scaled distance. In particular, a predictive equation relating dynamic load changes in the experimental rock bolts to scaled distance, is presented. Calculations based on approximate bolting costs have indicated that cost savings of up to 38% of the total bolting cost could have been effected if the results of this work had been implemented at the design stage. Physical modelling work has confirmed that the distribution of loads in the fixed anchor of a resin bonded bolt are non-linear when both static and impulsive loads are applied to the bolt head. Corroboration of the field results has also been established with respect to the significant influence of initial prestress load on dynamic load change. Complementary finite element modelling work has successfully predicted fixed anchor load distributions under static and dynamic loading conditions. Attempts to establish a detailed relation between distance from blast, magnitude of charge and change in residual load, for low to medium capacity rock anchorages on the West Portal of the tunnel, were thwarted by the poor performance of instrumentation with respect to temperature sensitivity. However, a simplistic approach to analysis has enabled the establishment of a tentative predictive relationship.
